One of the changes to how MC updates was a little dialog that asks if you want to update. I do like the changes so I clicked "Yes"
I like new content. I like new blocks. I like new mobs. I like prettier light. I like more interesting combat. I like not having to mouse wheel/hotkey over to food during a battle.

I've given thought to staying in a previous release of minecraft in past updates. I've asked myself if there would ever come a situation where I can't stand some new feature. 1.8 is one of the biggest changes to date. Adding fundamentally game changing mechanics.. among other things. So I finally had to answer the question since there was potentially something I would not prefer over the last release.
And I immediately had the thought that I would never be satisfied just letting myself stay behind. For better or worse, I want to play the game as it stands at the time. If something bad happens, I guess I'll just have to adapt. If the game ever gets so bad that I cannot enjoy myself, I'll just quit.
So far I'm still here.

You tell me that you've heard every sound there is
And your bird can swing
But you can't hear me
You can't hear me
