@ Krova, read more carefully :wink.gif: I described them more or less as walking spawn-areas :laugh.gif:
That was the whole idea to suck out the light so it gets dark enough to spawn hostiles ^^
Edit : Also I think a sphere of darkness surrounding them, with their eyes glowing out from it ... could get really creepy
Good point, but I did mention that I'd rather then act the same way spawners do, rather than just having mobs spawn due o the darkness around them.
Also, to everyone quoting my post and bitching about it: Just because people have the same opinion, it doesn't make us some hive mind of "go play on peaceful" legionaries. I hate when people say that. Also, learn to scroll down.
And, as for a constructive argument, I liked that endermen moved blocks out in the world because they would mark chunks that I've visited before. If I went exploring, on the way home, I'd frequently watch out for trees or dirt that endermen have tampered with as markers that I'm on the right track. Like breaking twigs on your way down a path.
That's not to say that I can't do it myself, it was just a nice feature that came from them.
When people compare the endermen to creepers, I think they're forgetting one thing: The player must cause the creeper to be destructive. This is an incredibly interesting mechanic, to be honest. In ways, it means I could cobble together a house out of dirt or sand and it would be just as secure as a house made of cobblestone from creepers -- unless I run to my house with a creeper on me and let it blow up. Endermen just... kinda destroy. You can stop them, but you stop them in (somtimes) uglier ways, though to be fair, fences look pretty nice.
I guess it depends on how the majority of players want to play. I definitely like the idea of the bad things being player inflicted, and always within the player's presence (And this is how Notch apparently likes to make the game -- read http://notch.tumblr.com/post/8208212863/the-psychology-of-the-reticle-and-the-feeling-of closely, and pay attention to this quote:
One of the biggest game design decisions in Minecraft is that all (well, most) negative things that affect the world or the player should happen near the player, and be clear to the player. That’s why creepers only explode near players, and that’s why fires stopped spreading indefinitely.
Ignoring, just for one second, the usage of "most", it could be that Notch actually did this himself -- he played the game some himself and then thought it a bad idea. But let's re-add the word "most." Then it could be an instance of Notch catering to the majority rule. I guess it depends on how you read his words. Perhaps "most" is referring to negative things that can't happen only around the player. Forest fires from lava pools? Those happen the moment the chunk's generated and populated, and it gets its first ticks. You almost always see them after it started.
So.. uh... tl;dr: I don't know why Notch is nerfing enderman block carrying :tongue.gif:
EDIT: I need to proofread sometimes.
EDIT2: more rewording.
I liked the ability. If people don't like it they should play on peaceful or creative, or GASP! build an actual defensive structure that can defend against them, I mean it's called survival for a reason.
It's also called Minecraft, and this was the adventure update - the block shuffling hardly fulfils either of those. As for survival, the design is such that at some point you're going to start thriving. I thought a true survival mode was something planned for the future - but the current "survival" mode obviously lets you go beyond merely that. I prefer something where I have to work to build things, rather than just being handed everything in creative, but I'm not that interested in spending all my time just fighting. Surely there's room for that.
I see that you've missed much about the discussion about the Endermen in the few threads on this board. Let me break it down for you.
* Endermen removes blocks regardless of player interaction. This means that the map slowly gets destroyed even if you do try to go about killing them, because they pick up blocks as soon as they spawn. This is different from creepers because they explode purely due to player interaction. If you get blown up by a creeper, it's because you messed up, and people can accept that. Enderman removes blocks no matter what you do, it's not something you can control and punishes you for it anyway. Do you remember what Notch said a long time ago about what he wanted Minecraft to be?
* Endermen delete blocks when they die. When the sun rises, or when they walk in water or when a player kills them, they don't drop the blocks they are carrying. These blocks are effectively deleted from the game world and causes the eventual erosion of the map where you cannot replace the blocks that have been lost.
* The main purpose of why Notch added the Enderman was because of the creepy/scary factor he wanted to add into the game. The Enderman's main purpose was never intended to be annoying. As of now, the Enderman poses no threat or challenge to anyone's survival because they are laughably easy to kill. They are more like pests rather than something to be feared.
Removing the Enderman's ability to carry blocks does not diminish it's creepy/horror factor because it never had one to begin with anyway.
* We are not asking for the removal or nerf of the Enderman, it's already **** weak to begin with. Instead, we are only asking for the Enderman to be redesigned better to be more menacing and scary for the player without being out of control, destroying maps for no reason and without player interaction.
Indeed, I quite dislike what the endermen are doing to the landscape and to complex constructions. They are, however, too weak in combat. If they had a bit more life, and if instead of grabbing random blocks they would dislodge blocks as they charge at you, that would be much better.
@ Krova I like your idea, but I think mine would fit better. Especially since Endermen wouldn't burn in Sunlight and a group of them would already produce a rather big bubble of darkness. Maybe even add an additive effect like 3 overlapping EndermanSpheres are 3 times as big or something similar.
I just guessed 5 walking actual spawners could get a serious overkill :laugh.gif:
Muhaha, I just noticed that darksphere ability would make them "Endermen -Bringer of Dusk" :laugh.gif: Sounds better than "Enderman - Griefer of stuff" ...
I'm uncertain why Steve is the only character in the minecraft universe that can have an impact on the world around him at will. I've been itching for a mob that will not be stopped by simply placing some blocks in between you and it.
To rectify the issue of random misplacement and my craving for a more driven adversary than a creeper, I propose that Enderman only start moving blocks when they are blocks in the way of getting to you. In other words, he'll carve right through a wall to get to you if you **** it off. Oh, and actually do a threatening amount of damage.
That would be terrifying, and completely avoidable. If it destroys your structure trying to get to you, it was your fault.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I imagined only one spawning at a time, and even then, they're quite rare. That'd further increase the "wow, shitbrix" factor when seeing one, I think.
I read some people saying that the endermen can't get past a moat or a fence. Twice I've had them almost get to me on top of a three story building: First time it went through the wall and was walking around on the second floor, and the second time it was stuck in the outside wall, right at the third floor level. So why wouldn't they be able to get through a fence or moat when they teleport?
Sure, they can teleport past said obstacles, but this is entirely player inflicted (hey, it's that interesting mechanic again!) If an enderman is teleporting, this is because the player allowed them to do so.

Wow. That's... actually one of the coolest ideas I've heard yet. That would be indeed be awesome.

Now that's what I'm looking for. The unfortunate part, however, is they do not reside just above ground. For all we know, they could be picking up the resources in the caves, and despawning without placing them back down. And then it comes to the eyesore of days on end of endermen leaving marks, but that's totally up to the player's ability to care about the landscape.

Heck yeah! This would actually be quite an interesting mechanic, and once again, it would be another instance of that "player-inflicted" mechanic I've mentioned that I find so interesting. Have them tear down entire walls to get to you!
I wasn't being sarcastic. They seriously needed to be more destructive. They can't move fences or stairs for that matter. So if you have a well lit area surrounded by a fence, or if your walls were 2 blocks thick made of stairs facing each other you're completely safe from 'em.
I want my constructions to look nice.
I don't want them all to be surrounded by fences and double walls and all that other crap you're talking about.
I especially don't want to surround every tree with a moat.
IMO, all Endermen needed was a limit to what blocks they can carry.
Keeping them restricted to only nature blocks (Dirt/Sand/TreeTrunks/leaves/grass) would have been the best idea, then people's buildings/farms would generally be left alone.

This is great too, and it wouldn't change how we think of Endermen too much.
@ Redenbacher09 : Combining your idea and mine(see below) would make him "Rampaging Enderman, bringer of dusk" :laugh.gif:
P.S:
I think it would be cool if Enderman could draw light from the world, so he's always surrounded by a sphere of darkness ( not complete of course) but in direct sunlight exactly dark enough to spawn mobs ... would make himself invincible to sunlight, too. Something like a inverted torch, like darthmaulerX stated ^^

Unfortunately, it wouldn't solve the problem of players finding it just pointlessly annoying that Endermen run around tearing up the landscape. It's been compared to creepers blowing up on the horizon without provocation.

Although that would be an improvement on the loss of resources found in caves and player-owned structures, it doesn't solve a related punishment. The landscape turns into a scattered mess at no fault of the player. I personally love the way my swamp looks, and I am not going to change myself from adventurer/survivor to the world's peaceful-playing janitor.
