All I had to do was write a Unix Shell Script to "curl" (download) all the files, and zip them up in a archive. I run this once per MC update, and I don't need to do ANYTHING other than double-clicking my script.
As for sharing them... Notch should setup a archive, but the truth is that on TPB, there are many torrents of most MC versions. TBH, a official archive would fix most of these problems.

i have a question...what about the minecraft.jar file just incase someone failed to mod his game is that file at least allowed?
Why wouldn't you just "force update"?
And also, the past versions - What's the point of them? People are always complaining about the current update. And then, when the next one comes out, they hate the new one and love the one they were just complaining about.

I think there should be a way to put in your Minecraft.net account info and download earlier versions of the game, maybe on the site or in the launcher.

Late reply is late, but there's an alternative. MCNostalgia. Not many games actually have downloads for older versions of games.
So, if someone uploads an old .jar, KILL IT WITH FIRE

so why does Mojang not do this service for us? that way it is not illegal, but completely legitimate, you guys just push the community around, when in reality you are our gateway to the developers, we need you to convince Mojang to redistribute the older updates, what is so complicated about releasing dead code? EVERYONE HERE WANTS IT YOU GUYS.

greedy humanity is greedy, I am trying to get beyond this point, as it is moot to sell any of that information for money, pretty fantastically obvious IMHO.
SO I guess its once again, up to the pirates, thanks corporate greed for forcing us to walk a dark line.

the .jar is only part of the games files (proof is that there is a .minecraft folder; with more then just minecraft.jar)
Distributing pieces(not the whole) of information (especially in countries such as New Zealand(?) and sweden) is perfectly legal.
If it is provided as a link, nobody is at fault. It's legal.
>Implying I'm not missing something here.
Actually, people could get the game off of that, so it is illegal!
