I used the seed: 1.8 goodness
I have similar results, although at around z:18,000 y:(somewhere in the double digits) I found a large land mass (took around 3-5 min to sail the coast) with amazing cliffs.... I kept going... I'm at z:21,+ and have not found much in the way of sizable land masses.
When I get a bit further in I'll generate a map... if they have the Mac tools updated.
[edit] the map tools are up and running... attempting to save now. I may have estimated the "large landmass" location. The far right of the map will be my current location.
It seems I started on an actual continent or at least a very large landmass but did not realize it's extent before taking my traditional boat tour of a new world.

Don't fear the creeper, yeah he's in your mine
Don't fear the creeper, happens all the time, don't fear the creeper
Try building Alantis on those small 1.7 watering holes. Oh wait, you can't. Most you can do is build your tiny little home above a puddle and hope for the best.
I love maps like this, but have you seen any animals yet? i havn't seen any at all, only seen hostile mobs.
About to upload an image... on the larger cluster of islands at around 1/3 from right I found cows. About 2/3 of the way in you will see another decent little island with some exposed lava. On this one I saw a chicken.... that's it so far.
I ran into two Endermen... standard hostiles and miles and miles of squid.
[edit] Map may take a bit to upload... when first posted I had just started upload... now about 45% done

I am actually in agreement. Although most of the islands were bare of trees which makes things interesting.

Anyone have a solution to animals not spawning on islands though?
Small succor to be had in that regard, but there is a spider dungeon underneath the spawn island, roughly West x Northwest of the center of the island and not too deep. So you can get what you need for a fishing rod and farm the spiders for components to make wool.
BAM. Just look at that giant island. That is sexy is what that is.
(This is from the OP's seed.)
I love this topic and seed!
Can already imagine playing survival island... in Tvaes discovered EAST island , or maybe in that archipelago i can see in Valdark's image, WEST from spawn point, but EAST of the supposed continent.
Do you know the coordinates of this island cluster?
PS: compasses would never be so useful as in this map.
North and West seem well documented for now, so I took a little sailing trip to the South, where I found a significant landmass at about 6km with lots of animals to eat. Didn't see any villages there though.

Heading South Overhead
I followed your same path and found a village further south (of spawn). It's a pretty healthy chunk of land, kept generating as I explored it so I assume it goes on for quite awhile. It started generating a lot of tall mountains:
Pretty awesome map for survival imo. Thanks for the heads up OP.

I went back after you pointed that out. I must have walked right past it because the outermost plot of wheat was on my map. Turns out it's coastal, so I sailed around and came at it from the South, and it was pretty sweet. Also let me gather some eggs to bring back and make a go of setting up a chicken farm.
I sailed some rivers and opened my map up a bit more while I was down there and found another village a little further down that sits on the edge of a dessert biome. This one had a forge and was pretty sweet, although with some obtuse door placement.
passive mobs wont spawn in ocean biomes, meaning that even if you do create a safe haeven above or under ground, you are screwed out of quite a few resources, including a dependable amount of food.
and B, oceans replaced the farlands, i want the farlands, i enjoyed my time there, and making them my home.
I'm hoping i find one of these huge oceans in my 1.8 world, Then I could build some village on the islands, some ship ports, make one Island into a volcano...
ahh, the things you can do with endless water, a couple of oceans, and a inmagination!
On top of that, the farther you go out, the more water there is, giving us less space to work with. Why didn't they just bring Minecraft back to the indev phase?
As long as Minecraft is like that, I will stick with beta 1.7.3.
You will not be missed, have fun in 1.7.3.
OT: I like the island maps. As long as you don't start on a desert island you can get a boat built and go exploring other islands. It makes finding your cave entrances again REALLY easy...start at house, go easy, first island is your tree farm, the next is your epic cave entrence, the third is an NPC village.

Looks like valdark's map is not from the OP's seed. I can't find the spawn island in his image

However the only thing I found was Kevin Costner, and he kept yelling, "Hey, air boy! Check it out! I've got gills!"
Very rude, I thought.
