Okay, so here's what happened. I started up 1.8, full of joy. I had tried the pre-release and it did this same thing, but I figured it was fixed. I went in Singleplayer and generated a world. After it was done building the terrain, saving chunks appeared like normal, but the screen went black and I crashed! I'm running Windows XP, so I figure that's the problem.
Try deleting any mods that use modloader in .minecraft or just completely delete .minecraft and back up your worlds if needed. If after that you're still crashing, update java, get more ram, or stop using obsolete technology :biggrin.gif:

I had the Same Problem, but I use a Macbook to play Minecraft, and It doesn't crash when I create/open a world. It just blackscreens me. Notch, what is wrong with the update?

I'm using Windows 7 64-Bit.
6GB ram, 2.9GHZ quad processor, & Radeon ATI 4200.
Edit: You probably need to free some ram for minecraft if you can't afford to buy more.
anyway... Running a 64 bit, windows 7, 8gb ram, quad core, Nvidia graphics. No issues.
All i can say is update update update.
clean your minecraft folders.
Free up some ram or allocate some more.
all else fails.... UPGRADE
P.S XP FTW
Mine did that in the first pre release. I was under the impression that was fixed in the 2nd pre release.
