Well the best forum software would be TairoBB imo.

Citricsquid, could you email me the stuff for this forum so I could play around with it seeing as it wil- oh wait, nevermind. toasting in epic bread Make sure to get the POP3 settings right. On my PhpBB site, it didn't support "mailto:()" function, thus meaning I had to use Windows live Mail. And I failed epically. .-.

First you will be baked, and then there will be cake.
PHPBB is so popular that as a result its often hacked.
IMO, your better off using Simple Machines Forum (SMF), it might not have as many features as PHPBB, but it has less exploitation occurances and has some really good modifications.
Or better yet get vBulletin. It's a commercial script though (i own 2 licenses), its expensive though and costs $195 for a license though. It's way more secure though since the source isn't freely available and on top of it, when exploits are found they are fixed within a day or two! It also has hundreds of modifications (and most are really good).

Please link me to all these so called hackings. There have been a few PHPBB exploits but there are very few that cause any problems and these are normally resolved within a few hours. Link me up!

What the hell? I remember you saying that this was the exact reason you didn't want to switch over to phpBB.

no? I don't like PHPBB because it's bloated ****, but it IS secure. I've never said otherwise.
Stick with this... it's working fine. The only problem I have is that it doesn't show me what I've already read in the same session. PhpBB is a downgrade.

Stop telling which forum we should use, just because PHPBB gets assaulted by bots doesn't mean it's bad.. there's other ways to stop them. It's also fun to ban bots every second. :biggrin.gif: (It's to kill the boredom.)
Most captcha's do not work. Bots are so sophisticated that they can get around all those captcha's listed on that page.
The only way to sufficiently block them is using the following scripts on the website:
DNP Firewall http://www.silveryhat.com/delynie/f142/ ... -6986.html
The site is in Philippine, but the code to enable the script is in english. The script is great, since installing it on my vBulletin forum, bot registrations have completely stopped! Before, i was getting around 2 bot registration every day! On top of it, the script helps reduce DDOS's.

DnP Firewall Gateway was designed to stand against the massive DoS attack targeted DnP Network™ few years ago. Upon installed, it has been reducing the severe level of many incidents and preventing my forum from being overload ever since. It also nearly blocks away all the automated bots that come to register for spamming on the forum. The last release was almost 3 years ago and there had never been any update to the MOD. Version 0.3 came with many issues though it was very stable. I decide to give another upgrade and simplify the code a little for another release. Don't hesitate to install DnP Firewall Gateway for your forum and hope you will find it as useful as I do.
*This Firewall is compatible with All PHP Forum systems and Search Engines Friendly*

Stop Forum Spam http://stopforumspam.com/
This one has mods for several forums (vBulletin, PHPBB, SMF, etc.). It's a database of spammers and when someone registers on your forum, it checks against the database and either allows or denies the registration. I had this one on my site for over a year, it blocked a lot but also a lot of spammers still managed to get through.
This provides access to a RBL type system for forum admins, listing known spam IP / email / usernames. The RBL database is provided by www.stopforumspam.com. You do NOT need an API key from the website in order to access the database. only to submit data if you should wish to do so.
At the point of user registration, the mod checks if the IP number / provided username / email addresses appear on a block list and can block the registration.
Whilst this isnt the most perfect way to stop all forum spam, its another step that spammers have to overcome.
It checks with a remote database of known forum spammers. Their IP number, email address and forum username are tested and based on your configuration, you can reject / log / accept user registrations based on what you get back.
Of these 2 plugins, the first one is good for blocking automatic spammer registrations and the second one is good for blocking people who manually register on forums to spam them.

I think you'll find that recaptcha.net is pretty much infallible, of course there are exceptions, but I would challenge you (and give you $10) if you can find a bot that can crack recaptcha.net captcha.
You people are tempting me to write a recaptcha-thwarter. It wouldn't even be all that extremely difficult. I won't, because my time is already occopied, but here's how it would work:
Step 1: Use a neural network
Step 2: Take a load of CAPTCHA examples
Step 3: Teach the brain to recognize letters in the captions from left-to-right using the examples.
Step 4: CAPTCHA doesn't stand a chance
We already use neural networks for handwriting and speech recognition. There's no reason at all why this wouldn't work.

I challenge you to write a good enough OCR system to "thwart" recaptcha. They're constantly evolving, even if you managed (which you won't) it'd work for a few hours. Recaptcha have amazing technology and ideas, if you can build software to crack recaptcha you'll be a hero for many blackhats.

We are working on it. The skin is almost done, and I need to contact Aera on how he's doing on his end. It won't take 6 months.
