Tnx for replying again Mystify, I just started a new topic on this subject in the discussion forum: Winning the game
I really disagree with you on this one, because the game really tells you that 'you have done everything in the game and you can quit now'. Not in those words, but it's the general message.
Sure, you can continue in survival/creative mode, as it is now. But it implies a definite ending of your current world, which I do not have now. Even when I know that I have done 'everything' the game has to offer (apart from building a 96-pixel-color sreen) :smile.gif:
The game is in no way telling you "You have doen everything in the game and can quit now". The game is saying "You have accomplished this goal, congradulations". Obllivion doesn't end, not even implicitely, when you beat the main quest line. You don't stop playing GTA because you beat the storyline. You don't stop playing with lego's becasue you built the mega-creation they give you instructions for using the parts from 15 sets. A game will only become pointless upon beating it if beating it is the point. With civilization, the entire point of the game is to win. You accomplish that goal, and nothing else matters. The production of your favorite city only served to advance your civilization to victory. Your military only existed to defend you civilization and kill the others. Once the goal is reached, nothing has any intrinsic value.
In minecraft, winning the game is not the point. Its something you can try to do, and may very well require a significant investment of time and energy, but it is not the point. If you couldn't see a point to minecraft beyond beating the game, you wouldn't be playing it now.
So Notch wants Terraria inspired bosses? Has he finally run out of his brilliant ideas? I do wonder how Mojang would pull that off. It would definitely be different in a 3D environment. It better have awesome boss music.
the fun of minecraft is having no rules no limits no bounderys to be free to do what ever you want i like that kind of game RPGs suck!!!! ok there are a couple good RPGs but if you ask me minecraft should stay sand box
And there you have it, that is a very important thing to realize. But when the term 'winning' comes into life, a new psychology is in place (not talking about Charlie Sheen.) It sets a complete new goal. Winning was never an issue in Minecraft. Now that it will be an ingredientof the game, I think (and this is purely based on self-reflection) I want to 'win' it. And I hope I will be able to ignore the win-factor and just go build myself a [fill in yourself to set your own goal]...
Maybe that's the issue: it sets a goal for you. While the really big strength of the game is to set your own goals. Which is also my objection against XP's/levelling. This game doesn't set any objectives for you, you have to do that yourself!
Thats exactly it; any difference is purely in your mind. If I say "Do whatever you want", or "Do whatever you want, perhaps go outside and play", there is no difference in the mandate, but one comes with a suggestion of what you can do. If you are playing happily with blocks and build whatever you please, and somebody else comes along and says "It would be really cool if you made the Sydney Opera House!", you could decide that would be fun and do it, or you could ignore them, but they in no way have limited what you could do. In fact, if they came in with some special blocks designed to make the Sydney Opera House, they have now expanded your options, since you can use those peices in other ways.
People make their own goals in games with explicit goals all the time. I mean, look at GTA. I mostly see people doing whatever they feel like in it, despite it having a specific goal and storyline.
If you can't operate free-form in an enviroment with a goal, the problem is not with the game.
The games that defined the concept of "sandbox" had conditions for winning and it didn't reduce their sandbox nature; they still exemplified the concept to the point that they are still what most gamers think of when you say "sandbox game".
Yes there's psychology behind "winning", but I don't see it detracting from Minecraft at all, only adding for those who do want to feel like they have a purpose beyond whatever they decide to do that day. And I myself have occasionally said while playing one of these sandbox games "Hey, for a lark, why don't I make some progress on the long term goals the game has set out for me?" I think I would enjoy doing the same thing in Minecraft.
In the end, it would just be another thing you could do in the game.
I can live with that. I'll totally ignore that (I haven't completed the 1000m railway yet, I totally don't care...)
The only reason I don't have the "On a Rail" achievement is because the railway I'm building anyway isn't that long yet. Heh. Of course now I have to wait until 1.8 before I explore any new areas, though. Good thing I have a lot of building projects and a ginormous cave to finish exploring.
But I think the issue is bigger than that. There is a 'winning' issue going on with the game. I am very curious what's it going to be...
Can anyone tell us a detailed time n' date for the adventure update's release!
cuz i go open my launcher at least 8 times a day to see!
and 4 more times to play!
and it's just pissing me off!
I love all the new features and such that will come out but in a way it will take away from what minecraft is in my opinion. If they add a button to turn adventure mode on and off however, i will be very happy! Anyone agree?
Hey guys. I had a crazy thought. As the title implies, my thought was 'Spiked Pistons'. Since I do believe a new spike block is being made for Update 1.8, I thought you could add a crafting recipe that would be just like the Sticky Piston. It would feature a normal piston in one 1x1 grid piece, with a spike block on top of it, or 1-2 iron ingots above the piston in a crafting grid. This would provide a whole new way to create adventures, defenses, obstacle courses, hounted houses, you name it! It would also provide us "Redstone Fanatics" with another way to make new awesome and complicated contraptions! Thanks for reading. This is just a suggestion, but I really hope it is considered. Thanks again! :laugh.gif:

Why don't you just not go exploring for caverns/dungeons, not kill creatures, and not use the new food? Bam, you can ignore adventures.
I think that this update will be released in late September or early October. Many people think it will be on early Sept. ,but after PAX, notch's suggestions and reviews will give him more things to work on this 1.8 update. I dont wanna play Minecraft during the school year :sad.gif: sucks. Wish it would just be on August
But it does say "Press 'I' to open your inventory!".

Indeed!
I wonder if the bosses will just... catch on fire if you use flint n' steel, cheap but effective.

You could just ignore the "special armor" thing, and make the goal to collect the 15 orbs scattered across the world
cuz i go open my launcher at least 8 times a day to see!

There's no official date for the update yet. If there were, it would be in the OP.
Since the update is going to be available to play at PAX, it's certainly not going to be ready until September, at the earliest.
I sure do!
