So the last big annoying omgsomuchglass project we've done on our server is a pigmen trap. Essentially, it's a zig-zag of rail tracks that tours you to 50% of the floor of a big cube. The other 50% of the horizontal plane is covered in stairs to prevent the items from falling onto the track, causing your cart to freeze. Vertically, there are 25 layers of preventative glass (so the pigmen don't clip anything or fall into the wrong rows) and above that, are spawning pads. The surrounding areas are slabbed up to prevent spawns, and the air is cluttered with floating blocks to reduce ghast spawns. Magma cubes seem to be unavoidable.
Anywho, pretty standard idea, nothing to special (except the horrible size we decided on)
Unfortunately, once 12w04 hit, the pigmen started to realize that signs were not a block and have now stopped walking off their pads. Although this is still a work in progress, we're losing steam quickly because we haven't been able to think of an alternative. I've just now tried using lava are you would use water in a mob tower. Each pad is now 2x higher so there is a layer for the signs and a layer for the lava. Unfortunately, they don't seem to think lava is safe either. Any ideas? Pistons are not an option. Not with this design anyway. The point of this is to safely AFK and pick up nuggets. Adding an enormous amount of pistons would kill our item supplies and cause a huge deal of lag, as well as give us a nightmare of work to do. We're debating between scrapping the project all together, or reducing the spawn pads to 1 area so they hopefully spawn so frequently they overcrowd and bump each other off.
Balls. I saw a few jump in the lava and was extremely hopeful. Apparently they float in lava! Weeee that was a waste of time.
Ah hah. Thanks for the excellent link. Unfortunately this will require a new build, as it doesn't solve the issue with our current trap. It was a lot of glass :/

Lolwut? Are you talking about slimes? Because in my game, they die (or "split") almost immediately in lava.
Maybe the version you're playing on (probably an older one for the server) has a slime bug that is fixed now.
Hrmm. I don't know what/ to comment on first. The fact that you're assuming my server runs on some old version, or the fact that you ignored the fact that this thread is about pigmen and I'm obviously speaking about them.
EDIT: Or your avatar...

I wasn't insulting you. Almost everyone who runs a server, runs it on the official patches instead of the snapshots, because they're MUCH more stable. If you WERE running on snapshots, I'd be very surprised.
And you called zombie Pigmen "balls" who "jump". Slimes are balls who jump.

He was using balls as a negative colloquialism, not a descriptor, like "crap" or 'holy shnikes." I'd presume you were being facetious but I've seen odder comments from you, no offense.

Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.

LOL, I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
Anyway, I didn't understand that he was using the Yogscast "balls!" colloquialism, sorry.
Balls is more often used as a euphemism for testes where I'm from, and I don't associate Pigmen with testes.
Have you tried setting up dispensers with arrows linked to pressure plates, shooting pigmen off the edge? It would have to be a small edge for it to work.

I've been a Minecraft player since Beta 1.7, still my favorite game!

You don't want screenshots. lol. It's a mess of glass. Do opened fences close on block updates? How about open trapdoors? Will try both of these things later. I assumed they were changed along with signs in 12w04.
I was using balls as a "negative colloquialism," yes. You should've at least assumed I was talking about magma cubes, as this is a thread about pigmen.
PS Whether or not you misunderstood my sentence, it's still rude of you to not read the post before commenting. The main point of this topic is snapshot 12w04 changing the way mobs recognize fences, so there is no reason for you to think I'm running on 1.1

Docm showed off a nice implementation:
