I say screw the house. I prefer the challenge of being a roaming nomad for the first few days. Okay, first off, I'd punch some wood, make a wooden pickaxe, mine some stone, make all the stone tools. I'd probably then make sure I have a healthy amount of wood, two stacks and lest we forget wheat seeds. Then, I'd then venture off in any random direction killing all animals in sight until I find something of interest or it turns to night, when it hits night I just prefer to mine underground at a 90 degree angle in complete darkness and keep going until I am sure it's safe.
By this point I'd make a temporary base. If I have any bones, I'd probably farm some wheat for food as to not starve to death. Place down a furnace and finally get some charcoal if I haven't found any coal by now. Light up the temporary base and continue mining until I hit a depth 11y or a cave. I'll probably come back up through my mining tunnel once it's day, kill any animals I can find as they are supposed to be far rarer. Scout the area, then head back down to mine at night.
On my third day, I shath totally head out in such of more things of interest if I haven't found any large cave systems by now. I'd venture until night, this time no temporary bases as by now I'd probably have near a full inventory. I'd just wait until it's day somewhere safe with blocks between me and my enemies. A bed would suffice, but needless to say I'd rinse and repeat until I found somewhere suitable to make base. A NPC village or giant mushroom forest would probably by my places of interest.
I'd make a rough home at first and work on it later, the farm is top priority so I don't have to worry about hunger anymore or killing the precious animal resources for food. Then get an animal farm up next. Round up every animal I can find in the area and expand my farming procedures even greater. Finally, I'd make a permanent mine and get myself some diamond tools and iron armour if I was not so lucky to do so at my temporary base. Of course I will only be satsified until I have a HUGE farm of about 50 animals or as many as I can get (not sure about the spawn limitations for 1.8 yet).
on SSP i would at first walk until i find a friendly defended NPC village and generally aim to become a bowman.
on SMP i would spawn tons of diamonds and then realise that i forgot to spawn some sticks so i go bash a tree down with diamonds then make tons of **** outta diamonds.
Like always. I find a Clearing in a Forest or on the Beach. I survive and Mine then i get into Living. I just may go Live in a Strong Hold if one spawns in the EPIC seed. 1907902565
Type it in and be amazed. I remember trying to survive there once... I fell off a cliff onto a creep thrice... Sucks crap Villages arent ready yet... IT LOOKED AMAZING IN THE 40000 VIDEOS OF THE SAME FOOTAGE
Uh, do what I normally do, hack in 50 diamonds with INVedit, give myself full diamond stuff, then make a pillar 127 blocks high, putting an overhang at the top.

Neckbeards! Doctor Cichocki does not approve of stupidity and neither do I, stop the spread of damned useless rules!
I would play in a world made Pre-1.8. If that doesn't count, I would dig a hidey hole, and wait out the night before making a huge underground base that is creeper-proof (then other mobs won't be able to get in, only spawn in there.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.

I'll be honest.
When 1.8 comes out and I make my new world, I will be too busy looking at everything to even collect wood or start on shelter.
And by the time the sun starts to set, I'll be without wood and vulnerable to the mobs.
If I'm lucky I'll come across a NPC village and take one of their houses.
