Alright so mobs aren't despawning, which means there have been wool-less sheep wandering around our maps for (real) days. Is the wool supposed to grow back or what?

Not in 1.8, nope. Possibly 1.9 this may be a feature.
Animal despawn is either bugged, or the persistent spawn code was partially put in and not taken out when breeding was yanked.

Well if its wool you need you can always use string from spiders to make some wool it only takes 14 string to make 3 wool for a bed :smile.gif:

ha ha. that's true. for some reason I always forget I can make wool with string. I was hoping that there were plans for the regrowth of wool. then we could fence in a whole bunch of sheep and harvest them every few days.
For me this issue with animal spawning is the biggest (and really only "real" problem) with the 1.8 update.
I get that they want us to adventure, but basically if you want to have a fixed base for whatever reason (even if just to mine) you will have to rely now on chickens, fish and wheat instead of pigs or cows, since you'll quickly kill off the latter and they will never respawn.
For me, the porkchop is emblematic of Minecraft - there's a "I Porkchop Minecraft" shirt after all - and this change, with the failure to include the breeding code or some way for the animals to respawn, is lame. It actually makes it significantly harder to prepare yourself for a big nomadic adventure - ironically the exact opposite of what we presume Notch & Co. were attempting to accomplish with these brute force changes to encourage adventuring.
Has this been confirmed? My biggest hang up with moving to 1.8 is that I do have a main base with a friendly mob spawning/disposal system... So, if I understand this correctly, once I use my EMP's to deal with my mobs, they won't respawn now? As I asked, is this confirmed?
