So, everyone kept saying animals didnt respawn in 1.8, but thats not really true. They still respawn, just slowly. Just the other day I had a sheep spawn in my new 1.8 map, inside of a big brick walled off area. I think they are just limited on how many can exist in any given area.
I've recently inhabited an "NPC Village" lately too and every morning there are tons of animals, particularly cows, all over the place. I think it may partially depend on the biome and since I'm in a grassland biome, animals are probably spawning a lot more than other places.

Yeah no way they dont respawn, I killed everything for miles, and I still had animals roaming around in a couple of days. Slowly, but they still showed up eventually.
It's really hard to say. I still haven't noticed animals respawning or despawning ever, but others have. From what I can tell, when you skill an animal, it opens up a "slot" for a new animal to spawn. Or maybe there's just a minimum number of animals that exist per biome, and they don't start respawning until after you kill enough that the total count gets below that limit.
Can we all agree that animals no longer despawn, at least?
They don't respawn. They roam into your area from other areas you haven't gone and killed yet
So I guess this empty feild I was looking at that was void of life one moment then had a herd of cows 'pop' in counts as them 'wondering in' uh huh...
You know, sense 1.9 will will add breading to make more animals for food, they may not have fully implemented the 'no respawn' into 1.8, so we can still gain meats. Otherwise we'd quickly be forced to set up farms for bread to survive in the long run.
Wrong, and right. You're wrong that they respawn, but in the same context you're right. Instead of just respawning after one or two is killed, they will only respawn if there's 2 left, and only 2 left, in a certain spawning area/chunk space. You might've killed everything in a certain area, but since they're persistent, you'll often get one or two trapped in a cave or somewhere else. I've even seen a sheep at bedrock level.

I've also had a pair of chickens and a pig spawn inside my structures after creating a new 1.8 map when it was official. Prior to that, several in game days of time had passed, I had collected all the wild game for hundreds of meters and put them into my dungeon/farm.
I had a wall and fence surrounding the area the new creatures appeared in. As well as a noted count of how many animals were in the dungeon (none had escaped). They were definitely newly spawned.

This is exactly what I suspect is happening. I have cleared out every critter for miles around my 1.8 world (That I made *after* the 1.8 release) and I have only seen one or two sheep stroll casually in from bum**** egypt. I have not seen a re-spawn in the past minecraft month.

Life is not measured in the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
This is interesting, because there may be a way to deplete an area of animals, thus allowing you to have grass without concern of getting animals romping all over your stuff. On the other hand, it would be nice to have a clearer idea of how it works, as to have more control of the phenomenon. Right now it's kind of 'magic'.

Agree with this... but do not discount the other evidence. The only way this is going to be "proven" is if someone does an experiment and uploads a video of the results, to be honest...
Here's the best idea: find an area free of caves, flat, with a good supply of animals. Pen off a pair of each kind and kill everything else. See if they respawn.

I just may set up an experiment like this using MC edit to remove the caves after I find a location that has lots of animals. Or just do it in Creative mode using a transperent texture pack to locate the caves, but with MC edit I could isolate a whole chunk and build a wall around it.

They do respawn, no way he could have roamed into a completely blocked off area..
Second its never EVER been stated, anywhere that they dont respawn. So I'm inclined to believe they still spawn.

Only thing I notice is that my farms keep getting ran over by stupid chickens :angry.gif:
