There are already discussion posts about this particular aspect of 1.8. I,however, felt a poll would be a more accurate way to gauge how people feel about one of the greatly argued aspect of version 1.8.
The void fog is a black impenetrable fog occurring at it's strongest just above bedrock and weakening as you go higher. No amount of lights of any kind will brighten a space at this level. It allows the player to only see a few blocks in front of themselves.

To be slightly more specific. It goes up 40 blocks from bedrock.
You can only see 24 blocks in front of you, no matter the lightning situation.
It would be far better if the toggle-able rendering fog would just darken to black as you went deeper, rather than spending more resources adding another fog layer on top of it. Simpler, and less resource intensive. It wouldn't need to be programmed to move an inch either.
I could even see this being recycled into the endermen when angered in exchange for their landscape termite behaviors, but that's a whole other discussion.

I like it, it adds to the overall game that minecraft is becoming, the rpg elements like leveling added via xp bar, then next patches levels and points to train for skills each level so you can strengthen char possible building faster/mine faster etc. it also adds to the mystique, from npc villagers that may or may not eventually give out quests to clear out dungeons with bosses that give special loot like the dungeon chests do already. the void fog adds that awesome level of creepiness when delving to such depths, you don't know what's around that corner, no matter how many torches you spam.
I could see eventually some cthulu-esque monster reaching up through the void fog to grab you while you battle it's tentacles from the fog :tongue.gif:
course I want minecraft to be more than "kids with legos" I want sandbox rpg which is what it's slowly becoming finally.
course sandbox rpg's have always been my favorite, from Eve online to second life...
It's cool... for about three seconds. I want to be able to see 10 blocks in front of me in my underground base. I voted to remove it but I could stand it being an option. I was actually just about to make this topic when I found this...

So I like the fog personally.
I don't mind that other people like the fog at all of course. That's why I voted it to be optional if it's kept. :smile.gif:
I would say there is a little danger with, say, separating this feature into adventure mode. If minecraft was to be split into two different genres, then it's niche market would be eliminated. It'd be two separate games that couldn't deliver when compared to other options. For adventure, you have Terraria. For creativity, you have Blender and Second Life.
Not that you're suggesting it should be limited to adventure mode, but I see this come up often and I think it's a big mistake as a solution. Optionality is always easier, especially for cosmetic features like this one. It also works for everyone. Adventure Map makers can choose to recommend this feature and utilize it to greater effect, or they can continue on as they have been. No creativity limited and all that jazz.
It just needs to be tweaked so that it is based on the overall number of air blocks nearby and decreased slightly, rather than being a fixed state. That way people can hollow out large areas at bedrock and have their visibility, and ravines will feel more daunting but it will still be dark and moody for small tunnels, caves, strongholds, and mines.
However, I do think there ought to be a way for players to combat its effects, should they wish to play the game differently from the "intended" path and build at bedrock. My preference would be for a fan or a "galestone" block (such as those that were originally planned for the Aether mod), which could act as a ventilator to disperse the fog within a certain radius of its placement.

It's stupid and should be removed. It blocks sunlight and ruins any type of underground base. I put lighting down there so that I can see, not so I can only see things immediately next to me. Optional at worst.
I think it's great. It adds a lot of spooky atmosphere down there. It's also great for adventure maps if you want to add something really creepy or something.
I think the obvious way of doing this would have been to make torches less effective. Have them provide the same level of illumination as they do now but have their light drop off quicker, and so decrease the illuminated space.
That way people mining would either have to tolerate a certain amount of dingyness or bring tons of torches, and builders could simply add more torches or use a more expensive but more illuminating torch to light their projects.
But this might have had problems with coal scarcity, and if a new more expensive, more illuminating light were added (such as a lantern, vertical glass block, torch, plank craft), then everyone might abandon torches altogether. It might also require a rewrite of the lighting system.

I feel this solution would satisfy all parties.
I like this idea here. I think the concept of a void fog deep down is awesome. I love the idea of things getting creepy as you get deep into the earth. However, I'd like to be able to control it when I want to. I have a 40x40 animal farm at bedrock left over from 1.73. It's now useless. This is at 12 blocks from the door:
Unless I'm wrong and the lighting affects of the fog don't affect spawning (ignoring the other changes to spawning by 1.8), that's a whole lot of hours of work put to waste. Especially since it's pitch black until I get there.
Your poll is lacking the option I would pick... It should be modified.
I don't think it needs to be made optional (unless that's the only thing the devs are willing to do), and I don't think it should be removed completely. But it can't stay the way it is, because it's awful in its current state.
I think it needs to be limited to BELOW the highest layer of bedrock. If it only did that as you get within a few blocks of the void, it would be fine.
This is the reason why I like optional and placed it into the poll. When I first started playing Minecraft I used to hear all kinds or sounds that we are now accustomed to and picture huge blocky lovecraftian beasts waiting for me to stumble across them while mining deep under ground. Huge masses of writhing tentacles, blobs that seep into crevices to devour you, slithering terrors oozing out of the darkest recesses of our worlds and at times pulling back their massive bodies and opening their maw to utter ungodly and lamentful bellows that shake the foundations of even the largest of our structures. Gigantic monstrosities swimming through the deepest waters. At points where the sun does not reach and only our meager flickering torches light the way.
