It is FACT. I can confirm, in an interview of Notch (it is him), that Hunger bar WILL NOT BE OPTIONAL AT ALL.
My opinion: I expected this. Notch as I've openly stated, does not know how to design games. He designs them like toys, they're fun, he wants them, he takes them and puts them into his little world. You don't exist, only he does. Simple really, whether we like it or not.

Minecraft is beautiful because it's full of possibilities and it gives us great freedom. If you begin taking that away, you begin killing minecraft slowly perhaps, but the end will be inevitable..
(99% chance there will be a mod for disabling hunger)
I will be sure of it, actually.
While my reaction in the other thread (which I just deleted for the purposes of putting in a more fitting thread here) was a bit shocked and quick, I can live with this (knowing that I can simply just disable the hunger system entirely and implement classic food items). The truth is that at this point I really don't care what they do with hunger because I know that they're at least making some happy, and that I myself don't have to care about it. So... more power to them, I guess?

I currently dislike the idea of hunger being mandatory.
For me, it's not so much that it adds a new layer of difficulty, but rather that it has the potential to add a new level of tedium in the form of micromanagement (having to closely monitor a certain aspect of gameplay over prolonged periods of time) - something I'm not really keen on in Minecraft. For instance, it's relatively easy to keep your health up by maintaining a farm, but I'm not so certain that it will continue to be fun.
Furthermore, I'm concerned about how this could affect me when I'm idling, particularly in multiplayer in which it is impossible to pause. As it is, I can leave the game running whilst doing other things without consequence, as long as my character is in a safe location. I don't really want to have to be forced to log out whenever something pops up in real life that forces me away from the computer temporarily, because it's all too easy to forget, and thus to return and find that my character has kicked the bucket even while being in a safe spot. Admittedly this is a weaker argument against hunger, however.
I'm open to changing my mind though. The update hasn't been released, and it could turn out that the hunger bar only depletes very slowly, making my fears unfounded.
If you don't like taking damage from hunger, then play on peaceful.
If you think its wussing out on the challenge of the game, then feel free to kill farm animals and cook there meat as food.
Odds are if you play minecraft for combat your going to be carrying around food anyways... the new system makes it so that its more "Hey, I need to think before I Leeeroy all these creepers." and less "There are 50 zombies here... but I have 20 pork-chops... so I'll be ok."

If you're idle, food does not dwindle. Activity=hunger lose. Idle=no lose at all.
Fyi, peaceful difficulty will exist to our knowledge.
Creative will be an entire MODE that makes a world creative - you cannot switch to creative from Survival on a world, ever, unless SMP.
Sounds like it'll become an annoyance pretty fast, tbqh. I'll probably mod it out within the week. I've never seen hunger successfully implemented in a game; hardcore mode in Fallout: New Vegas, for instance, was flat-out tedious.
You have to eat as much as you move, really. (this is once again an instance of Notch implementing a feature he never wanted to implement)
The only thing I fear about the no hunger mods though is mod compatibility... There's a chance that these no hunger mods might be incompatible with other popular mods, which would be really saddening for those who like their mods but also dislike the idea of forced hunger...

I dont want the option to wuss out of it if it's too hard. I like hardcore Survival.

Creative mode. 'nuff said.
peaceful mode is being replaced by creative mode and you wont have to worry about it in creative mode.

I just raged a little inside.
Peaceful is Minecraft without mobs.
Creative is Minecraft with infinite blocks.
Oh, well then that's even better, if it is indeed the case. :smile.gif:

Yep I know, KoreRekon confirmed that. :-)
