Th'ats really super, mine is sevon billion times larger and melons don't give much food.
One melon gives 3-5 slices. That's 3-5 more melon plants, for more slices, more seeds, more plants. Stackable to 64, each one gives +1 hunger, so you literally can refill your hunger bar from emptty 6-7 times per stack. It's an amazing food source.
How does it look? Green on gold.. Actually sounds like a really good idea!
SInce melon is a craftable block if you have 9 slices and the blocks act like a regular block of say gold, iron, or diamond it worlds like building a house our of any other craft able block. Plus window panes function on the melons as well as doors haha. I just went to a NPC village and converted all their farms into melon farms using seeds I found in the mining tunnels and now usually can get a stack of 64 blocks per day lending itself to Meloncraft.
1 melon can heal a lot but each slice heals 1 hunger and each slice is eaten separately but takes as much time to eat as anything else. You could eat 1 porkchop in the time it takes to eat 4 melons. While it is stackable to 64, so is every other food. It is an unlimited food source but the trade-off isn't worth it, in my opinion.

Why not? Why isn't it worth it? Eating doesn't regenerate your health until your hunger bar is completely full, so you need to run away from a fight when your health is low anyways.

If I'm sprinting around looking for a cave, I'll eat when my hunger bar is down to three so I can sprint again. I'd rather eat 2 porkchops and be on my way than waste time eating 6 or 7.

True, but since pigs are persistent and no longer respawn, you'll eventually need to switch to something more reliable.

That's true if you're building a house and claiming land. It's very good to farm. I do it on my server. Melon and wheat is the way to go. But in single player I don't build ****, I just go cave to cave, so I hunt on the way.
So I guess that answers that. If you're settling down, farming is the best way to go (preferably chickens). If you explore, hunt.

You can stack bread up to 64 and they give +2.5 hunger per piece.
Crazy huge food supply now...

Respond regardless.
inefficient as it may be, I have more melons than I know what to do with now....
Just this small farm has more food than I can consume ever.

I know there are many here that can blow me out of the water, I just posted this as an example of a simple unlimited food supply.
Fun too!
