Side note to the admins who are in this topic: why does the forum constantly eat up my posts? I'll preview it a few times to get things right and submit it, to find myself back in the topic without my reply. I generally have to copy and paste my posts to stop myself from losing long ones.
This is a bug on TTWTG forums as well. What you need to do is: if you post and it goes back to the thread, your post hasn't gone through. So, just hit 'back' and then submit it again until you get the 'Information' screen which says 'your post has been submitted'. That is ultimate confirmation that it's gone through. If you don't get it then your post hasn't been posted. Hope this helps. But it is annoying having to hit 'back' eight times before it will post...

We (nor curse for that matter) have ANY intention of doing anything with the Curse client.
That's too bad, I was really hoping to get some order over the chaos that is the Modding section - any plans to revise that if Notch adds an API?
Using a third-party client to install mods (apart from our own dear ModLoader) can only end in tears. I wouldn't trust any software for use with Minecraft not made by a member of this forum.

Oh Great, I Play World of Warcraft and I've heard numerous times that the curse client (Which is said to easily install addons for you) for World of Warcraft Has been stealing accounts and hacking them, Hopefully this wont happen with Minecraft, it seems like one of those good/bad situations, Good because it helps the community, Bad because well, we will just have to see.

That's all well and good, but I was referring to the ability to track addons and receive notifications when there are updates to your favorite mod. If every modder here used GitHub or the likes - this wouldn't even be an issue.

The curse client, whose soul purpose is to copy the addon you downloaded to your addons folder for whatever game, is LESS invasive and SAFER than Risugami's ModLoader.
There is nothing stopping someone from writing a Mod that can be installed with ModLoader that is harmful in some way. Does Risugami check every mod that uses his loader? Is there ANYONE actively checking each and every mod uploaded here? No, and NO. When there is an outbreak here (and there will be), will you hold the forums responsible?
Curse does not remove the RESPONSIBILITY of the END USER to CHECK;
1)Who's the author of the Addon
2)Does s/he have good standing with the associated game community
3)Are there any complaints/bugs against the Addon that may have security impacts
4)Have you taken the proper precautions prior to installing the Addon.
Again - Curse Client is a glorified 'Copy/Paste' program - it has no more a chance to harm your computer then you do copying a file from one folder to another.

Considering how many thousands of users we have (85285) I'd imagine that finding out whether a mod has a virus in it would happen very quickly.
Despite how many noobs and trolls we have here, I am confident that there will never be anyone here malicious enough to implant a virus in a mod. We have a dedicated community.
Furthermore, Curse has had virii distributed through it before, as others have said.
How exactly is ModLoader more invasive and less safe? How is it invasive at all?
Riddle me that, Batman.

Well, whether it goes with Curse or not, I will always refuse to download third-party automatic updators, or pre-scanned mods. As for community issues... Sometimes one must fall to the bottom to rise to the top... (I swear, I have no idea where I heard that before, but I know that I did... Somewhere...) In this case, the site.
Considering how many thousands of users we have (85285) I'd imagine that finding out whether a mod has a virus in it would happen very quickly.
Well quickly in terms of a threat is not quick enough. Period. People WILL get infected many times over before EVERYONE is aware of the problem.

That is ignorance at its finest.

I don't know if you're trolling me or not - ANYONE is free to upload and download files through Curse. The fact that someone uploaded a virus, is no more interesting to me then the fact that people download viruses from links in Reddit.

You must be trolling - it MODIFIES files! Hence, Invasive. Curse modifies NO files - only copies them into and out of folders - you can download the mods manually and place them in their respective folders - ITS THE EXACT SAME THING
And because of people like you, that think 'Gee it uses ModLoader, so it must be safe', you grant mods an inaccurate level of security - making it inherently LESS safe.

Riddle solved.
On a side note - since so many ill informed users have so much to say - the Curse client could not even work with Minecrafts current mods - because, for the third time it was only ever designed to move files in and out of folders - if notch ever implements addons and wants to use curse - he'll have to design them to be files located OUTSIDE of the .jar.

It is. But the chance of us getting a virus from here is slim.

Exactly. But you would have to be a fool to put a virus in a mod and then promote it through its own thread: once word gets out that it is infected - which will happen quickly - it will be locked, the link removed, the person banned.

It is impossible to install mods at current without modifying game files. You should know this.
You're giving Curse too much credit.

You are granting Curse the same immunity.

Hence further reason we do not need Curse, since it is not compatible with Minecraft.

MeltingPoint, you've hit the nail on the head. Thanks for putting it into the words I couldn't.
So you're in support of Curse being used in future with Minecraft? What would be the point of this, especially since Notch is already implementing official mod compatibility?

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the curse client is simply a copy paste tool making mods easier to use in OTHER games.
Curse is NOT implementing their client to include support for minecraft.

Exactly. But you would have to be a criminal to put a virus in a mod and then promote it through its own thread: once word gets out that it is infected - which will happen quickly - it will be locked, the link removed, the person banned.
Fix'd and I don't think they care if they're banned - nor do I think it would be a big deal for them to spend some time in the community, if it meant they could make more money.
But it is this kind of thinking that does the most damage, and I hope none are foolish enough to rely on 'avatars' to guide you through computer security.
There is not a shred of difference between downloading mods here and downloading them from curse - except curse allows you to easily view, track, sort and maintain your addons while this forum does not. Both REQUIRE you to make your OWN decisions.

Hi everyone, i'm the founder and ceo of Curse.
I want to clarify a few things that catched my attention.
-Virus, etc in Addons
We approve every single file uploaded to Curse mannually. We scan them with more than 20 different AVs, and look for anything suspicious before approving something.
We have had 3 virus approved in 5 years, last being early 2008, if i remember correctly about 100 people downloaded the files before we took it down. We had 0 virus ever hitting the Curse client, it can not execute .exe
We have 2.3 millions active curse client users that logged the last 30 days, that's more users than minecraft itself. If we were spreading virus with the CC you would hear it everywhere, trust me.
-We 100% respect the terms of use of game developers. If Notch doesn't like addons, we will never support them. As simple as that!
-We have no affiliation with gold farmers. One of the big gold farming corporate that you all know that i won't name here offered me enough cash to retire my whole life,i told them to @#@$$ off.
If you guys want me to answer any questions, shoot.
