I do believe this is called money-grubbing. What's next, charging us to use the forums?
what's wrong with requesting donations to boost the user experience for you guys? This money isn't paying for our yacht, it's paying for an improvement to the forums that benefits you guys most :smile.gif:
If you're not happy with it you're not obligated to donate, it's clear quite a few people do want to help, so... money grubbing implies we're doing it to fund our own lifestyles, but we're doing it to buy more servers to improve this place -- we can post all the server info when it's bought if you like.

Next donation drive should totally be for a yacht, though. travel around the coast and pick up minecrafters, and have a room full of computers and internet. I'd donate for that. :tongue.gif:

When I first saw this, I was appalled. Then as I cooled down, I realized, most people don't understand exactly what it takes to run these two sites.
We don't simply rent a VPS from some po-dunk nobody for $10/month. We have servers located in Tier 1 providers. We selected Softlayer in particular because after careful analysis of the traffic patterns, we noticed that 63% of our traffic comes from the US, where 73% of that comes from Comcast. Softlayer has direct ASN peering with Comcast in all four of their datacenters.
Each month the servers already cost us ~$500. We're planning on doubling that once the first round of ad revenue comes in, however, we noticed the need for it sooner, so we left it in the hands of the community.
Aera, our server admin from the UK, takes care of most things during the UK timezones, and I take care of them in the US timezones. Citric takes care of maintaining the community, appointing moderators, and administrators. Ensuring people are happy etc, etc. We spend on average, 5-6 hours a day, checking stats, ensuring processes are running smoothly, checking mail queues, etc, etc.
We do all of this for free. Aera and I have personally spent upwards of $3k on keeping these sites afloat. We get over 3 million uniques per month, and are in the top 7,000 sites in all the US.
So, if you still feel like we're "money grubbing", then I'm sorry. I don't want you to feel like your being forced into donating, and I don't want people feeling like we're going out and buying yachts with their donations!
For reference, this is the system we are planning on purchasing with the donations:
Sorry but ive never used paypal to donate before. Where do we put our usersname during checkout? is it after I click the yellow donate button or am I missing something at the checkout? I dont see any place to put in our username.

I'm not exactly sure, it should give you a place to put a message in. If not, then you can just PM your transaction ID to me and I'll make sure you get your sponsor title.

It happens on the confirmation page. It's only a text link about half-way down the page.
EDIT - Ninja'd!
I wanted to say thanks to the mods and admins for the site. I check the forums religiously and I really think this has become a great community. Keep up the great work!! (And if we need to have ads to help support the forum, then so be it...we'll be able to deal with 100 less pixels on our screens if it means keeping this great forum running smoothly!)

Monkey Mines is a small 18+ Whitelisted Realms server that also allows families. We're currently looking for new players if they're not jerks.
I'll be donating when I get some dough later this week. Most likely $20 USD or so..

Curse PremiumWill somebody please clear up what the 1 hour free time is for? I really don't get it ;o
this, except I'm in Hihg School :sad.gif:
edit: Oops forgot the part about adding my name to a message ;_;
Basically it gets you on the beta list for minecraftservers.com, and lets you run an SMP server for one hour for free.
It's normal cost is $0.10/hour.
Send me the transaction ID from your email in a PM. I'll get you squared away.
