I think that Notch should make mushrooms spread again, like it was in 1.7. Giant Mushrooms should just drop the blocks. Also, Mushroom stew doesn't stack, like noted before, so for 4 slots (Red shroom, brown shroom, workbench and bowl) you get 256 hunger points. Now compare to pork, the same 256 hunger for 1 stack. Stew should be boosted, or make mushrooms spread again.
By the way, does anyone know of any mod that would make mushrooms spread in 1.8?
What are you talking about? Mushrooms still spread. They just won't spread to infinity anymore, I believe. I've started a mushroom farm in 1.8 and it's coming along fine.
Of course you can still make shroom farms, but planting 1 shroom, putting 1 bonemeal on it and collecting a ton of tiny mushrooms from breaking all the Giant blocks is still like 20X more efficient than taking the time and work to build any normal underground shroom farm.
Thus the unbalanced aspect of it, compared to any other food crop.
I just keep imagining my cake room lined with red mushcap walls :biggrin.gif:
Cake rooms rule.
Now down to business:
-Giant mushrooms should use bonemeal in the same way as saplings; one use gives them the chance to grow, so it wont be instant 'shrooms all the time.
-Breaking all the stem blocks of giant 'shroom causes the top blocks to decay [like leaves], occasionally dropping 'shrooms. In a sense the same as tree farming.
(and can be collected with shears?)
-Infinite shroom spread needs to come back, but only on certain blocks/only in the nether
-If minecraft 'shrooms require dark, dry conditions- why do they appear in swamps?

As others have said, though, other foods are much easier to stack. Yea, empty bowls stack... but why would we be carrying all these empty bowls with us? Bonemeal on mushrooms does make it extremely easy, but I personally favor being able to automate it all, though I use bonemeal when I run low (until the mushroom spread bug is fixed, I'm keeping my mushroom farm small). After all, it's much easier to make vast wheat farms with automatic harvest than it is to spam mushrooms, even with bonemeal, once the wheat farm is big enough.
I would enjoy, though, the possibility to harvest mushroom blocks for decorative purposes as well.
Overall I'd like to see changes to make mushroom stew a non-pointless food and mushrooms in general more valuable.
Most importantly, mushroom stews should stack. Everything else does, even the wooden bowls stack. So it'd be decent as far as space goes because it'd take up 2 spots, 1 for stews and 1 for empty bowls. And would be consistent for wooden bowls since they'd stack both ways, full or not.
I'd also like milk to be gotten in wooden bowls (rather than metal buckets) and also stack. It would make cakes actually worth making since they wouldn't be such a huge pain to make. Having to run fill up 3 individual metal buckets is a pain to do for each cake, you could instead just spend time milking cows sometimes to build up a large supply of stackable milk in wooden bowls, and then just use those reserves when you actually make cakes. If it actually does cure poison, it would actually be feasible to carry a decent amount with you to cure yourself with it then.
Mushroom spread could be less nerfed than it was. Admittedly before it was insane spread, but now even a line of mushrooms won't spread if it's longer than 5, because apparently it won't spread if there's more than 5 mushrooms in the 9x9x3 area or some such. I'd rather see something like no spread if there's more than 9 in a 5x5x3 area, atleast then a line of 5 mushrooms in a 5x5x3 would still get spread (tho only 4 more so not impressive yields).
At present you can still make good mushroom farms, but they take up a lot of space.
I don't mind the bonemeal and harvest method, it's not very effective as far as I'm concerned (high cost and work requirement per harvest), so I see no need to nerf it. But it would be nice if you could use shears to gather the mushroom blocks to build with.

Still no infinite strongholds D:
In the same way an automated wheat farm generates food without you being there, that's exactly how the mushroom farms continue to work. If you want to spend all your time standing over mushrooms with bonemeal then knocking them down, that's kinda your problem... no one is forcing you to gather mushrooms and if you think you have too many why are you gathering them?!?
I personally can't stand farming with bonemeal for more than a few minutes, so I still use my traditional plant and ignore farming.

How many Musrooms on average you get recieve from clearing 1 GIANT Mushroom.
Removing the ability to use Bonemeal initially sounds like a reasonable way, but it also has drawbacks.
People that want to carry mushrooms and bonemeal while adventuring, won't be able to make quick temporary shelters either.
I still agree with some of the earlier mentions of removing crop mushrooms from being collected from digging out blocks.
Only allow Giant Mushrooms for block collection/Decoration, with no food drops is the simpler balance solution.
