We don't debate mobtraps anymore, and we don't debate endermen anymore; the thread no longer has a reason to be. Thanks to all who participated with politeness, reason, and arguments!

I spent hours these past few weeks building a giant death factory for mobs - the hostile sort - and I finally managed to make a very efficient one. Now, I updated, and within two minutes of activating my death factory, everything went wrong. There was water where there shouldn't be. I suspected enderman. And I was correct. Upon inspection, tons of blocks had been removed; my channels were completely sabotaged and my whole construction rendered useless. It was a real pain to fix it up because it's all in the dark and made of channels you can't jump out of and etc.
Now it's fixed, but if I turn off the peaceful mode, they will once again destroy my creation.
I think enderman's ability to move around blocks should be cancelled. If they move blocks around in the wild, it makes no difference and you'd hardly notice; and when they remove blocks from your constructions, it's not particularly fun, and rebuilding is a major pain in the potato, especially if you have a device made to spawn mobs and kill them afterwards.
I read somewhere that endermen would only move natural blocks and not those placed by the player, but all the blocks I used in my trap were placed by me. Is this a bug that will be solved in the near future or will enderman always be able to displace player-placed blocks?
If enderman continues to have this ability, and if there's nothing you can do to stop him, then I must forget about my massive death factory, and much more, since I used this to get gunpowder to get TNT to flatten the land around my home and many other things.
If you too wish enderman couldn't remove your blocks, say so in this thread.
PS: If you disagree and like that enderman can remove your blocks, I'm sure you have valid reasons in other contexts, but if you have created a complex construction which needs to remain just as it is to function, you will understand how handicapping enderman can be: it's either peaceful mode forever, or forget about your inventions altogether (since my factory can't work on peaceful).
EDITS: I have been told a million times to lower the ceiling down to 2 blocks; new question: are we certain that endermen won't spawn in 2 blocks high rooms? and if they still spawn in there, can they remove blocks while suffocating?
EDITS: We are no longer discussing mobtraps, solutions were offered, discussed, and that debate is no longer up; the current discussion centers around the general landscape and how endermen will inevitably make everything look nasty; also, we discuss whether it's any fun to spend that sort of effort protecting everything by slathering our lands with torches or flooding everything.
EDITS: If, for a reason or another, you don't want to discuss enderman but merely remove his ability to move blocks, here's a mod that will do so:
Don't forget to delete some folder called meta-inf in the minecraft.jar file. If you can't open the .jar, know that it can be opened with winrar or any program of the sort. These were the two problems I've had when I installed that mod: unable to open jar and then having forgotten to delete meta-inf.
I completely agree with this. When I first read that enderman were going to be able to move any blocks I knew it was a bad idea. Not only does it ruin players creations, but I don't like my minecraft world being messed up by someone other than me. They can remove the endermans ability to pick up blocks and instead make it a little more dangerous to be fair.

How about instead of negating all player placed blocks there are certain blocks (im thinking bricks/obsidian/netherrack) that endermen will leave alone. or maybe they will leave it alone if it is within 2 block in any direction of netherrack or light stone. Just something to make it so that creations like this do not get ruined by endermen.
Yeah if they really remove player-placed blocks that would be annoying
@"booohooo, then just replace the block" people; well yeah but it would be annoying if you have to replace 10 blocks every night or so~
Then i might think it only logs which blocks you placed since 1.8 so it doesn't know you placed the others yourself since you did so in 1.7.3? not sure on that though
Two minutes and my whole thing was ruined. Two minutes! And it took me much more to repair it. You made a good point about the update possibly not knowing that I placed the blocks myself. What a major annoyance...
You do realize it is Survival mode right? if you are mad about your creations being destroyed make them in creative mode? like this is the adventure update...the game is actually fun to play now and has some challenge to it. I love the enderman

Nobody listened to me! I told you it would amount to nothing more than a nuisance. I told you it would be simply irritating and serve no value to the gameplay. You all just called me a whiner and told me I didn't know how they would implement block destruction. Told me Notch wouldn't let this happen. You all had your full faith in Mojang on full display. Mojang would never let this happen, you said.
Oh no, the game is fighting back against your monster murdering machine. I'd call that karma bro. Why not grab yourself a sword and fishing pole, go hunting the good ol' fashion way. :cool.gif:

Agreed. Moving blocks around is not scary in the least, but it's damn annoying and makes me hate enderman even though I still haven't seen him yet. I'm all in favour of removing that ability and making him stronger otherwise.
Enderman's ability is nothing less than incorporated griefing and I don't know anyone who would put up with that. As much as I can accept the creeper's explosive character, I can't stomach enderman's. You can do something against the creeper, but you can't do a thing against enderman removing blocks like that.
It's survival mode. Light up your base and surround it with walls/lava/fire/cacti/tnt to prevent enderman from messing with it. And for your mob grinder, it's only fair game that endermen try to sabotage it. A workaround would be to make your spawning room only 2 high, i guess.

It's a good idea in theory, but I'll show you a picture of my death factory, and you'll understand why I'm not exactly thrilled at the idea of rebuilding it all with obsidian...
now i do not want to update my server to 1.8 we have a massive mob trap and its quite tricky to go repair it and dont really want to rebuilt it so they see its played made block took us 4 day at 3 people to make it

I sure realise it's survival mode, it's the only mode I've ever played. Ruining my death factory has rather little to do with my survival, however. It doesn't kill me, it's just annoying. A death factory would be pointless in a creative mode, since you could get any item you want at any time: that's why your argument that it's survival mode makes little sense. I'd not need such a factory if I weren't playing on survival. I don't have a problem with challenges, as long as I stand a chance, which I don't in this case, since there's nothing I can do to prevent endermen from ruining my factory. This isn't a challenge, this is an interdiction.

Dat karma...
The problem with doing it manually is that it would take me forever to get the same amounts of gunpowder, and I would have to actually be in front of my computer to do so, and I don't have that kind of time, nor would I wish to spend 3 hours hunting creepers at night, ruining my eyes doing so, to get the same amount of powder I'd get from being AFK for 5 minutes.

omg.. its been confirmed they can pick up bedrock as well as tnt (which is player placed).
You want to build? play peaceful. you dont want endies? play 1.7.3. you want 1.8? deal. with. it.
I already updated and I don't think I can turn back. Moreover, I'd still want the updates. I'm not going to stay stuck in time just because one mob ruins the game; I just hope enough people will voice their annoyance at that, and maybe they will do something about it. I believe it's enough of a problem to be considered by Notch and company.
It's a gameplay feature. If you don't want to have fun in Survival mode with Enderman making your stay a nightmare unless you put...torches and water around your construction, very simple. If you dont like mob to mess with your construction play on peacefull, mod the game or get a previous MC version.
I welcome with open hands the new challenge of Survival.
Even though it could be annoying to get your construction destroyed by Creeper or moved by Enderman, it is Survival mode.

Who gives a ****? Me, obviously. He can change it. If enough people are annoyed by it as much as I am - and there are many - he will think about it.
The very least I want is a way to fight back. There is no challenge unless you can do something about a problem.
I think that's the point of survival.
