I am using a seed from another thread that creates a world with a nice big ocean and a few small islands. I've taken up residence on one of those islands, threw down enough torches to light the whole thing, and have spent most of my time working underground to gather resources. In past versions, on an island this size, I'd see some wildlife upon coming to the surface. But I've been playing quite a while now and have yet to see any animals. I am wondering if it's a biome thing. Has anyone else run into this as well while playing with this 1.8 pre-release? Or perhaps I missed reading some relevant info about this update?
Ocean biome probably doesn't have much for terrestrial spawn rates.

I think we are playing on the same seed man. We should compare notes some time.
If you travel by boat both north or south for 1.5 minecraft days or so, you will spot land. Gather as many chicken eggs as possible, and take them to your island, make a coop, and hope to god that at least one you chuck at the wall turns into another chicken. Animals load by chunk now, not random spawns. It is the best hope you have.
Also, melon/wheat farms are what have kept me going.
I settled on the island you spawn on, and have set it up so that there are redstone torches around the island, with hidden wiring linked to my cabin. I can flip a switch and light up the island if I don't want hostile mobs to spawn, and keep them off if I am low on gun powder, bones, or arrows.
Thanks for the info. I guess this whole island habitation thing is going to take some preparation. :smile.gif: Time to build a boat and gather some foodstuffs and eggs.

I spawned on an island with a small crevice, but opted to swim to another island not far away. I plan on exploring the initial island once I have better tools and some armor. I did manage to locate a mineshaft below my home island by digging down to the bedrock and hearing some zombies. Unfortunately I had only a small amount of torches handy when I found it, so I am putting further exploration off for now.
I posted a topic awhile ago about biomes (what I learned from looking through the code). Ocean, Desert, and River biomes do not spawn any animals, though monsters and squids still spawn.
If you need food, I suggest beating down a few spiders to get string. Then make a fishing rod.
It seems like this is a bug...
Mobs (animals) can no longer spawn on islands even if there lit up and all regular requirements are met...
snow biomes no longer generate either so there are still lots of bugs which are hopefully being ironed out soon...

Yes, that was my thought as well. I guess it's going to be lonely out there.

I have figured out how to remedy this through chickens. Read this thread for details:

That's retarded. Until a breeding system is implemented, random spawns should stay on.
