Admit it, we all saw 1.8 as the god among updates, the one that was going to make this game tons of fun with lots more adventure, killing, and exploring. While it is pretty amazing and has breathed new life into the game for me, there are lots of things that shouldn't have been changed and don't have an option of some sort to change it back.
So, here is my brief list of things that should have options/removed. I will add to it if anyone posts and just keep making a larger list.
The shorter render distance underground
The view turning
Hunger bar
Lag
No snow
Out of memory errors
Ender-griffers
I will try to check this thread regularly and try to update is as much as I can. So please, post yours!
EDIT: Please do not post things like "your wrawng trololo" because I'd like this to be an open-ended discussion. Not someone yelling at some troll.
Everything that you said you hated makes the game more realistic... You can't live without food... underground it can be pretty foggy/dusty, and the view turning is awesome... very realistic. The only thing I dislike is the Purple Enderman eyes... should be red.
In my opinion, neither of the features ruined anything for me, but the performance issues this version has, not just lag but other things like bugs. I think known to be buggy versions should be labelled as "Test" before official releases.. though, straying from that topic; I compared 1.8 ( official ) to 1.5, and 1.8 has some lag spikes going on whilst 1.5 seems to be fine. You can easily see the difference by the lagometer when running either.
I think known to be buggy versions should be labelled as "Test" before official releases.
Or at least they should be called "beta" versions.
On topic, though, any changes made that destroy/invalidate what you have built before are going to happen because this is a beta version of the game. All changes should only be looked at in terms of how they affect a new game created in that version. The void fog change at the lowest levels obviously sucks for people who built huge complexes there, but when you're exploring in a new world, it is a pretty interesting change. It adds pressure when you're deep (I've been surprised by creepers because of the fog several times), and it lets you know you're getting near the bottom before actually hitting bedrock. There could also be forward looking reasons for it; for example, there may be plans to add another layer where bedrock currently is, and the fog adds to the ambiance. There have been lots of changes made as a proof of concept that didn't seem to have much of a point at time of creation (looking at you, nether) but turned out to be integral to future additions.
I'll admit the hunger bar doesn't really fall into the above category. Conceptually, it makes the idea of a home of some sort much more important so you have a renewable source of food, and makes homesteading a much higher priority. In combat, it doesn't change a whole lot since you really, really shouldn't be taking that much damage except in the case of dungeons (like skeleton archer dungeons *shudder*), but that adds significantly to the challenge of those places. What the hunger bar removes is the constant health/food depletion from minor fall damage, scrapes, etc. There are still some problems with the system, like an early game food accessibility in some biomes, a need for poison antidote, and a want for some kind of health potion in case of emergency, but those aren't really systemic problems, just implementation ones...and the latter is no big deal in a beta. Especially since peaceful toggles hunger depletion for people who prefer to build than farm.
While this hasn't ruined the game for me it is one of a very few things I find annoying. I don't mind the hunger bar; however, the lack of spawning animals is killing me.
Okay, I see your point here. The hunger serves for more realism and adds some challenge, not to mention tosses healing for a loop, so I guess an option would be nice. But hey, at least food is stackable now!
IMO, I find these very nice additions because they add challenge or effect, which is always nice. I like a tough game. :smile.gif:

I wouldn't say it's killing me, and I've actually been enjoying fishing from the roof of my arrow factory, but it does make the world get really empty, really fast, at least around my base. I miss the little piggies!!
The hunger bar is actually way easier to manage, with less food, than before, though. All you have to do is keep a stack of cooked fish and nibble on one when your hunger bar drops. Immortality awaits... lol

That's what I like most about it: one slot of food can keep me topped off on health for 4-5 hauls out of my mineshaft, and it mitigates all the small amounts of damage you take (random skeleton arrows, 1 heart of falling damage, etc) that would have built up before.
The only thing I don't like is the underground fog. And to anyone who mentioned things being made more realistic: when I want realism, I turn off the game and go outside.
The thing that bugged me was the lag.
Before 1.8 I played on Normal draw distance, because Far was too laggy for me. It was nice, I could still move around without feeling trapped in a bubble.
Now Normal is as laggy as Far used to be, trapping me in the little white bubble of the Short draw distance. ):
Though really, other than that I have no problems. If that was fixed, I'd be perfectly content with 1.8. <3

I even like persistent animals, even though we can't breed them yet.
The fact that there remain MANY empty promises. Let's get some organizational skills and a decent team manager / project coordinator.

Small complaint, but I guess it could be annoying. Not too much though, as you usually aren't seeing too far underground anyway...
What? Oh, the tool/block moving as you turn?
Admit it. That's awesome.

Same here. Really killed the "Yay, 1.8!!" for me.
