if the vines were in strongholds and spread like this it would be cool, I get why people don't like them overrunning their stuff, but I still like the idea of endless vines, perhaps a setting or bonemeal or something?
Instead of having vines be climbable, we should make them craftable into rope. Rope could then be attached to an anchor block (wooden planks + iron ingot), or a bit of fence / iron bars.
Also the spread of vines needs to be slowed down and also limited to within a few blocks of a player-placed vine.

How about it grows VERY SLOWLY. As in, one vine in a random direction, every 10 minutes?
It only grows faster when its either raining, or close to water. Good idea?
There just needs to be a difference between the root of the vine and the foliage, similar to tree growth (trunk + leaves = tree, leaves only grow up to x meters away from the trunk). You could then have the vine planted, and know that it would not support more than X radius of foliage (or Y square meters of foliage).

I'm sorry Captain Planet, but I feel entirely justified in making pacts with hell in order to destroy the work of nature. Netherrack lighting is now mandatory on all my buildings.
I actually don't mind the vines... I mean they ARE annoying IRL too. And it makes things look cool, too. Floating Island + vines growing down to the ground!
Think of it like this:
If you had an IRL house in the middle of a swamp, and you never cleaned it, moss would start growing on the side.
It just adds a more realistic feel to Minecraft I guess, and It's another chore for you to do.
Remember to "tend" to your "garden" everyday. Otherwise weeds will grow... like that.
I think the best solution would be to set a maximum amount of possible spawns coming from 1 vine. Like if you place 1 vine on your wall, it can spawn a maximum of 10 other vines around it. That way you can still have vines grow over walls, but they don't take over your whole friggin house.=p
Then those vines spawn 10 vines around it. And again. And again.

I still have yet to see anyone make a statue of a dwarf strangling a kitten that you can live inside.

Exactly what I was thinking.

scary vines!
I like using them as decoration, but spreading to EVERYTHING I own isn't exactly good
VINE IS DA BEST!!!!!!!
Put a 2 block gap in the bridge. Sprint jump over.
BAM. Mobproof and no vines will pass.
Yes I would love that when I try to decorate my castle in 1.8 and I have to wait years for it to get covered.
