TheMogMiner recently posted images of the rabbit items. They appear to be sources of leather, meat, and a new potion: Jump Boost! Also looks like Sheep will be dropping meat too.
Also, Sheep haven't dropped food since Survival Test, when they dropped mushrooms. I hope it doesn't lead to a bunch of "1.8 ruined Minecraft" threads like the rose texture and name change did for 1.7.

I'd like to believe that, but I'm sure it's just a coincidence. Either way, I'm glad they are doing it.
I think they are looking at your suggestion because there were other things they could have chosen (e.g. slimeballs), and they chose the same one you suggested.

I'm starting to love TheMogMiner. First Coarse Dirt and Cracked Stone Bricks, then Bunnies, next Rabbit items and Potion and after all of them Food-Dropping sheeps !
All of these are making 1.8 one of my favorite updates-- i can't believe i hated this update before.
Hopefully Mutton isn't too powerful. If it's equivalent to steak and porkchops, pigs will be even more worthless than they already are. Same goes for Rabbits but I don't see them being better than pigs food-wise.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
If only they added beetroots and beetroot stew, minecraft would finally have more food diversity...
Minecraft already has quite a bit of food diversity. Well, if you can call it that; there are a lot of different food items, but they're all basically the same thing (except for both golden apples and carrots and to a lesser extent, rotten flesh and spider eyes) just with two values swapped around. Beetroots and beetroot stew wouldn't do much for food diversity but they don't really NEED to be included in PC anyway since PC users can just mod them in.

Rabbit gives 2.5 food bars, according to TheMogMiner. So Rabbits won't replace pigs at least. Not sure about mutton. Rabbit Stew though gives 5 bars, though it combines various food items and is less effective than eating its ingredients alone, seems to be for convenience.
I really wish the food system would get an overhaul or something. I really don't like how there's no reason to eat anything else once you get Steak or something. There should be reasons to eat other foods, like perhaps melons can be eaten faster but meat takes slower. I'm not sure.
Personally, I feel that the easiest way to give pigs at least some form of an advantage is to allow them to breed with any foodstuff (bread, wheat, carrot, potato, whatever) while requiring cows to breed with Potatoes instead of Wheat. At least in the beginning of the game, barring finding a village right away, pigs would have at least some relative advantage for one with not a lot of food to invest in livestock. But that's hardly a fix to pigs. Just a band-aid. Pure and simple, they need more drops.
Really, let's look at rabbits: Leather, meat, potion ingredient, stew ingredient... they outclass pigs in every conceivable fashion. Now even sheep have benefits for culling, since they'll drop food now. Cows and chickens have always been superior to pigs in every way, but now every other farmable mob is better.
Praise be to Spode.
You did it, GerbilCrab!
They're using your potion ideas!

All that's left is for Squids to drop calamari.
Praise be to Spode.
