Vines should only be able to grow 10 blocks from a natural block like grass, wood and mossy stone, making them not to much of a threat unless your house is made out of wood. and with food now regenerating health slowly, vines could be mixed with flowers and enderpearls to make a medicine that heals 2 hearts instantly. that would give them a purpose and if endermen are made rarer i think it would be balanced.

The simple solution is that they can only spread in swamp biomes, and placed vines can only grow straight down.

People have said before that vines could be used as decoration for ruins and stuff, having vines only grow in the swamp biomes would ruin this and i like the idea of having vines growing naturally in ALL directions not just down. I think they should also require high light level to grow to so that caves aren't covered in vines.
There are ways to contain vine growth architecturally. Vines can't grow up over overhangs. They can't grow diagonally, nor on horizontal flat surfaces. They also cannot grow on surfaces with torches, signs etc. I don't think they grow on glass either. I have a fishing room covered in vines intentionally, and it doesn't spread to the rest of the house because there's a door and torches which stop the growth.

I said only SPREAD in swamps. There's nothing stopping people (or the terrain gen) putting some in ruins.
And if they can spread at all, then they will take over.
My experience was similar. My first impression when I saw a swamp was OH WOW! cool trees, vines hanging off at different lengths, looked very nice. But when I came back to look again . . .
the trees were all completely uniform, every single vine, reached the ground. The trees looked very bad. And to my true horror, I saw the vines crawling along the sides of ground blocks, down into caves, onto some birch trees in the adjacent biome, and worst, one found it's way into a mineshaft.
So my new theory? Vines are actually ALIEN INVADERS! They've got evil insidious plans to TAKE OVER THE WORLD! Burn them out now before they become unstoppable!
i think vines atm are about the greatest thing ever, i really enjoy vinifying things, and i really wanmt to put vines somewwhere on a server, then come back a day later XD
There was a film version? I read the book myself. And yes, I was thinking about triffids a bit myself when I realized just how insane vine spread was currently in Pre-1.8
My bad :biggrin.gif:
On topic: then i guess we could fence-in our areas since they can grow on fences.

Wow this is amazing!
I wonder how after the official 1.8 release it will take before vines get nurfed.
