You seriously SHOULD host 1.3 on the site. Especially since the 1.4 update completely breaks multiplayer. The whole reason myself and a friend paid for the game. I'm extremely dissapointed that the only thing we get from the company staff is about not uploading 1.3 and not even a mention that you are working on the lag problem. I was excited about buying this game, now i'm seriously re-thinking supporting indie development in the future. All the posts about 1.4 and we as customers don't even warrent a simple "We are aware of the problem". What i don't understand is how did such a glaring thing go un-noticed?
Anyhow, don't take my tone to be that i hate the company and that i am furious, I love what you guys have done, when i play minecraft i feel like this is the game i have dreamt about in my subconcious all my life.
I really wanted to support what you do but am just really dissapointed that you care more about policing uploads of 1.3 than doing something about 1.4 People are frustrated and want to play a game they paid for. At least give us 1.3 back until you fix 1.4.
If there is in fact work being done to fix the issues, then thank you. But just let us know that it is.
I think that's fair and if you have time to make posts about not uploading 1.3, then you have the time to give us such a post. Thanks.
Off-topic.. what do you mean 1.4 completely broke SMP? My server works perfect, no problems at all.
I also don't see what the issue with uploading out of date versions, or even current versions of the game if its available on the Minecraft.net website for anyone with interwebs to download. There needs to be a repo of older versions of the game I guess for those whiney individuals with ancient graphics cards and integrated graphics chipsets for when an update "breaks" the game. I realize that its against the EULA of Mojang for Minecraft, but I'm not sure what harm it procures if it doesn't make any bloody difference since you don't have an account, you don't have the game, unless you're a hacking shitstick who steals the game from another person or hacks a premium account for free, which neither of those things could or would end up as a result due to someone hosting the files for Minecraft in up-to-date or older builds.

Since the beginning of the forum we have always had the rule that users must not redistribute copies of the Minecraft files. This includes current and old versions, the only place users should be able to download copies of the Minecraft files should be minecraft.net (or any other official Mojang website).
After the 1.4 update we've noticed a huge rise in people uploading 1.3 and posting it here for download. This is NOT allowed and as is outlined in the rules, will result in a ban. We've been lenient and only given out 7 day bans for it, but we will extend these to permanent bans if people continue.
It is clearly outlined in both our rules and the minecraft terms of service (under "The one major rule") that this is unacceptable.
There is no excuse for it.
then(and i don't try to sound rude) but then maybe you should keep the previous version up for a while, that way people wont do that. because srously, how many people have mods that once MC updates (they cant stop the update even tho notch said he would implement that asking thing where it asks you if you want to update) they break and its kinda hard to play when your world corrupts 0_o so put that in mind and think on it plox and if possible relay it to notch(the older version thingy), would help moderators guard against forum threads that give older copies. OOOOORRRR a site with ALL the copies of minecraft (if i saw that i think i would go crazy from happiness). anyways here is 23 s to pay my bounty.

They cannot host the previous version because it is illegal. It doesn't really matter how much it breaks.
As for the new launcher: he clearly stated in his blog you have to download it.

In the meantime, I’ve uploaded the new game launcher, which you can download from here once the servers are back up and running.
On-Topic: I can see why you can distribute files, but if it's between friends that have the game bought, does it make any difference? I mean, they bought the game, but they can't download it because internet is down. Is that a reasonable situation?
It's still distributing files. But how did they manage to buy the game if the can't connect to the internet?
Question: Is it OK to redistribute the image files (as in, submit them to a website that archives video game textures/sprites)?
Technically speaking, they are a part of game and thus it is just as illegal.
And considering that these sprites are changing pretty often (something new gets added every few weeks), I think it would be safe to assume that they'll be outdated pretty quickly.
Then again, I don't think anyone here can stop you from that, so you can either do it anyway (ignorant approach), or ask Mojang staff for permission (nice approach, and a correct one, though I don't think you have a high chance of succeeding unless you are good at asking).
You couldn't be farther from the truth. Only the .jar files are non-distributable. The textures can be freely distributed to create new texture packs, so long as no monetary gain is involved.
It is illegal to upload it, please read the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Minecraft Eula
That may be true, but because of that illegal sites are more likely to be able to give it out without paying. I think there SHOULD be an official site somewhere in the Minecraft servers that allows paid users to download previous versions should an upgrade be potentially bugged in some way, or its incompatible with their system for reasons unknown. Maybe, for what ever reason, a person wants to play around with the older alpha versions, this would allow them to do that, and possibly see the different steps Minecraft has taken over the duration its been worked on and developed to reach beta. This would at least further prevent users from trying to give it out themselves.
You forget that the actual jar file that controls almost everything is completely useless without a paid account.
You cant log in to the launcher without one. Also, you can download beta for free from minecraft.net but cant use it without paying. Just telling you.
Remember that for next time, because, as outlined in the rules, distribution of the .jar or anything located in the .minecraft folder is not legal.
This makes no sense. I can see stuff like not distributing anything in the bin or resources folder, but why can't we distribute our save files and screen shots? Both of these are found in the .minecraft folder, so your statement means that we cannot share [physically] what we have created, nor can we share screen shots. Both of [the save files and screen shots] are our own work, so it falls under the guidelines/rules, so we have the legal right to distribute our saves and screen shots.

Do not distribute anything I've made. This includes the client and the server software for the game. This also includes modified versions of anything I've made.
Technically, he only made the code that creates your saves and screenshots. If he had control over that, then programming language creators would have control over what their buyers made. I'm certain it's perfectly fine to share saves and screenshots.
I also believe, technically, this means any user who distributes any modification to the Minecraft client that is not 3rd party, but directly modifies the code of Minecraft, be it the server or the game client is also eligible for a ban.
As in accordance with: If you've bought the game, you may play around with it and modify it. I'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changes.
How do you get the option to install updates? When I logged in recently, it automatically upgraded me to 1.4.
Download the latest launcher.
The new launcher doesn't seem to be any different than the one I was using. There are no extra features or options to choose whether to allow updates or not and I was forced to update as well. I don't mind, I'm just wondering if anything has actually changed from the 1.3 launcher?
there is an option but you must set it to will force update with the 1.4 luancher

Maybe you should consider uploading older versions. There is no harm in it, the game is unplayable without an account (or crack). And by baning users for sharing the older version on your forums you will only send them to other download sites like piratebay and such that actually let you download the cracked version so you dont even have to pay for an account.
The DMCA doesn't remotely apply since sharing game files wouldn't be useful at all for circumventing any DRM. All it is is simple copyright infringement, like uploading a copyrighted song.
Hey, I have a question, my server which I'm an admin on currently has stayed at 1.4 because things like Bukkit are yet to be updated to 1.5, this means that I can't gain access and I don't know how to revert to 1.4 without being able to obtain the 1.4 jar.
How would I go about doing this if downloading Minecraft Files is illegal?
You shouldnt have updated until you knew there was a release for bukkit...thats why you always back up previous versions just in case.

not distribution - modding your client and giving it to someone ONE!
