I don't see how an Enderman could overcome a simple moat ... So I actually don't care if his ability to move blocks is removed or not.
Actually that's not hard... he could throw blocks into your moat, creating a bridge or cutting off any water flows. Or he could remove blocks and change the flow of active water.
Plus a moat won't stop him from turning the environment outside your moat into a completely ugly mess of moved blocks. Your little house might be safe, but your world won't be.
Am I right that his movements and block placing is completely random ? In that case I still don't see a big problem. It's slightly to mildly annoying, but nothing more.
For all the people complaining about how Notch took "so long" to acknowledge this:
Try getting a Blizzard, Microsoft or EA Dev to respond to player complaints within a week of releasing a large update.
I agree with this... exept for Bohemia Interactive, they have the most friendly politics towards their community in all of gaming as far as my experience goess. Mojang scores rather high on that list as well, wich this proves.

Why keep something that only annoys and has zero benefit?
Wow . . . I'm a die-hard cynic and I did not expect this kind of response from Notch over the issue. I'm very glad to see that Notch is listening to the community and at least acknowledging the displeasure with Endermen.
An alternate power that would be easy to code would be that if the endermen could place a nightmare block. What it would do is that they would randomly place it and it would lower the lighte levels around it, allowing other mobs to spawn. This would add a concept to destroy it with an ender peral or ender tool, simultaneously adding a practical use for ender perals and solving the destroyed buildings.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Hey, you there. Yeah, you. If this post helped you, why dont you give it a +1?
I won't lie. I went like, 10-30 today in starcraft 2. Logging on minecraft forums to see this day pulled me out of my sad slump.
For all the people complaining about how Notch took "so long" to acknowledge this:
Try getting a Blizzard, Microsoft or EA Dev to respond to player complaints within a week of releasing a large update.
Isn't Mojang like, 6-7 people? Blizzard pays people to interact/watch the community exclusively. Blizzard also has an incentive to do things that don't make more money, which is generally ignore 90% of criticism whether its good or bad for the game.
Aside from not supporting RPG gamestyles minecraft doesn't support anything yet. The basics are building or plowing away at enemies for no reason except entertaining oneself...Minecraft is basically still a sandbox game without a goal...
But since minecraft has this wonderfull thing where you can decide what to do with harvested blocks people have come up with entertaining stuff to do including fort building, making mob grinders or terraforming the world,so it still is fun after a few weeks instead of hunting down the 1 millionth repetitive mob.
p.s. the way I look at minecraft is as a huge world editor, hence the rpg-mapping :smile.gif:
Yep. People need to wrap their brains around the fact that the more direction given to Minecraft, the less of a sandbox it will be.
Creative mode: pure sandbox
Survival mode: sandbox with a few RPG elements
Many people have taken to Survival over Creative with a focus on building because they find more satisfying in having to work for your blocks a little bit. Realistically, this is the style of gameplay that brought the most people to the game. Survival is still very much a sandbox game, however--you can fight if you want to, build if you want to, and you're not pushed in any specific direction by game mechanics.
But the more RPG elements they force on Survival mode (eating, advancing weapon mechanics, etc.) the less of a sandbox it will be and the more people will feel pressured to fight instead of build.
If Notch wants to continue evolving Minecraft into an RPG, that's fine., but like he did with Creative, he should peel off Survival into its own mode with the pre-1.8 mechanics. Then he can move the game into Adventure mode development, adding more and more RPG elements.

Not really. If the RPG elements and hunger don't limit what the player can do, it's just more stuff to do. I admit Terraria got boring once I found all the nice and shiny weapons, but I attribute that to how much more creative you can be when building in Minecraft, and the much more versatile the mechanics are. Still, Terraria was ****ing fun.
I'm not really comparing the two, but it's obvious Notch is taking notes. I don't think it's a bad thing, as long as nothing ruins what we've had for years.

The road to hell is paved in good intentions. By all accounts, the increased focus on weapon mechanics, abandoned mines, fotresses, hunger, etc., all point to a refocusing on moving around the world, fighting to survive--rather than sitting in one place building.
Each step on that road seems innocent enough when viewed alone, but look back after a while and you'll discover things have really changed; it's just done in such subtle increments that it goes largely unnoticed.
So far I'm not even liking this one step. I don't want to have to think about food, and I liked the prior bow mechanics more than this "charging" stuff. This isn't TF2, and it does a shoddy job of mimicing that mechanic.
The only thing us builders got in this last update were a couple new stone blocks, and the only reason we got that is because they needed them for the new fortresses.
I am an admin on two MC servers.(can I has cookie?) On each of these servers I have built with assistance, two mob grinders. Both are from bedrock to ceiling high. (25 spawn floors + 1 killing floor.) They are the classic square layout, with a drop shaft on each corner. One machine actually has a north and south wing on it for more spawn area.
No one would go near them in order to keep the Endermen away. So, I decided to see what would happen when I showed up there. Well, within 5 minutes of my arrival, all of my drop shafts, which are normally dry, were flooded. This pretty much shut the machine down. So, I climbed to the roof, broke through it and started to torch out each floor as I descended. I ran into a total of about 10 of the Endermen on the way down. They had grabbed blocks from the walls, ceilings and floors in a lot of levels.
Once the place was lit up, I (with help) simply changed the design of the spawn floors from 3-high to 2-high in all areas possible. (A LOT of blocks) we managed to get 5 floors done on the first night, the rest we did at our leisure.
I actually had a fun time doing it. I saw a problem, and solved it. At least until the next problem anyway.
Life is maintenance.
Same thing happened to mine, except I'm alone, and wouldn't have had much fun digging up 600 plus blocks and placing them for an ability that will most likely get done away with in the near future (unless Mojang really insists on the idea of disappearing landmass). Instead of that, I just installed the mod, which will also protect the landscape (and which is my main concern now).

They're only in increments because Notch decided to leave the adventure update largely incomplete. For all you know the next major patch (not 1.9) could be targeted at builders. The last few patches have provided amazing new blocks for building. Pistons, repeaters, dispensers, etc...
Also, what about the bow forces you to play adventure mode within survival? The old bow could fire at massive rates. It wasn't even useful since mobs could only be hit by arrows so many times per second, they'd just bounce off. Now they're more functional. Also, there are 500 games that use that bow mechanic, I doubt Notch was looking to import TF2 features into Minecraft.
Since you enjoy maintenance duty, I would like to start a service where you fill in all the holes in buildings and fix up the landscape for users who send their maps to you. Please let me know when you would like to start.
The update is worth it for many, many reasons, but do use the mod. It's not hard to install at all, even if you've never done it, which was my case. I gave the details in the first post. Just use the mod until Mojang come to their senses.
I would like to ask what LEGITIMATE positives are present for the Endermen's ability to move blocks. I've been skimming through this topic and I have yet to see one acceptable benefit of having them move blocks. "Acceptable" in this case refers to that which cannot be refuted by common sense. I'm just confused as to why there are people herding to an unknown or unexplained cause when there is far too much evidence weighed against said cause.
I've asked that often, and no one can bring anything up. The only plus this ability brings is the following:
- it annoys people who have built things
And that is all the pro-block-removing group has in store. That, and the lame "I like to do maintenance" argument. If you like doing maintenance, people, it's only because your construction is 15 blocks total. The day you have over 7 structures, each over 500 blocks, you'll sing a different tune.
If Endermen had been around since the beginning, everyone would have already developed ways of defending against them.
Doubtful. There is no known way to prevent endermen from taking apart the landscape. If a human player destroys your constructions and landscape: it's griefing and you hate it.
If a non-human player destroys your constructions and landscape: it's a an addition to the game and an ode to the true spirit of survival.
Please, everyone who said endermen removing blocks were anything positive, please read this one over and over, and remember it next time anyone criticises the game using arguments while you have none.
Thanks.
I'm glad I won't have to use the mod anymore. HALLELUJAH!
I seriously hope people stfu about this damn thing now.
Yes we will. Here's you:
- whining when we mention a problem
- upset that mentioning said problem helped raise awareness about it
- to continue whining about us, you foretell the future by "hoping" people will stop talking about it, as if there would be any reason to mention it once it no longer exists, which, in turn, implies we never needed reasons to discuss it in the first place, which, in turn, is a lame accusation
I seriously hope you contribute more to other threads to post in, because that wasn't very useful to anyone.
Ok i ask different way. How much stuff did you spawn to make this thing ? If none that means you played without this thing long enough and you survived. So why the hell do you need it. Enderman does the good thing. You should not cheat and this is kind of a cheating.
Like I said before, if survival was the goal of the game, I'd have buried myself in the ground and not moved, forever. I don't play to survive, I survive to play.
To build my traps, I had to use hundreds upon hundreds of blocks, which I all dug myself. I don't need anything, just like I don't need the game, I just want to play because I like it. Why do you live? Do you need to live? No. So? Exactly. Nothing is useful in the end, that's not a reason not to do anything.
This isn't cheating because I violated no rules and exploited no bug. I did everything by the book. To cheat, you need to have a set goal, what was my set goal? To build a trap. The trap was the goal, not a means to another goal. I didn't cheat in building my trap. I could have hacked, I didn't.
Think about it, genius, if I wanted infinite amounts of items, I'd play in creative.
Am I right that his movements and block placing is completely random ? In that case I still don't see a big problem. It's slightly to mildly annoying, but nothing more.
You are correct, it is random.
As to not seeing a problem, consider the following: given long enough time, endermen will reduce the landmass to nothing but bedrock. They take blocks with them when they despawn or die. That should be a problem enough.
Wow . . . I'm a die-hard cynic and I did not expect this kind of response from Notch over the issue. I'm very glad to see that Notch is listening to the community and at least acknowledging the displeasure with Endermen.
This is indie gaming. I know because I am an indie dev, and I know several others in the community.
If you don't respond to bugs, your "fanbase" will be way more aggressive than towards Blizzard. The fact that a developer is a person and not an "amalgam of anonymous coders", changes the game entirely.
I know what I am talking about, I have been on the receiving end of nerdrage for adding things I liked or because of bugs. It's not pleasant, but if you have any pride as developer, you must take them like if they were being polite about it, specially if the concern is legitimate and not just idiocy on the player's part (which also happens, but I don't believe this to be the case).
What games have you made? I'm curious. Minecraft is the only indie game I really know and play... (except my own shitty ones made with RPG-maker, which had zero RPG elements...).
You sir, obviously dont know what trolling means. If you get annoying by thing like this, itnernet is not place for you.
Simply because he assumed you were being honest doesn't mean he doesn't know what trolling is. He just gave you more credit than you deserved. Go play somewhere else, adults are talking.
- whining when we mention a problem

Point out where I whined about anything? Did I ever post in this thread in the affirmative about Enderman moving blocks? Point out where I did. Nice circular logic while you were making an ass out of yourself by assuming I enjoy or support the current Enderman mechanics btw. I hope people stfu about it because it no longer matters, but yet here you are still bitching about it.
I guess this thread is over now. Notch has stated he will kill the ability we have been criticising. This is a great victory for Minecraft. I am thankful to Notch and everyone who helped.
You sir, obviously dont know what trolling means. If you get annoying by thing like this, itnernet is not place for you.
I said, if he was able to gather so much blocks that means he suvived long enough without needing that thing. So why need it now ? Get the point.
About that, yeah you dont need tons of plugins to run RPG server, but if you want it to be cool then you do. I host server and i know what am i talking about unlike you. There are plugins which can remove certain mob from the game. So please. Dont try to turn arround my words.
You are right from one point. We are beta testers, but beta testers cant affect gameplay just bugs. You are not development, you cant just say that you want something and it will be there. chance that mojang is reading this is 25% if not lower.
Only guy here trying to be brainhad AKA smartass is you. Get your facts straingh and stop wasting our and "your" time
haha, so I don't know what trolling is? Are you really admitting that you are trolling? Then, why? I've been on the internet daily on forums for the last 10 years... I've encoutered my fair share of trolls.
And you missed my point. We don't build stuff becouse we need them, we build them becouse they are fun to build. Who needs a 24-hour clock in minecraft? No one, but it's fun to build. All of the fun I get from minecraft lies in building complex stuff. Aaand, teachers all over the world is seeing the potential in using minecraft in class.
oh, so I don't know what I am talking about now, huh? I am admin on a server, and have been for a long time. We run a ton of plugins, but I care for vanilla Minecraft as well, becouse I like playing single player also, without mods. It should be playable without mods as well.
Then you go on to say that we don't matter in the development. Well, Notch did see our point this time, he has stated that Endermen block moving will be nerfed. I guess that proves you wrong. Besides, I have been a member in a lot of game communities, and to name one of the best, Bohemia Interactive, they lissen to their players ALL the time. Alot of the patches has been filled with player requested features. The more indie a game is, the more chance you'll have to have some power into the development.
I am in this thread to be constructive. You are not contributing anything, you are just mocking other people, and I would wan't you to stop. If you don't have anything constructive to say, then don't say it. Your posts are only clogging up the thread.
Actually I make real maps for games using actual level editors when I'm not playing minecraft, and that's exactly what I do.
So what if you spent months on it, I've spent years on stuff and I still never touch it once it's done. If you enjoy making things then finished things are just a waste of space, get rid of them and get some new files open so you can continue to make things. The only reason to keep the things you make is if you make them for acclaim, not because you enjoy making things, and if that's your motivation you'll always be disappointed, because acclaim never lasts.
eeh, wow. This was uncalled for. People are different, I don't see anything wrong in what you are doing. But then again, having to abbandon a map before it's finished must be frustrating for some. I can see why some like to make a bunch of maps and then forget about them, but not all people are like that.
To be blunt, did you get upset or offended by what I wrote? I am just baffled by this response...
I'm pretty sure the only way people will understand the negatives of the pickup ability, and why the (or lack of) positives are no good, is if Notch makes a public statement about why he believes the ability to be a "horrible idea".

When you get to the heart of the matter, that's pretty much what you end up with. The block-removing ability adds nothing to anything.
You haven't read any of the thread, and you haven't even read the first post. For crying out loud, I even link said mod in my first post!
