TL:DR? Here's the short version.
New, bigger biomes? Woo! :biggrin.gif:
Lakes and Rivers? Woo! :biggrin.gif:
Hunger? Yay :smile.gif:
3 new mobs? Yay (I think) :smile.gif:
Mines, Strongholds and "NPC" villages without NPC's? Erm... Okay? :blink.gif:
Creative mode? Good news for those who got bored of classic? :unsure.gif:
Animated Chests? YAY! :biggrin.gif:
...But they're tiny? WTF?! :angry.gif:
So anyway...
Like many, I was a bit hyped for 1.8
A lot it has added I was actually quite happy to see arrive.
Once the leak came out we got a "sneak peek" into it... Even if it was done on purpose.
Let me start with what I do like, the new and bigger biomes has been much needed for Minecraft. Very happy to see this to wander around and build whatever. The vines in swamps were a nice touch too. Even if they do devour a tree if left a while :tongue.gif:
I like the lakes and rivers, we've been begging for this for over a year now. It's a great concept to be able to ride a boat down a river, enjoying the scenary.
Here's where it started to get a bit... rocky.
Everyone was excited about the silverfish. Hell yes! A lovely little trick to make some people believe its a fish, when it's not... They're little rat like things that pop out of stone blocks...
And Mojang got lazy with the sounds for them too. Skeleton sounds? Really?
Endermen also got everyones eye. A scarier mob to challenge the creepers reign of terror on us? Count me in! I found them fun to tease and to kill. Luring them into water was fun. But when you try fighting them normally... It seems just impossible. They always teleport behind you and if you're thinking of going into a wall to stop them, don't... they will go above you and attack you. Mojang also got lazy with the sounds here too. Zombie sounds? Why?
Don't get me started on the cave spiders... They're like a cheap ripoff. A simple blue retexture (why blue?) Same model just small enough to go through a 1x1 hole. Can also crawl through webs. That's all fine and dandy... But what if you're trying to hit them? Instead of hitting the enemy (who can hit you) you hit the web instead? Nice one Mojang. A lazy creation and a bug to stop us hitting them but they can hit us.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not mad about the mobs, just felt a little let down. But I was happy there was more variety. (Not like we need it due to mods anyway...)
The mines, strongholds and NPC Villages are... Different. One thing I don't like straight up is the NPC villages. Surely they could have waited to implement them into the public version instead of giving us ghost towns? They aren't really NPC villages, just villages. No NPC's... Nothing.
I do like the idea of strongholds though. I always felt the dungeons weren't challenging enough. Strongholds are a perfect addition to the dungeons. A great structure to dominate, which is dangerous too!
I feel that the mines are far too numerous, every cave I seemed to enter in all my worlds ran straight into a mine. So now I feel like the original feel and concept everyone had of Minecraft has been destroyed. Instead of appearing onto a world, all alone. A whole world untouched by anyone and everything is free for the taking. Now we have maps covered in mines, villages and the odd stronghold. On some worlds they're so numerous it's hard to find some land to actually call home without feeling like someone has beat me to it.
I'm on the bench about Creative mode. Sure it's great and everything but was it really needed?
Modding has become a huge part of the community. If we wanted to build amazing structures we would use various mods to make it like that. If you specifically wanted to play creative, you had classic minecraft.
I was expecting a classic mode to appear in minecraft eventually though. Like many we all wanted a classic where we can build whatever we want, when we want, how we want, with what we want.
However classic mode is very incomplete. They could have at least finished creating it before releasing it to the public.
It is missing many, many blocks from the list still. Grabbing blocks and putting into your inventory can be annoying at times. Not as easy as just opening a menu and clicking on the blocks like in Classic minecraft.
But I'm not mad about its existence, just feel it needed more testing. It feels like a poorly modded survival mode. Mods can, and actually do a better job for the most part.
The one thing that's really ticked me off about 1.8 though is the animated chests. I was very happy to have them in the game. Something that could add much immersion to the game. Makes it look much better.
But why for the love of minecraftia are they so damn tiny?!
Surely they could be like every other block and be the right size?! Surely?
As a texture artist I also want to know why they aren't using the textures in the terrain.png and some terribly uvmapped chest image that is a right pain to retexture.
Hopefully the size will be changed in a later update, either that or someone makes a mod to change them back. I'd rather have an unanimated chest block that is the right size than some opening tiny block thing with a snout.
Yeah... What the hell is with the snout? Get rid of it.
Am I being too close minded? Moody?
I dunno. I just expected better I guess.
Don't get me wrong, I love minecraft.
But I'll be sticking with 1.7.3 for now, to play on the lovely servers who think like I.
Re: silverfish
if you had bothered to look up what they are, you wouldn't have been shocked.
They're little asshole parasites, not fish. I've got them in my room. |:
As for Endermen... Idk, I like them.
I do think the green eyes were scarier than the pink, a and that they need their own noises, but eh. Even without those changes they're creepy.
I love that they get hurt by water. Makes me wanna make a house with a moat. =D
I seriously hope this thread is a troll because someone really shouldn't be this stupid.
Look at the chest when it's open. The width of the lid makes the chest reach a blocks limit. Now, I'm no coder, but I'm sure it's way easier to make the chest smaller so it fits into the 1x1x1 block parameter of the game than designing a special block type that is 1x1x1.12 or something.
If they delayed the villages and strongholds to be populated, people would whine about villages and strongholds being not implemented in 1.8.
Clearly you didn't understand.
Let me put it in simpler terms.
They... could... have... stuck... with...the...delay...of... 1.8
People can whine all they like about the delay, I'd rather have a complete patch than a buggy unfinished one.
But no, they had to "leak" it.
If they delayed the villages and strongholds to be populated, people would whine about villages and strongholds being not implemented in 1.8.
Naturally. You can't please everyone.
I too, am annoyed a bit.
Of course, I'm fine with the chest animations and so on, but I can't stand that this update was a shell of a real update. What Mojang should have done is released the "whole" features, like the hunger system, sprinting, blocking, bow-charging, etc
and then left strongholds and villages out. Possibly persistent mobs, too. They should have released these features in 1.9, but completed, with NPCs, bosses, etc.
The Endermen and Silverfish are NOT DONE. That is evidenced by the fact that they do have skeleton and zombie sounds.
I don't imagine it is very easy to make new sounds right away. And do you know what the heck an Enderman or a Silverfish would even sound like?
And the fact that you call them lazy is laughable. You are playing a beta of a game. Things are being implemented and aren't quite done yet.
That game is not goddamn done!
Are you being too close minded or moody? No. You are being an idiotic ass.
You like all the important additions, so I don't get why you would complain about the small things?
Fish can still be caught as normal.
Endermen don't need to be attacked.
Those noises are placeholders.
NPCs will be added later on.
The mineshaft generation rate was DECREASED.
Only four blocks are missing from Creative.
The chests are smaller BECAUSE they're animated.
Personally I love all the changes in 1.8! If I were to have one complaint it would be that that single player feels even lonelier with the deserted villages. I think they should have held off including villages until NPC's were ready, but it's certainly not a deal-breaker by any means.
Overall I would rate the update a 10. :smile.gif:
The locks expanded the size of the chest past the size of a single block. So, to make the chest fit into the block, the chests were shrunk. Otherwise we'd have a block too wide, and we'd be getting stuck on it all the time.

No big deal at all, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
SILVERFISH:
Wiki or Google it kid . . . wait . . . here you go.
Also, villages are fairly rare . . . not sure how you are bumping into them. Mineshafts are amazing as I've never really liked getting lost in caverns, getting lost in a mineshaft is something completely different. And although I've never found a Stronghold, I know they are freaking awesome.

There needs to be one thread where everyone can complain about 1.8. One thread. Not 50 new ones. The constant whining and complaining is just getting old. It won't change anything. Either find a complain thread that already exists, or make a blog, whine there so it makes you feel better, and move on with your life. Honestly.
Clearly you didn't understand.

With all do reason that this is a beta, albeit somewhat treated like a final build, by fans and possibly creators, it is not. We are in a very tricky situation, but honestly if you like Minecraft, you will probably like other games, so I mean just play something else if 1.8 unsatisfies you. Kid? What are you? Ignorant?
I never knew kids had deep voices, bills to pay, a job, pregnant fiancée and a house of my own...
Well to each their own mate.
Well I'm sorry that I never cared to look up the word "silverfish" and what it is.
I assumed that it will be a generic silver fish. As expected from people who make generic things like "Sheep", "Cow", "Pig" etc. They don't tell you what specific type of sheep, cow or pig it is do they?
Never dealt with them in my life, no one I know has mentioned them and schooling doesn't put a priority on teaching people about silverfish. But I'll be sure to drop by my little sisters school and tell them about it.
notch is perfect he never does anything wrong or badly, all those bugs are on purpose you idiots, it's a beta, that way notch has something to do at work, you know, because he's a god and already has minecraft finished, he just want's to drag it out because it's fun.
no one here wants to hear any complaints, the game is always perfect, so stfu!

The point is that it's not Mojang's fault that you didn't know what a certain existing bug was.
I love how people say "WHAT THE HELL MOJANG" When it's only Notch and Jeb who work on Minecraft not the whole company.
They are part of the company.
You're part of the problem.
When people say "What the hell notch" they say it's not just notch, he has a company you know.
When people say "What the hell jeb" they say it's notch and the rest of his company too.
Instead I chose to put a title that grabbed peoples attention, clearly it worked.
And by the way. Your ignorance clearly shows when it's not actually just Notch and Jeb. Sure they're the main coders. But you're forgetting everyone else who helps out too. People who do the texture work, make the sounds etc.
I think it is a bit weird how they suddenly went from basic general names of animals and then suddenly went into naming specific breeds and things. Silverfish is also actually a type of fish, AND would have probably made more sense as a fish if they were being a bit more consistent, so it is not really his fault that he expected it.
That's the exact point I was trying to make, thanks :smile.gif:
