I haven't kept up with the thread but, you have no place saying how ads occur.
Nobody's got a gun to my head forcing me to visit this forum. Nobody's stopping us from using ad blockers, either. Dunno where you got this idea from that I can't control my own browser.

I'm really sorry but... Flash ads that are roll-over activated?
*Ad Block engaged*
Ads on this forum should require a deliberate trigger from the user in order to activate or expand, and I don't consider cursor location as a deliberate trigger mechanism. Take that however you like.
Rolling over for 3 seconds or clicking is deliberate, how do you accidentally trigger these? I've not once done it.
I want to point out that a lot of websites have advertising and that a lot of sites have sponsors and theres nothing wrong with that especially when the owner of this forum is having to pocket out cash to run these foums. But I also have to ask if anyone has simply talked to Notch about the financial situation here. A lot of his success is not only his twitter updates but also this forum which on his site he claims are the "Official forums". Anyone that visits his site is going to see this and think that there's a huge community behind his game even though all of this investment is by volunteers.

Clicking, yes, rollover no. Rollovers are like putting a minefield in your webpage. They can be problematic with bad connections and they tend to behave oddly when scrolling the page. Different browsers handle page scrolling in different ways and the behavior varies if you use the keyboard or the mouse wheel to scroll the page. In IE for example, if you put your mouse over an element and then scroll the page with the keyboard, the onMouseOut event doesn't fire for that element until you do something else with the mouse. This means things like roll over adds can still fire even though the cursor is technically no longer on the add. :/
So yea, rollover adds? Bad idea.

Well thanks, but honestly the last thing I need is a lecture from some self-righteous stranger. I have donated to this forum, and would continue to donate to this forum to keep it the way it was, but unfortunately that's now out of the question.
My place isn't for you to decide. Cleared up? Good.
Also, when in my statement did I ever refer to Notch? I didn't. I'm well aware of the separation of this forum from Mojang.

It should be noted:
1. These forums are only here today because of you who donated and we greatly appreciate it, more so than you can imagine, you're the reason the community still have this place!
2. As soon as we solve the premium account issue and work out a plan we'll make anyone who donated premium, based on their prior faith in us and support, while I don't know how this will work it shouldn't be an issue. Worst case I'll pay for it myself, we're not letting the people who kept this place online feel worthless and/or unappreciated.

citricsquid, I want to make it clear that I have no intention of undermining your ability to earn ad revenue for this forum by using an ad blocking addon. I'm self-employed so I understand that business decisions are usually a compromise between the client and the balance sheets.
I'm perfectly fine with reasonable ads, but once an ad pops out at me because I happened to have my mouse positioned over it without realizing, the it becomes a bit more of a nuisance for me. Is there any way for Curse to adjust the types of ad content they deliver to the forum to make it a bit less intrusive?

Not really, no. These adverts have always been displayed here, it has nothing to do with curse as far as I know, they were just only at the bottom before so you never noticed, I'll see what can be done. I don't think it's possible though.
I was of the opinion that the host did have some control over what ads were shown, so that they could remove offensive or inappropriate adverts from the site. If this is not the case, well...

Good luck with that. Not sure what you could really do other than track down the specific offending adds and get them taken out of your feed and that's a retroactive solution. It would be nice if you could run the adds through some kind of scanner before sending them along, but the interweb isn't set up like that. All you have is the link to the feed, the client then makes a direct connection to the add provider, the actual add body never passes through your fingers. (Which is my main objection to add feeds in general, I trust you, I don't trust them.)
I should note that while it would be theoretically possible to suck in the add yourself and then send it out to the client, that would break a lot of the tracking used by adds which would mean the clicks would stop counting and the like. Since people tend to get paid based on clicks, this isn't really an option.

If I had the choice to donate I would but they're closed, I looked for a way to donate the week I bought minecraft. Of course the forum stated that donations are closed.
You're place is no better than mine, that's arrogant and immature to be saying. You're a business owner too? You seem to have the world experience that you would understand why you're not better.(on top of why they need to keep the ads up.)
My whole beef is that ad blocker works just fine. You should invest in installing it. Takes only a few min.
On point: I get what you're saying about the whole popping out ads. They ARE annoying but I'd rather that than lose the forums or curse's support in helping with the bandwidth issues.
I also apologize if I came across as rude. However, just because your name is yellow because you donated, doesn't mean you have some special place or that you're better than the average forum goer. As I made perfectly clear at the start of my post, I would donate too but I'm unfortunately unable to support now because they closed the donations. -- if there still is a way to donate that I'm not seeing, please point me to the thread/link.

confirmed, if we do integrate with curse.com accounts all donators will get free premium access and premium is ad free.
For everyone else it'll be about $2.45 / month if you pay yearly, and $4.95 / month if you pay month to month, that'll give you ad free and some extra fancy stuff.
We're not 100% sure if we're doing this yet, we'll see what all you members want, but if you guys approve that will be about the price.

We felt it wasn't appropriate to continue taking donations when our costs are now securely covered, if you'd like to support us (via curse) then you can subscribe to curse premium :smile.gif: http://curse.com/premium
Question: As the "Notch Official" minecraft.net website says that this forum is the - and I quote that website - "official forum (notch reads this)" does that mean that Notch approved this joiningt of Curse?
I am confused by the idea that you claim you are not affiliated with notch, but notch publicly claims you are. Thus the idea exists that Notch also sold out to Curse. Would you please care to explain this better?

It's complicated. We're official in that we are the forum Notch thinks you should use, but we're not official in that Notch has no power over us, although we'd do whatever he wanted :tongue.gif: We talked to Mojang and they're happy with the deal, so yeah, they know about it.
To give you a basic history of the forum: I found Minecraft in... May 2009 (through my brother) and joined in IRC, a few weeks later Notch enabled skins (paid accounts) and I noticed the forum then sucked (mojang.com/forum, for all his games) so offered to make a new one. I did, he signed up and liked it and made it "official". We've been the same since, ran by community members (Not Notch) but he has supported us as the "official" forum.

I'm not interested in making my visits to minecraftforum.net resulting in a bill (much less a regular one). A donation... I could do. But not to a forum that has so very little control over its members behavior. Neither I look at minecraftforum.net as some kind of worthy investment. I'm sorry for the bluntness. But this essentially means my money won't be going this way. I like you guys, but not that much :smile.gif:
Furthermore, if the only thing that premium accounts will influence is the display of ads, I'll be a happy camper. That has been my contribution to minecraftforum.net so far (allowing the display of, and occasionally clicking, those ads). But if certain content or community features start to be accessed only from a premium membership, I will leave these forums.

Furthermore, I note someone has brought up advertising. While, as a user of an adblock service, I have not seen online adverts for YEARS, I do find it mildly annoying that this contract has somehow resulted in extra advertising. I don't see why. Especially since we already have enough adverts for Curse right now.
Regarding some 'premium' thing. I already notice that a number of forum sponsors seem to be a bit high and mighty and not particularly nice people. As it is, I would be happy to pay to support the forum were it not for these people giving them a bad name. Adding extra, premium content will only heighten the elitism and cause ostracising of those new, young members, of which we already have many. If I ever have to pay to enter restricted parts of this forum which should not even be there, I will be leaving. While I can understand (maybe) on sites like Subeta which provide a free service, Minecraft is a game which you must pay to play. Even though it's only once-off, it still requires payment to get the full game and is much more convenient. I don't see why we should have to pay more to get the full forum experience too, especially if Notch himself has nothing to do with this forum. I just assumed that since this is the official forum, he would.
In regards to 'premium users' being able to block out ads, this is not a good thing. WE can block ads for free. We shouldn't need to have to pay to be able to do it, especially since these ads are so intrusive.
