I don't mind either very much, but I guess that will ease some minds, so I wanted to share ^^
P.S:
I think it would be cool if Enderman could draw light from the world, so he's always surrounded by a sphere of darkness ( not complete of course) but in direct sunlight exactly dark enough to spawn mobs ... would make himself invincible to sunlight, too. Something like a inverted torch, like darthmaulerX stated ^^
P.P.S : I think this idea deserves more attention, too :
From Redenbacher09
I'm uncertain why Steve is the only character in the minecraft universe that can have an impact on the world around him at will. I've been itching for a mob that will not be stopped by simply placing some blocks in between you and it.
To rectify the issue of random misplacement and my craving for a more driven adversary than a creeper, I propose that Enderman only start moving blocks when they are blocks in the way of getting to you. In other words, he'll carve right through a wall to get to you if you **** it off. Oh, and actually do a threatening amount of damage.
That would be terrifying, and completely avoidable. If it destroys your structure trying to get to you, it was your fault.
^Agreed. If anything the endermen needed to be more destructive, not less. A moat or a fence was all that was needed to stop them from getting near your home.
I wasn't being sarcastic. They seriously needed to be more destructive. They can't move fences or stairs for that matter. So if you have a well lit area surrounded by a fence, or if your walls were 2 blocks thick made of stairs facing each other you're completely safe from 'em.

Then they should be able to teleport through walls. Making Endermen an in-game terrain noise-filter is probably the most frustrating and least actually-dangerous thing they could possibly have as a special ability. There's plenty of other things that could be done to make them actually challenging. For one thing, they might be made to actually attack the player occasionally. XD

Pre-1.8 release, the impression I got was that Endermans were going to be the bogeyman, if not the ultimate bogeyman. They had the look by being all black and glowy. If you got their attention, they also teleported to get to you to kill you. And oh yea, they moved blocks.
Then 1.8 comes out and.... well... they really weren't all that. They're in to kill by hand, and water kills them dead too. To get them to pay attention to you, you have to into the Mouse settings, set your mouse point size to X-Large, place a block down in front of them, and scream into your microphone all sorts of childish insults.
The biggest issue to come out of the mob's implementation ironically was the moving block feature which doesn't really fit into the bogeyman persona.
My changes:
Forget nerfing the moving block feature and simply remove it... temporarily from the game.
Make the Endermans bad ass, make it easier to get their attention, and make it so players will more or less die everytime them come across and tick off an Enderman.
THEN
Make tree blocks fall much like Sand/Gravel.
AND THEN
Create another mob, and I'd go with a worm (thinking of the Sandworms from Dune). 2 blocks tall, 2 blocks wide, and whatever long.
I don't know what is capable within the code, but I'd make them a permanent mob if possible and very rare. How rare? A handful at most, with a very small chance of adding another one when you cause the map to render new land as you explore outwards
Where they spawn is their lair.
They are able to destroy blocks at a certain slow rate, they venture out from their lairs only at night (or day) and return to sleep in their lairs during the day (or night). The blocks they destroy (all but obsidian and bedrock) are eaten by the worm.
They excrete behind them, or perhaps in their lair some new block or item (again thinking of Dune with the spices that the Sandworms excreted). This new block/item is then used for crafting something... cure spider poison, craft lanterns with sun level light, craft poison,
Well, it's needs work and I don't even know if it possible with the code as it exists today, but that is what I would do if I was in charge.
With these two changes, Endermans are made into the ultimate bogeyman. The don't mess with people's structures since they aren't that rare. Then another mob is made that is rare, destroys blocks, likely won't mess with peoples structures all the much (especially above ground), and fits into the idea of something that should move/destroy blocks.
I think it would be cool if Enderman could draw light from the world, so he's always surrounded by a sphere of darkness ( not complete of course) but in direct sunlight exactly dark enough to spawn mobs ... would make himself invincible to sunlight, too.
Now that is an interesting idea. It would help increase the fear factor brought on by endermen. They should act like an inverse torch block. (i.e subtracting light from the blocks around them or maybe the chunk they are in.)
On the main topic, it's good that notch acknowledged this, now we patiently wait to see if the 'nerfing' is strong enough.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
When no one was looking, the Endermen took forty blocks.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.
If you don't like mobs then play on peaceful, this
news sucks, the odd block missing here and there isn't anything to stress about.
So your solution is to forget minecraft and play on the graphically superior, free program Second Life. Got'cha. I'll be sure to let everyone know if they're even considering buying minecraft for it's unique blend of action and sandbox creativity to just skip it and get Second Life instead. Or! Terraria. :wink.gif:
I definitely think they should be able to teleport through walls, but only if they see you first (i.e., you can't run and hide to get away from them, but they just can't teleport and surprise you if you aren't aware of them being near.)
HALLELUIAH!!! No more floating trees! If this ability was actually dangerous to the player (similar to creeper explosions) I wouldn't mind, but currently it's just a nuisance! I really hope this is released in a 1.8.2 patch soon!
I hope this means he will change which blocks that they can take, not take out block taking completely.
If anything, I'd hope he implements something much more meaningful. So instead of picking up ANY blocks, they generate their own (possibly a new block that can only be found once they place it). They would then start building a structure out of it, without removing (or hopefully replacing) any other block. If they happen to despawn before the structure is complete, any others that spawn nearby the structure will, instead of making a new structure, continue building the old one.
Just a rusty idea which could implement a new block that can only be obtained from this ability.
It should be mentioned that most people would probably be perfectly happy if Endermen only moved blocks when angered and attacking the player.
But the other side of table is always in "love it or leave it" mode in favor of noise filtering, so it may get nerfed into non-existence because of all the drama rather than discussing the issue.
Well, discuss !

I think that would make him scary
The sad thing is, you're right.

There is no point to have a mob destroying slowly but surely the landscape without any kind of interraction from the player...
However, they should be more agressive, hit harder and have more hp, that would make them somewhat scary in my opinion.
Now...

It made a very nice window in the wall of our castle.
And left me a nice little pearl.
I kind of liked them being around, but then, in over 20 game days I only ever killed the one and saw another in the distance.
