I was thinking the same thing, why would you build a mob tower out of dirt?!!!?!?!
Very practical reason, in fact.
rock = pick axe = 3 diamonds to make
dirt = shovel = 1 diamond
Adding to this that dirt is more quickly shovelled up than rock is pickaxed, and the fact that it'd cost me three times as less diamonds, I chose dirt.
What difference is there anyway? Endermen removes dirt as easily as rock or obsidian or even bed rock.
And one more thing, the most important: one explosion of TNT can mine up to 60 dirt blocks, while it'd only mine 10 blocks of rock.
Before this dirt trap, I made a huge one out of cobblestone, based on principles that proved FAIL. I had built checkered layers of platforms inside a giant box, with water at the bottom, taking everyone and everything to a lava grinder UNDER THE SEA, and I shat rusty nails just building this stuff underwater...
Then I learned that mobs will not voluntarily jump down 3 blocks' height... Had I known that, I'd never have made such a death factory. Had it not been for that, it would have worked perfectly.
It's still usable, I figure. I could put pistons on every platform to push mobs off, but that'd require complex redstone circuits and pulses and what not. But feasible.
I was also advised to simply add blocks so there'd be no fall greater than 2.
It is a farm to raise animals not to kill them! Because now animals spawn only once per world and are persistent. in 1.9 there will be breeding.
And the fence?
The god damn Enderman took it apart!
A farm to raise animals and not to kill them... New to me, I wasn't aware animals only spawn once now, and are persistent. I like the idea though. That way I can truly farm/breed, and pray nobody calls me a cheater for breeding cows and wolves and what not. I'll farm anything because I love the concept.
I did figure that the enderman took the missince fence, but I wasn't sure whether you approved of enderman or not, or what.
Does anyone know if pistons will have the ability to kill? I'd love to use pistons to crush mobs to death, but so far it doesn't do any such things. You can't even kill yourself with pistons. I once suggested a spike-piston, which would not have the flat part, but a spike, and could kill mobs or break blocks. Couple that with a core (lava and water making cobblestones) and also with this other thing I suggested, a reverse dispenser, a box that actually takes items when they're in their collectible form, and you'd have a 100% automated stone machine that'd fill your boxes until they're full!
Yes, I love the industrial side of Minecraft. More than I like shovelling dirt for 10 hours straight (and I have done that in the past).
Didn't you read my first posts? I hate What ender-griefers do to my landscape! :smile.gif:
And yes I too love the breeding idea... MY FARMS WILL BE EPIC!!
I probably read it, but don't remember which is your first and maybe I read other posts of yours and confused you with someone else.
Permanent animals is a brilliant idea. It'd force us to farm them and take care of them and what not. I thought of that just before I read your post on it and it made me happy. That's the right way for Minecraft, not enderman silliness.
The more Minecraft resembles a living biosphere, the better. Animals, plants, etc. The richer it gets, the more complex, and the more stuff we can create, devise, and use. Farming animals or building death factories is the exact same thing to me, in principle. I loved farming trees in the past, but there was little to do apart from waiting and that was annoying.
You do know you are posting off topic in your own thread? Oh well....
I heard there was an idea about a spiky block that could be pushed by pistons and kill animals... I do not know whether it will be implemented...
Yes, I do know what I'm doing. It's not entirely off topic though since it still relates to things we discuss here. I don't mind digressions but if you do, feel free to ignore my digressions. I wouldn't want to open a new thread just for that.
Mojang needs to work more on stuff like pistons. I'd want a conveyor belt and such. I suggested that, and people were like "just use water". Just like when I suggested a bed to skip nights, people said "just go AFK or browse internet in the meantime". Just like when I suggested something to cut leaves off trees and possibly use them as blocks, people said, "just burn them, moron". I'm glad Mojang usually thinks the way I do, since all these things are now virtual realities.

I'm fine with that.
Could this be the quote that people misread as meaning that mobs killed "naturally" will drop nothing at all? I don't know, but that was my impression. If he says they won't drop XP, which makes perfect sense, then maybe he means that the rest will stay as normal.
It doesn't matter, they would destroy it even if it was made of bedrock. Proven true since before this thread started.
Yeah, it's funny how people targeted my dirt... Apart from being easier to dig and use, I saw no difference with stone. Sure, creepers may blow more of it, but it's easier to replace too, and so far, no creeper ever blew a bit of it because I designed it to be invincible.
Somebody said that enderman can pick a block from 200 radius! Is it true?? Cause i think this ability is normal, but NOT FOR 200 range, this is really madness!!! Maybe he should pick up a block right in front of him?? Also i think, that this mob farms is something... you know... unrealistic... i build my own many times too, but i don't like the idea of stupid mob farming. They already added melon farming, and pumpkin farming, realistic, normal, lifestyle. I think they'll add more, also i think they must make dirt blovk fall down like a sand or gravel, but it's another thread...

They pick up blocks near them, but they can spawn in a 200 range. This means in a 200 radius your forests will look terrible and you will have to be on forest ranger duty to keep your parks clean from the litter bug threat. Isn't it frightening?! OoooOOOooo~
They CAN NOT spawn in a 2 high area, they would suffocate and die if they did as they are three blocks high.
It is such now why I have settled with my mineshafts being 2 blocks high, as when I was doing my normal 3x3 tunnels I was finding a few spawning in every once in a while.
@RedRainn:
I don´t have a mobgrinder, but having build big structures on my own too, in a vanilla game, i understand your point. Its fun to build, while survive, not just construct for showcase (creativ mod). Just as a suggestion, the survival players should try to build something big, it doesn´t even have to have a use, just look good. Then wait and see.

Absolutely. Most of what I worked on had no practical uses, and you could say even the death factory doesn't, since its main goal, to me, is to make TNT, which in turn I use for... future things I haven't quite decided on yet, but it involves a lot of blowing up. I want to blow up entire mountains. The point of that? Not sure, but I want to do it.
Completely agreed. Even tho i don't have a mob trap, i still don't like the idea of them moving blocks. I hate seeing tree trunks replaced with dirt and messed up mountains.
For people saying "It's survival, live with it." : It's still survival, you work hard for your mob trap so that you can get items easier in the future. Automated systems, development.
Oh and sorry Ovus. You were right after all, but i still disagree with the creeper thing ;P

uhm.. well then=)) Anyway i think, there'll be server mod like one that disables creeper damage to blocks, and it will disable enderman's ability to pick blocks, ot it won't, but enderman gets copy of block, and original will remain.

Nope. If they die they will not drop the block they are carrying.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.
Thanks.
