My first survival mode encounter with an enderman was while I was fighting off a couple skeletons. I saw his glowing green eyes, and knew he was lurking in the shadows, watching me--mocking me--the whole time! I was afraid even to look in that general direction for fear I would make "eye contact", and almost died because of it!
That morning, even though I KNEW he was gone (they burn in the daylight. And in water, for that matter!!) I was still a little shaken, and nervous to go into the woods.
Evil boogeymen, lurking in the shadows. Freakin' creepy. Great job, Mojang!
My first time I was expecting a challenge, and honestly, I find them to be a lot more tame than thought from the info given prior to a 1.8 pre-release.
My first encounter with an endermen was down in one of those abandoned mineshafts.
I had spent around 20-30 minutes already in there and experienced new cave spiders (more worrisome and scary i believe then enders), creepers almost blowing up in my face, being shot in the back by a skeleton where i least expect it. The tipping point was when in the far side of a dark pathway, i could eerily see the arms and legs of an enderman. By that stage i'd had more than enough of the thrill and tried to find my way out whilst looking down at the ground like a grovelling peasant.
It was really quite enjoyable, Mojang did a fantastic job on them and the mineshafts. Endermen really do give you the creeps. The only thing i wish was that they were abit stronger on the health side, and weren't so vunerable to natural forces.
