Pop-up ads:
Well this sucks.
Pop-up ads? They're not pop-up ads and we will NEVER run pop-up ads. These are adverts that when you interact with them they present you with a video, don't interact with them and you won't see anything.

You just made my day :smile.gif:
To be honest I remember this being briefly discussed before on the Forum Discussion forum. But this just reconfirmed that. Which really is great. Woohoo, vBulletin here we come!

C'mon Notch, splurge a little and put an end to this Activision Notch nonsense.
Notch doesn't manage, administer, own or otherwise influences this forum decisions. minecraftforum.net is independent from Notch or his company, Mojang Specifications. You are barking at the wrong tree.
I was not barking but simply noting it would be nice if Notch set up his own, official forum so the community is no longer at the 'mercy' of the owners of the current one. Every game worth its salt has them, and, in my opinion, there would be additional benefits far more relevant than pop up ads, as the game has grown to the point where the current method of communication Notch employs, i.e. blog/twitter, no longer suffices.
The threads like 'The things Notch said' and tweets re: modding issues really make it look amateurish on his behalf.
I understand the transition he/his company is going through, the fact that different people, especially independent creators like Notch operate in differing ways, etc., but I feel a large number of people, myself included, see these forums as official, and would welcome a more direct involvement from Notch.

Notch stated before he does not want to manage or operate these forums. While of course that would be "best" it isn't an option.

Something they should probably stop doing. With only a few exceptions, I'd rather see them investing that money on the actual games they make, instead of hiring new personnel, and hosting or hiring servers for the sole purpose of maintaining a community. Particularly when that community is well capable of taking matters on their hands, as is clearly shown here.
Naturally, "we are at the mercy" of the hosts. But it's no different from being at the mercy of the game makers. Especially because it's exactly then that most problems arise. Company policies and all matters PR-related usually seriously undermine any influence the community can have on any forum decisions and their ability to freely express themselves (within reason). You would be amazed at the times you hear "this forum is operated by foo. If you don't like his game or the direction they are taking it, [insert here invitation to leave]". This, when you are even graced with an answer. And forget ever getting an answer that in a concrete and clear way addresses your concerns. Public relations is what they make of it, not you or I. Oh, and forget about suggesting an upgrade to the bulletin board software, enabling or disabling some of its features, or getting a new better one.
I understand the transition he/his company is going through, the fact that different people, especially independent creators like Notch operate in differing ways, etc., but I feel a large number of people, myself included, see these forums as official, and would welcome a more direct involvement from Notch.
These forums ARE official. They are the official forums for the game. Myself, I've only learned this recently too. But there's really nothing saying that his presence (or that of any of his associates or employees) is required.
As you correctly point, everyone may operate in different ways. And its really only time (and moves like this) that will determine if that was a good decision. I just wished you people put a little more faith on it. If there is one thing I'm positive is that no one in charge here wants to undermine these forums and aggravate the community. On the contrary, the idea is always to make it better.
We may disagree on what is better, but you know that it's too soon for that disagreement. After the move to Curse is concluded and some time has passed, then and only then can anyone honestly say if this was a good thing or not. So, let's give it a chance, shall we?

If Curse want me to load their adverts, they are going to have to do it with far less intrusive advertising. Until then, it stays well and truly blocked.
Unfortunately, not always they are in charge. I'm not sure of what type of agreements they sign in with the brands/advertising companies, but it's very common for the whole creative process to be on the hands of the brand, with the host (on this case Curse) simply being payed for the placement. This may not be true for the whole array of brands/advertisers Curse may be dealing with, but it's a fair bet it's the vast majority of them.
Being that these are also often the only form of revenue the placement company has (or the only one that matters), often companies like Curse are on the hands of the brands/advertisers and have little to not recommendation power on the type of ads.
I certainly cannot blame you on your decision to re-enable AdBlock. Especially on account of your slow and traffic limited connection. I find some of these ads disturbing too. I can just live with it because I don't have any connection limitations. But certainly if their frequency increases, I'm afraid I too will enable AdBlocker for these forums. It's unfortunate, but somehow these brands/advertisers need to understand they are undermining their own business by forcing others to place highly disruptive ads. Since I cannot expect my voice to be heard among them, I eventually am forced to place my weight on those hosting the ads, hoping they eventually turn their attention to other brands/advertisers less willing to aggravate their target audience.

An option we have is integrating with curse.com accounts, this means those with curse premium ($3 a month I think) don't see adverts on any curse sites. This has its advantages and disadvantages, but it's something we can consider if you guys want it to happen. We would of course work it so any previous donators would be eligible for either a free account or some sort of discount, that would have to be discussed though.
Anyway, I won't give anyone permission to block adverts as that's silly, but I wouldn't see anything morally reprehensible about blocking adverts if you're unable to browse with them on. I'm going to see what we can do with the forum soon anyway, we have a huge amount of work ahead and a lot to discuss within curse, myself aera and wedtm and also members.
I think the best thing about this deal is now the attention we can pay to worries like the adverts being too much, or posts going missing (god damnit that annoys me) whereas before we didn't have the time for it. I'll talk with the others about account integrations (with curse.com) to see about disabling adverts for some users, I'll pay for your premium Enjay :biggrin.gif:
Being that these are also often the only form of revenue the placement company has (or the only one that matters), often companies like Curse are on the hands of the brands/advertisers and have little to not recommendation power on the type of ads.
If I were Curse, my power would be "if you display them, I'll just switch to your competition." And considering there's always the text-centric option of Google AdSense, they can't claim that it's impossible to find somebody who won't throw Flash ads at the user.

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?
I don't see why people whine so much - once we're transferred to the Curse servers we won't be having so much downtime as we currently have, there will be a lot more Minecraft players who buy the game, more activity on the forums, more fun.
awesome! :biggrin.gif: when the first survival mode came out (when i bought the game) idk how many people knew about minecraft. But none of my friends had ever heard about it but now everyone i know loves minecraft!
Curse sounds pretty cool.
Make sure you have a script block when visiting any Curse site. Anyone that plays WoW can tell you about their history of banner ads running keyloggers and trojans.... gg.

This is simply malicious misinformation!
It's particularly damaging when the only company name that is mentioned is exactly the one that doesn't have anything to do with it. And let me make a very quick clarifying note here: I don't know Curse and I don't care about Curse. Until this thread, I didn't even know they existed. I feel no obligation to defend them.
But misinformation, is misinformation, is misinformation. And when I see it, I feel obliged to correct it. Especially when the outcome of what you are saying could have dire consequences to this forum; since you are essentially telling everyone to fear this forum ads and block them once the move to Curse is completed.
Ads running trojans and other malicious software are made by hackers posing as brands or marketing agents. They are not made by the companies, that like Curse, host them. They aren't even made by the companies that distribute them. Just so you have an idea, companies like Right Media congregate large numbers of ads that they acquire from brands and marketing agents and then distribute to other companies similar to other marketeers like Right Media, or directly to hosting companies like Curse. When an ad is found that is infected, it's not even Right Media own fault, much less that of an ad placement company like Curse. It's the ad makers'.
So if you have to name someone, name the makers of the Ads, if you know them. Not the company that placed them, that can't even control what type of ads they get from the script file they got from the marketeer.

Personally, I think the ad hosting business is far too trusting of the ad makers. The number of people who make ads is pretty large by now, and the process of creating ads is mostly automated these days - which makes it a prime target for crackers trying to distribute new malware before the AV vendors have a chance to update their databases.
It's also a way too opaque process. The current ads of the MC forums are managed by Adtech, and the information you can get from their website is pretty vague unless you fill out a form to request more info. I can't seem to find out how much control customers have over their ads. Personally, if I were to advertise on my own websites, I'd want to know how much control I'll have before considering an ad service. Generally speaking, the more opaque they are about their policies, the lower the chances I'd consider using them.

After reading everything I still believe going with Curse is a good option, and as for myself, I havent gotten any pop up ads, but as stated above, if you keep your mouse on certain ads for 3 seconds it does pop up, but as long as you dont tend to leave your mouse there you should be fine.
Also on the ad blocker subject, I think that there the premium accounts should be implemented as soon as possible, I wouldnt mind supporting the forums and getting no ads in return, and I think that it allows those with the ad blockers to contribute if they dont want to see ads. Compared to many sites, you can hardly call those two banner ads ads :tongue.gif:, some websites attack you with things popping out all over the place, and its not like it keeps you from reading the forum in any way.

I agree. I would still blame Curse because they consented to running the infected ads, and are allowing themselves to use systems that they have not vetted correctly as to protect their own reputation or the users who trust them.
If Curse is lazy and does not check these things, then by extension it means that they do not care enough to check them or validate the security of the systems they present ads to users with. Liability then falls on Curse, not the Ad network, because Curse was then negligent. Or at least that is what most web hosts have to deal with, and Curse in this case is the web host - as stated by many people, even mods on this forum - so as thats really a thing I know a LOT about I feel comfortable making these claims.
The potential security risk is the main reason I block adds on my windows machine*. I don't trust add feeds to properly screen all new adds for potential malware before distributing them. If you want me to see adds on a site, then make your own and sell your add space directly without using a third party feed. Either that or be prepared to guarantee that adds provided by the feed you use are 99.999% free of malware.
*I don't block any adds on my Linux box and I wouldn't block them on a mac provided I ever lost my wits and felt like throwing my money at Apple.

I'm really sorry but... Flash ads that are roll-over activated?
*Ad Block engaged*
Ads on this forum should require a deliberate trigger from the user in order to activate or expand, and I don't consider cursor location as a deliberate trigger mechanism. Take that however you like.

I haven't kept up with the thread but, you have no place saying how ads occur. This is not Notch's forum either, this is a "official" minecraft forum run independently from Notch. That's from him, not by him. Ads keeps things free. Remember that.

WE HAVE NOT MOVED TO CURSE SERVERS YET
All we have done so far is announced the move, added an additional ad at the top, and put the curse logo and site links at the bottom.
THIS IS IT.
