Do their block moving ability even serve a purpose? If not, it would be great to give it a purpose instead of nerfing it. I would like to see them build crazy stuff for a rite or some other weird things.
TBH I like the idea of them being able to build something, but I would want them unable to destroy player structures, and I could live if they didn't have this ability at all.
However, if they do lose this ability, there should be something that makes them not suck anymore. Like... maybe make them actually scary and able to harm the player (out of every Endermen I have fought, none have actually managed to even hurt me, with the exception of two in a testing save)
I liked the ability. If people don't like it they should play on peaceful or creative, or GASP! build an actual defensive structure that can defend against them, I mean it's called survival for a reason.
I'm thrilled that they are planning to change Endermen to not be able to move any block. Or if they choose to limit it to just dirt, grass, sand, and gravel, that would probably be fine too.
To the small minority of people that actually liked Endermen acting as NPC griefers, I'll suggest right back the same thing that I heard from many of you when others complained about Endermen in the first place:
If you don't like the nerf, you can always mod their block-carrying abilities back in!! :smile.gif:
I still don't get all the hate that is spread in both directions. I had some problems with them (Mob Grinder and stuff ), I didn't find them especially creepy and viewed their ability as rather pointless. To sum it up, mediocre in all ways.
I can understand why Notch wants to take out this feature, but I think he's doing it because this ability is not awesome.
Even if he would leave it in I'm sure people would like it if Enderman actually did somthing halfway cool with the stolen blocks. Or have a nice possibility to secure areas with blocks Enderman can't take etc.

Yes because survival means having random blocks moved around or deleted for no purpose but to "creep you out". If it was challenging or done intelligently I think a lot of people would be fine with it. However, as it is it's just an annoyance and adds nothing more to the game than what a minorly corrupted save function would do. Not cool.
I don't think I've ever been more disappointed by a tweet.
Now they're barely a threat and they don't move blocks (which was my favorite thing about them)? I can't believe he gave in to a bunch of whiny kids.
Next we'll see creepers' explosions removed.
Creepers don't just randomly blow up for no reason and mess up the landscape. There really is no point to them randomly moving blocks and if you find that part of them "cool" or "interesting" then we'll just have to agree to disagree on the meanings of those words.
Now odds are Enderman will be just watching stick figures with purple eyes.
Boo
Yes, because teleporting monsters that only attack if you look directly at them and also happen to be the first and only mob whose mouth actually animates when aggro'ed simply isn't enough for us.
After reading some of the posts, I'm warming up to a redesign of the Endermen. Everyone's crying out for something that will slaughter the player when angered, so I like that idea.
Someone also pointed out that having them rearrange blocks out in the world just make sit a bit uglier (pieces missing from trees, weird holes in the ground, etc), which I agree with. It almost makes me want to suggest that they only take player blocks, but then their combat difficulty would become more of a speed bump than a feature.
I like the idea of a reverse torch. That's neat. But better yet:
Why not have them act as a reverse torch and as a mob spawner? They could summon zombies all around them, and continue doing so until killed. The fact that they can roam would make it terrifying, especially if the zombies crowded around it (unless they see the player of course). Also, this way, looking at an Enderman would be something more... substantial. It's angry that you got through its wall of zombie minions.

Excellent point, duly noted, though I did find it "cool" and "interesting".

Please explain the benefits of having endermen move blocks that can overtake the reasons why they shouldn't.
The major issue with the "debate" on whether or not endermen moving blocks is a good thing is that it ISN'T a debate. The side that supports block movement does not provide any reasoning for their support; rather, they go off making ridiculous suggestions or short-sighted responses like "go build a moat" or "go play on peaceful".
Apparently, the only "reasoning" that the block movement is beneficial is because it adds challenge to the game. However, not once have I seen anybody state what that challenge is AND why this benefit overcomes the negatives of the ability.
Mst people would probably be perfectly happy if Endermen only moved blocks when angered and attacking the player.
But the other side of table is always in "love it or leave it" mode in favor of noise filtering, so it may get nerfed into non-existence because of all the drama rather than discussing the issue.
If people don't like it they should play on peaceful or creative, or GASP! build an actual defensive structure that can defend against them, I mean it's called survival for a reason.
@ Krova, read more carefully :wink.gif: I described them more or less as walking spawn-areas :laugh.gif:
That was the whole idea to suck out the light so it gets dark enough to spawn hostiles ^^
Edit : Also I think a sphere of darkness surrounding them, with their eyes glowing out from it ... could get really creepy
I wouldn't mind it if they spawned with a special 'Enderblock' that they could move around, but I am sick of coming out every morning and seeing my beach and backyard filled with potholes and random sandbars that disrupt my boating expeditions.
Hmmm. This is certainly a disappointment, but maybe it can do something else. Maybe it could disguise itself as another mob, then have it's eyes the same as it is now. Then when you look at it, it changes back and kills you.

That would be a pretty cool mob actually. Though I'm not sure it would fit into the mechanics already done for the Enderman. I think they would be just fine and possibly the most interesting mob with a slightly better teleportation algorithm and a few more buffs

True that, who looks at an enderman two blocks above it's head? And I think it should be able to teleport to flying people. >:biggrin.gif:

I see that you've missed much about the discussion about the Endermen in the few threads on this board. Let me break it down for you.
* Endermen removes blocks regardless of player interaction. This means that the map slowly gets destroyed even if you do try to go about killing them, because they pick up blocks as soon as they spawn. This is different from creepers because they explode purely due to player interaction. If you get blown up by a creeper, it's because you messed up, and people can accept that. Enderman removes blocks no matter what you do, it's not something you can control and punishes you for it anyway. Do you remember what Notch said a long time ago about what he wanted Minecraft to be?
Notch:
"One of the biggest game design decisions in Minecraft is that all (well, most) negative things that affect the world or the player should happen near the player, and be clear to the player. That’s why creepers only explode near players, and that’s why fires stopped spreading indefinitely. This is somewhat related to my dislike of mazes in game design, where the player has no way of knowing or figuring out before hand what decision is the correct decision. Don’t penalize the player for things they can’t control.
* Endermen delete blocks when they die. When the sun rises, or when they walk in water or when a player kills them, they don't drop the blocks they are carrying. These blocks are effectively deleted from the game world and causes the eventual erosion of the map where you cannot replace the blocks that have been lost.
* The main purpose of why Notch added the Enderman was because of the creepy/scary factor he wanted to add into the game. The Enderman's main purpose was never intended to be annoying. As of now, the Enderman poses no threat or challenge to anyone's survival because they are laughably easy to kill. They are more like pests rather than something to be feared.
Removing the Enderman's ability to carry blocks does not diminish it's creepy/horror factor because it never had one to begin with anyway.
* We are not asking for the removal or nerf of the Enderman, it's already **** weak to begin with. Instead, we are only asking for the Enderman to be redesigned better to be more menacing and scary for the player without being out of control, destroying maps for no reason and without player interaction.
LMAO
