I, like many, have been highly anticipated the 1.8 update since it was announced months ago. All I would like to know, is with atleast 2 months of planning, coding, testing, etc, why does Notch and Mojang half-ass everything? Why is it, that a single mod developer can add more to the game in one week than notch can in 2 months? Does anyone remember the Halloween update? Everyone was extremely excited for it and couldn't wait, only to see it was half-assed and never finished. I feel like this release is going to be the same way. For example: endermen.
The way notch described endermen was creepy and adrenaline-pumping. I imagined them to be awesome and scary. But in reality, what do they do? they walk toward you and cause damage when they touch you. Yeah, real scary.
Or how's about NPC villages. I expected a bunch of pigmen living in harmony, working together mutually. What did we get? A bunch of horribly generated houses that are extremely bugged.
Sorry for the rage thread, but I can't stand the fact that Notch can't do more work in 2 months than any other dev can do in 1 week. I remember the days when notch would update every Friday, and he was close with the community.
On a more positive note: mine shafts, blue spiders, new lighting, silverfish, biomes, and the new combat are awesome. And I do understand that this is just a pre-release, but any other developer team would have atleast 50 more features after 2 months of coding. I do think notch is great, but he needs to get back to the way it was when he was actually an indie game developer. He got more done back then.

Chill man, 1.8 isn't out yet you know, so its bugged. Also, theyre making millions of dollars. And guess what. You're not. So you shouldn't be talking. There will be NPC's in 1.8 FYI.
You're taking this the wrong way. He's come a long way since when I started playing minecraft in November 2009. I'm not doubting he's a good programmer (even though he's using the worst language of all time), it's just the fact that a single mod developer contributes more to the game than he does. And when he messes stuff up, said mod developers always have to fix it. It's just a shame.

The Mojang team has quite a lot of work to do, mainly with Scrolls, Cobalt and of course Minecraft.
This is a pre-release, villages will be bugged and so will quite a few other things be bugged in this pre-release, just give it until the official release and I'm sure it will look a lot better.
even with all the work they have, they could still get a lot more done than they do now. If they just gave up 5-6 hours per day of nothing but coding, they would have released a fully featured 2.0 out by now. I'd understand if Notch had a job etc, but this is his job.

A man starts a game
We all pay for it
The man gives us the finger to work on a different game
Yet you still go "MAN HES HARD AT WORK ON THE OTHERGAME GIVE HIM A BREAK"
This thread fails, but I'm not going to leave it at that.
Reasons it took so long:
COMPLETELY NEW lighting engine
COMPLETELY NEW world generation including complex abandoned mineshafts, complex npc villages with a huge variety of buildings, and two new biomes.
COMPLETELY NEW mobs
NPCs built from the ground up
Notch got married
PAX
Notch helped to design the Xbox and pocket versions of the game
And many more reasons I can't think of off the top of my head.
Keep in mind that Notch and the rest of Mojang need to worry about idiot fanboys (and girls) who can't accept change; this makes it hard to release such a wonderfully game-changing update quickly.
The NPCs will be added in 1.9, as will functioning experience.
i think the main reason why it took so long is because of the coding for AI, geological(rivers, ravines etc.), make NPC villages spawn properly, strongholds, abandoned mines and more.
it is also in java, so a game as big as minecraft, if you add/temper things there it is going to mess up other things that you don't want to mess up.
My biggest problem is that you would think that it would work like this:
More time = more content or less bugs
but we seem to have this:
More time = less content and more bugs
Anyway, I just hope that they eventually get it done (although at this point I would say it's a bit optimistic that it will be finished by Minecon, let's hope they prove me wrong though).
The thing about the mods is that %99.99 are incredibly unbalanced and just as buggy. Alot of the few good mods are either adding only one single thing, and the even rarer good mods that add a **** ton have alot of OP and unbalanced content. A lot of dev time is spent planning and tweaking to try and make things as balanced as possible. Not saying that vanilla MC isn't completely balanced, especially with this pre-release though.
I personally think Notch is doing a good job, but that's just me. I'm a patient man, so these long update times don't bug me if they're small or not.

Yeah? And only notch could take 2 months to complete this stuff. A developer with good time management would have got all of this done in less than 1 month, especially if it was his only job.

what? are you serious? Most popular mods work near flawlessly. Mo' Animals, Humans+, Aether, etc. work perfectly. And they are only in beta.
Lets not forget that notch can't build a decent chunk renderer worth a damn, so Optimine/Optifine had to do it for him.
You have to take into account that some coding can go into the hundreds and thousands lines, most high profile games that run LUA go into the millions in some cases with lines of code.
It is a very long process and a very hard thing to get good at.
first off, who in god's name would use lua?
secondly, I'm not saying it's easy to make a game. But just look at the hundred of mod developers on this forum. A single person can get more done in 1 week than notch can in 2 months. That's all I'm getting at.

but whatever. As long as he keeps his promise to release the Source Code, I don't care
Lets see notch code one :smile.gif:
also it would have been nice if he didn't make it in Java. Java leaves it to be horribly unoptimised

First it's Jens and Notch is working on the secret project, he did help a little :tongue.gif:
Let's see Notch code one? Wait... Explain.

point taken, but lets not forget he had August 29 to October 30 to get everything on the list done, and he didn't do half of it.
