I have been reading people's opinions on the Endermen since Notch announced that he would nerf their block moving ability. Those that complain can't seem to grasp how many ways there are to handle them already. If they are taking stuff from your house, how are they even getting close to it? Build a moat to kill them in water. Light up the immediate area so they don't spawn nearby. Build thick perimeter walls that you can easily repair when you are up to it. Endermen aren't precise, they don't have a plan. They just like to move stuff.
There is some stuff that can be done with the Endermen to add more. Frankly I wish they didn't have a sound at all short of their footsteps until Mojang could add in their own custom sounds. I hear enough zombie sounds as it is. But nerfing one unique feature about them will only nerf the end product of the game all the more. Minecraft is either about crafting in peaceful, or crafting in a challenging environment. If people can't handle the challenging environment then they can just go to the peaceful setting or creative mode. If they do want the challenging environment while building, then you adapt to the circumstances. With spiders you build overhangs in your walls or even add slow sand that they can't climb on. With skeletons and zombies you build walls at least two high to keep them from getting over. You can even make a moat of lava to fry any buggers who get too close. That would include Endermen as well, but simple water works fine for them and then you can just have one meter high walls to keep out skellys, creepers, and zombies.
Minecraft is about being creative and imaginative on your own terms. I see Endermen as adding a new challenge to that. Nerfing their ability to take blocks will only dampen the experience for everyone.
Don't nerf the Endermen, Notch. I would as soon see them getting buffed, frankly.

Dude you got it. You are the only other person I know who gets minecraft. Keep postin man.
It's my world, I don't want mobs touching it without me around. Creepers, that different - they destroy the environment right where I am, and I know what's been destroyed right away. With Endermen, you'll never know what's missing until you're going along your minecart rail only to find someone removed the block...
Its really a moot point though now that there's a mod that removes their block-moving ability. People who like it can keep it. The rest of us can opt out with the mod.
I really agree with your passionate statement but in my own opinion, a mob that just randomly picks up blocks isn't what I wanted in Minecraft. I was hoping Enderman would be a bit more scary. Like they could also pick you up and toss you around and stuff. I guess nerfing the Enderman's block snatching ability isn't the way to go, but maybe he's just changing it so it makes it more difficult. Like you stated, you can just build a thick wall or moat around your house to keep them away. That's way to easy, they need to come up with a new way so they aren't so easy on you.
So IMO - I am caught up in the middle of agreeing and disagreeing with the nerf. I'm really edging near agreeing though because: I hate how they grief. It makes it so hard to make good mob traps with them. (I know I can use a 2 high ceiling but I need more head room for additional contraptions)

I am perfectly fine with that option of just using a mod. That is what mods are for, to edit the game for those few who want to tweak it a certain way. But changing the base game is just bad mojo to my thinking.

That would be the perfect unique thing to avoid with the Enderman. Instead of them just running up and killing you, they instead either toss you high in the air in a random direction with a small chance to survive the fall considering the environment, or teleporting you far away, like 1 km the most.
Notch! If you nerf the Enderman, give them this ability instead!

Its perfect, really, recently I encountered 2 Enderman close to each other. Luckily I had my trusty Pumpkin helmet, that lets me see them without them getting aggressive. They don't pick up stuff that often!. They moved, TOGETHER less then 5 blocks. I also recorded the whole event, maybe one day I'll upload it to youtube.
Pluses to OP. Endermen are VASTLY easier to manage than creepers. no nerf is needed and i would actually like to see them buffed up to be more dangerous
well i sort of disagree with you because many ppl complained about the limited stuff that enderman can't build. i agree with the above comment: there has to be some solution to keep away enderman, plus even if you light up your house, enderman will still just pick up part of your house anyway. guys why buff the enderman, don't you think of how others feel about the enderman and how frustrated they are? it's like you're just thinking about yourself. THINK OF THE DESIGN PROCESS!! EVALUATE!!!! notch is thinking carefully and if buffing the enderman more is all it takes, you're just making him doing it as if you're just demanding him. let him choose not you, you can suggest but you're not him to choose. think carefully about saying "buffing" because not everyone likes enemy mobs to be buffed.
I'm uncertain why Steve is the only character in the minecraft universe that can have an impact on the world around him at will. I've been itching for a mob that will not be stopped by simply placing some blocks in between you and it.To rectify the issue of random misplacement and my craving for a more driven adversary than a creeper, I propose that Enderman only start moving blocks when they are blocks in the way of getting to you. In other words, he'll carve right through a wall to get to you if you **** it off. Oh, and actually do a threatening amount of damage. That would be terrifying, and completely avoidable. If it destroys your structure trying to get to you, it was your fault. I like that idea :smile.gif:
In combiantion with this one (mine) :
I think it would be cool if Enderman could draw light from the world, so he's always surrounded by a sphere of darkness ( not complete of course) but in direct sunlight exactly dark enough to spawn mobs ... would make himself invincible to sunlight, too. Something like a inverted torch, like darthmaulerX stated ^^
I think that would make him scary
THAT would make him scary as hell and really dangerous :biggrin.gif: Also, the block-removing ability would make some sense, which I would prefer very much. Somewhat like a rampaging teleporting spawner ^^

So your saying we have to keep buildings small and simple and then wall and moat everything in a game that is described on it's own website as "...a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine."
No more large structures, no more redstone contraptions, no more kilometer long railways (the track will always be out up ahead). The larger the project the more time you will have to spend on boring and pointless upkeep. On top of that they currently mess up the terrain generator's work. These are only some of the reasons why many people treat the endermen with such animosity.
There is some stuff that can be done with the Endermen to add more. Frankly I wish they didn't have a sound at all short of their footsteps until Mojang could add in their own custom sounds. I hear enough zombie sounds as it is.
All this is fine, just aesthetics of a mob, I am indifferent.
But nerfing one unique feature about them will only nerf the end product of the game all the more. Minecraft is either about crafting in peaceful, or crafting in a challenging environment. If people can't handle the challenging environment then they can just go to the peaceful setting or creative mode.
On SMP servers if a player did what an endermen did (i.e. randomly messing up the environment or other players structures behind their backs), guess what would happen to them ... they would get banned or spawn jailed until they learned how to behave. I don't view this as a challenge as the block moving ability will almost never endanger the player character, just waste their time with pointless clean up when there are much more interesting things they could be doing. Also, the main draw of minecraft is the combination of building, exploring and fighting monsters, the last two of which are effectively neutered in creative mode.

Would it surprise you that I have only built walls and overhangs in one of of my many maps. The reason being is that I don't need them. Just look outside see what's around and kill it. Are monsters really that scary?

Don't nerf the Endermen, Notch. I would as soon see them getting buffed, frankly.
Many players had their experience dampened by the addition of a mechanic that randomly moves and deletes blocks beyond the players control (which is all it amounts to in the end), it severely limits their creativity and imagination if they are limited to building structures that must be designed a certain way in order for them not to get torn apart. In other words they can't be "creative and imaginative in their own terms anymore."
Remove their ability to move blocks (unless the player has some of control over when they do it i.e. only when looked at and in an effort to get at you), give them new sound effects (which should be coming), give some more incentive for fighting them (should be accomplished once ender pearls are given a use) and maybe increase their combat abilities. Those are my suggestions.

When no one was looking, the Endermen took forty blocks.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.

Do you intend to insult everyone's intelligence? Clearly, if someone doesn't like them moving blocks, they actually don't know how to prevent it! Thank GOD Samsonguy920 made ANOTHER pointless topic to inform everyone to build a ****ing moat. You're a goddamned genius.
You even conveniently brushed over the many other issues they create. You haven't read a damn thing about a subject that has been laid out thoroughly to excess. Stop making new retarded topics because you're too lazy to search (aka scroll down a few topics). This block moving sentiment has devolved into irrational whining.
If Endermen were never made to move blocks, youd never have noticed the difference and you know it.
I'm going to be a hypocrite and say people need to stop giving these threads attention.
