I'm trying to figure this out. Now, I for one do a lot of farming, so I'm not particularly upset that no spot of grass might result in a romping sheep trampling everything. I am however concerned that I am permanently depleting the supply of animals in my world (I tend to be a little... violent, lets say.)
Has anyone found conditions (in 1.8 proper, not the pre-releases) in which they can get new animals to spawn in existing chunks? Pigs are a lot less useful now if they don't respawn, of course, since pork is the only resource and you must kill them to gather it.
Some solutions I've been told are
1. Farm chickens for now - use eggs to make new chickens
2. Trap a single (or pair or trio) of cows and milk them
However, I'm not totally convinced that they don't respawn, since I have heard some folks claim they saw a new animal spawn, or that old animals up and disappeared for no reason.

I'm 90% sure that I've seen animals respawning in the 1.8 official version, so I'm not sure where this idea is even coming from. Then again, I wasn't paying super close attention since I never thought about them not respawning so I could be mistaken.
I think this update should have been put in when Mojang had finished the animal husbandry code and put it in, I.E. delaying adding this in until it was finished.
They didn't though, so we're all screwed till 1.9.
Just need to farm, then when 1.9 comes out go out and find some animals, herd or tame them, and start breeding them again.

Then again he never said anywhere in patch notes or ANYTHING that they took out respawning.
Well, that's the thing, Toric: I'm not convinced that they don't respawn. It is clear that the biome is affecting their spawning a lot more, for sure, and that they really are permanent (or highly persistent anyway.)
What I'm trying to figure out is what mechanic, if any, exists for them to respawn? For instance, Cows don't spawn in the scrubland/hinterland (usually mountainous) biome. So my thought is that even you somehow herded a bunch of cows there and penned them they wouldn't spawn new cows. Also, I noticed that my home, which is on a moderately sized mountain, does not have animals spawning on it. However, there are some animals nearby trapped on the slopes, so they may meet some 'animal quota' for the area; with them and the others around there may be too many animals nearby for any more to spawn. That's possible as well.
As of 1.8 there is no breading of animals, thus no way (aside throwing chicken eggs) to regain new animals. So they have not fully added in the code to keep animals from respawning.
So yes, THEY DO RESPAWN. Just at a slower rate.
Otherwise in 1.8, with no breading until 1.9, we'd quickly run out of animals and be forced to make farms for bread to survive the long run.

I'm about 98% positive mobs do respawn, albeit extremely slowly. I penned in an area and pushed a few animals into it (including a chicken coop) and one day an extra pig appeared in the largest fenced in area. I suppose he could have wandered from somewhere else, but since it's on the border of an ocean and desert biome (on the tip of a huge archipelago with cactus fences throughout), and he would have needed to make it to my house, jump onto a chest, run along about 8 fence bricks without falling off, and deposit himself on the pen, I think it was just a respawn. There have also been the occasional pig or chicken that I've discovered deep in my tunnels, from God knows where. I have no grass blocks that lead to my tunnel network.
Animals would not be made persistent and non spawning unless the support system of breeding was implemented, otherwise that's would just be bad game design.
I think the spawn rates are just lowered. I'll know more if my swamp runs out of critters

Yet there has been plenty of tests and posts pointing to the fact that his is happening. Notch stated this was intended for the future of Minecraft.
Then Notch either makes poor patch notes, or they didn't take out respawning. Altered it maybe, but didn't remove it.
Honestly, there is no way a sheep wandered into a completely closed off area. Just like after I killed off about 50 animals in a huge area, a whole heard of pigs and cows suddenly wanders into that same big open area literally the second minecraft day. This is considering they would have had to cross an ocean mind you.
BTW could you guys give me some post approvals so i can get rid of this post limit?

Leave it to Mojang to add unfinished features.
Blocking doesn't work or do anything.
Experience is pointless
Abandoned mines are alright, but still pointless with no real unique things other than one new mob
Strongholds are giant pre-built fortresses with just about nothing in them.

You get post approvals by posting, it's not the +1 thing. You just need to make ten posts.
I think it is completely possible for animals to wander into a closed off area, as I've seen it happen plenty of times in minecraft.
I thought your argument was "it wasn't in the patch notes" but now you're saying he probably altered it? Well it wasn't in the patch notes....

So for now, don't worry about it.
It's as simple as that, WHY are people still wondering about this? Decompile the code, there is NOTHING THERE to tell animals to not respawn FOR THAT REASON.
Deno: So do you think if you're in a good biome for animal spawning, say a swamp, and no animals are spawning, it's because there are too many present?

Because I slaughtered all the animals near my home base (in a swamp) and animals are no longer spawning. I had to go a chunk away and literally push a few animals through a tunnel to get some animals near me (I'm hoping they breed in 1.9). I've played the 1.8 world for days and days and days and days and animals are not spawning.
Yeah, what do they think this is, a beta or something?
Beta is a moniker for "don't complain, it's not finished yet and you haven't paid for it"
Too bad I did pay for it, and the contract is buying the game "as is," but since I bought the game in Alpha, the game isn't how I bought it anymore.
But go on using that excuse. "it's a beta"
I've plated betas that have functioned better before. Adding content that does nothing isn't covered by "its a beta" excuse, just FYI. Betas are for testing, adding content that does nothing is just breaking the game for people who've paid for it already.

They still respawn. I saw it happen with a sheep.

Nope, a sheep appeared in my chicken pen. Can't see any way he could have jumped in given that there's a fence and no blocks high enough nearby.
