Honestly, I don't get the huge wait for everything.
I'm just going to compare this to Terraria. In the time it took from 1.7 to 1.8, Notch added Underground mines, 3 new mobs, Pistons, Poison, different lighting and New Biomes.
In that time, Terraria added ~70 new items, an alchemy system, a ton of new enemies, new biomes, reworked the entire engine, added critical hits, added lots of debuffs, including poison and fire.
If an update for Minecraft gets delayed, you get told to deal with it. Then half the stuff is missing anyway.
You delay an update for terraria, and then the coders decide to add in much more stuff to say thanks.
I REALLY think that its sad when the whole of Mojang codes so much slower than one guy.
The one guy that codes Terraria also doesn't have to manage the following:
-Media appearances such as TV shows, Internet shows, conventions, etc.
-A global franchise that extends outside of the gaming industry into things like apparel, books, dishes, etc.
-Several other games that are being developed internally and externally, or published
The short version is that the guy who writes Terraria probably has way more time on his hand that anybody at Mojang does
Chill man, 1.8 isn't out yet you know, so its bugged. Also, theyre making millions of dollars. And guess what. You're not. So you shouldn't be talking. There will be NPC's in 1.8 FYI.
What does him making money have ANYTHING to do with he just posted? AND THERE INFACT WONT BE NPC'S IN 1.8. If you knew how to read you would know that there being released in 1.9.

You'd think it'd be fun being able to tell who is talking out of their ass, but knowing just makes you mad. First off, java is a horribly inefficient language for games. Java is the reason playing the game takes huge amounts of ram. Properly recoding the game into C++ would increase performance immensely. However I am quite happy that the game was made with java, for it is the reason that the game has grown so much. We were able to treat the code of the game like a sandbox as well and make mods easily. If the game was in C++ originally I doubt it would have gotten as far. If he released the source code however, that would be a different matter. I'd love for the official version of the game to be released in C++ with the source code.
Second, lol at that guy who didn't know **** about SSDs and ran back to 4chan because he was horribly wrong.
Third, people apparently don't know how coding as a team works. I wonder if anybody here commenting on coding has even ever worked with SVN before. You can't have people in the team who don't have their **** down. Starting from scratch is often easier than fixing really bad code. Having twice as many people to code does not equal half the coding time, etc. If minecraft was being properly managed they wouldn't have just one person working on an update, they'd have a small team with delegated tasks.
Lazy stupid half-assed Mojang isn't working hard enough to give us updates that are a COURTESY to us players and not in any way REQUIRED of them. They need to get to work.
I, like many, have been highly anticipated the 1.8 update since it was announced months ago. All I would like to know, is with atleast 2 months of planning, coding, testing, etc, why does Notch and Mojang half-ass everything? Why is it, that a single mod developer can add more to the game in one week than notch can in 2 months? Does anyone remember the Halloween update? Everyone was extremely excited for it and couldn't wait, only to see it was half-assed and never finished. I feel like this release is going to be the same way. For example: endermen.
The way notch described endermen was creepy and adrenaline-pumping. I imagined them to be awesome and scary. But in reality, what do they do? they walk toward you and cause damage when they touch you. Yeah, real scary.
Or how's about NPC villages. I expected a bunch of pigmen living in harmony, working together mutually. What did we get? A bunch of horribly generated houses that are extremely bugged.
Sorry for the rage thread, but I can't stand the fact that Notch can't do more work in 2 months than any other dev can do in 1 week. I remember the days when notch would update every Friday, and he was close with the community.
On a more positive note: mine shafts, blue spiders, new lighting, silverfish, biomes, and the new combat are awesome. And I do understand that this is just a pre-release, but any other developer team would have atleast 50 more features after 2 months of coding. I do think notch is great, but he needs to get back to the way it was when he was actually an indie game developer. He got more done back then.
What part of "it's only a pre-release and extremely buggy" did you not understand? Do they teach reading comprehension in school anymore or do you just eat the books?

I've been sorta reading this thread, at first thinking it was a noob whiney post but realizing it was in fact a whiny post with several good points. And I must tell you, guy that I'm quoting, to READ THE THREAD AS WELL. He's not just complaining about the bugs; he's complaining about the lack of progress. This was supposed to be released tomorrow, yet the leaked version is not even close finished. It's not that there are bugs in the game, it's that this is not the kind of progress that a company with this many people should be making.
Also, the fact that they are making three games at once shouldn't be an excuse. I've had this problem before too: I get tired of one project and decide to start on another, even if the first isn't finished. The problem is, we paid Notch, if not with the assurance but with the expectation that he'd finish. And since Mojang is no longer a little one-man team with a day job and tons of other commitments, their main duty should be to their customers.
We've seen Mojang grow from a small operation to a considerable larger one, raking in a few million dollars. It seems, however, that their work ethic has decreased as their resources increase. This the kind of behavior I would expect from a free flash-game developer, not a company that's teaming up with AAA studios and releasing their game on three different platforms.

You're taking this the wrong way. He's come a long way since when I started playing minecraft in November 2009. I'm not doubting he's a good programmer (even though he's using the worst language of all time), it's just the fact that a single mod developer contributes more to the game than he does. And when he messes stuff up, said mod developers always have to fix it. It's just a shame.
Rarly the mods is working with other mods. see the updates as mods. the mod (1.7) if it where done wrong the mod 1.8 might not work with 1.7 becouse it was badly codes. so the the mods are working faster but they take alot of time to work with ver 1.8 etc etc. get it? thats how i think it is.
Let me just, butt in here.
I'm an indie developer myself. C# is my domain.
Let me tell you all that development of anything, even something you love and want to make, can be slow as ****.
The amount of features and etc. that have been added in 1.8 is actually what I'd expect from them. Development is tough.
Basically, unless you have done game development before (Note: Game Development. Not Mod Development.) don't even bother criticising the amount of work they get done. And if you have done development before, **** son you must be some sort of super human worker beast.
Chill man, 1.8 isn't out yet you know, so its bugged. Also, theyre making millions of dollars. And guess what. You're not. So you shouldn't be talking. There will be NPC's in 1.8 FYI.
they will be in part 2 of 1.8 which is 1.9. This is already confirmed.
i think the main reason why it took so long is because of the coding for AI, geological(rivers, ravines etc.), make NPC villages spawn properly, strongholds, abandoned mines and more.
it is also in java, so a game as big as minecraft, if you add/temper things there it is going to mess up other things that you don't want to mess up.
this and it is in Java because Java is already on multiple platforms which means Notch and the rest don't have to create code for linux, windows, and mac. Java has already done that and established its name in the online environment. Notch just uses the universal Java language and no worries. Sure it is not as efficient if he used native mac/windows/etc code, but it works.
I didn't read all of the comments, of course. Actually I have been a member to the forums for 5 or 10 minutes...
Sharing thoughts is nice, so that the game we are playing can get better and better, but what I see is people swearing after a "unfinished beta blabla point blabla version" of an unfinished game.
And (correct me if I'm wrong) I have never seen any other game that is open to playing since alpha (or before alpha, I'm not sure). Don't mention the "multiplayer beta tests" of some other games. These are for "testing", not for playing.
So, Minecraft will change a lot until its full release, many things will be added and it is very normal to face some problems on the way to the full release.
So come on, what is wrong to see some problems of an unfinished version of an unfinished update of an unfinished work?
For being slow, as I mentioned, we play no other game during its development and we don't know any of the dates when the alpha/beta versions are done and when developers go on to the next phase. It is a great opportunity for us to be able to get "involved" in this development period of minecraft.
I see your disappointment but these are indie developers, and I think it is more important to show us a complete game rather than an unfinished game which released just in time. So, you wanted it in time, and it is unfinished....
secondly, I'm not saying it's easy to make a game. But just look at the hundred of mod developers on this forum. A single person can get more done in 1 week than notch can in 2 months. That's all I'm getting at.
They couldn't I bet notch could go 3 times faster then ANY developer on this forum. You must realize hes been doing this over 20 years. Most of the people here aren't even 20...
Who made the API for the modders? Who coded the whole game?
It's BETA. Yes , I do agree we've paid for it and instead of continuing adding contents to the game he enters some competitions and makes alot of other projects.
Without the API , modders wouldn't make such awesome mods and if they would , it would've take them more than one week. Modders don't care if it's buggy or lame , they do it for fun to learn java and practice their skills.
I am annoyed I've used up all my karma powers today, I've given it to all the thread starters that state vailid points without resorting to name calling or who contribute to actually helping the community, but I want to give one to Benislav for being a bit more of a respectful **** than me.
Okay, go to the modding section and look at some of the mods there. Many are ONE man projects and yet they get updated every other week at latest. Many are far more complex than any previous MC update and will continue to out-do the new updates as well. Don't feed me that same ******** that everyone else here has and go "NOTCH IZ A HUMON BING AND NEEDS TO TAK SHITZ AND EAT AND STUFF!" For one, so do the modders. For two, most of those activities take 30 minutes or less, leaving plenty of time in a six hour workday to get some ****ing coding done.
Lets face it, you people are just in denial, believing that somehow that 20 bucks you spent will pay off. It wont unless we stop praising the **** out of Notch and tell him to get his lazy ass back to work before we personally buy a ****ing plane ticket to Sweden and take our money back.
However, I do agree any bugs may be ironed out, but many problems that re technically not bugs will still remain.
EDIT: Also, last time I checked, the ****ing start up page in my JAR list at least 5 coders. What the **** are they doing? I don't even think they exist.
Also, once again, **** Scrolls and Cobalt. Couldn't give two ****s about them. Both are generic slop that most indie game developers make to try and get big in the market. Yet they don't, you want to know why? Those games are not original in the slightest. And really they're just online flash games I have to pay for.
Whoa, there are so many incorrect and simply built on rage points you make in your post it's hilarious. I honestly anticipate finding difficulty in my ability to respond to all of them.
Let's try: Many people think their twenty dollars has paid off. I've put more time into Minecraft than most other games I've played. Most other games I've played have cost between $40 and $60. Second, yeah, modders have, in the past, done more in the same amount of time than Notch has. That doesn't mean Notch is lazy. Modders are generally adding mediocre or simple features. Yes, I've seen mods like the aether, and yes, mods like those are exceptions. However, 1.8 has changed the face of Minecraft incredibly, and I can see why it would take so long.
As for "It wont unless we stop praising the **** out of Notch and tell him to get his lazy ass back to work before we personally buy a ****ing plane ticket to Sweden and take our money back." (I corrected your bad grammar in the quote above, spell-check didn't because "by" is an actual word. You're welcome.) I won't stop praising Notch. Notch made an amazing game. I like it a lot. And you must too, if you're spending this much time whining about it on the forums. That, or your life truly is lacking something and I dearly hope that you find something to fill that gaping hole.
Let's talk about the "five coders" thing. Notch and Jeb_ work on Minecraft. That's it. Kappische does business stuff for them, and Mollstam keeps the website up. Jnkboy does graphics, as far as I know. That's it. There are two coders.
Finally, I don't give a **** what your opinions on Scrolls or Cobalt are. These games haven't come out yet. I honestly hope you get your help, kid. It's not healthy to be piling so much rage into one thread. And if you're thinking of saying the same to me, I ain't even mad, bro. Have a nice day.

No one made an API for modders, maybe you don't understand what API means. I think people forget that all the code that modders work with is obfuscated. Modders have to deal with variables named a,b,c,d,e and classes named zz.class while Notch has nice, neat Notch style unobfusacted code to work with.
