Im trying to find a decent world with some nice mountain vistas to start a new survival map.
Mountains seem to be "broken" though. Most are in impossible shapes, with floating bits all around them; or they are cut in half with structures that look similar to chunk errors (though im certain its not a chunk error).
After creating 100s of worlds today and yesterday, it seems its related to rivers somewhat. When a river is inserted in/near a mountain, the mountain is carved in half, with an unnatural shape. Another explanation could be that what im seeing are actually ravines being generated above the 64 block level.
No, its not erosion. haha. Cute that you think it is though.
The terrain generation is bugged, resulting in abnormally shaped mountain ranges.
I think they were fine as recent as 1.0, but i can't remember.
You're absolutely correct. Mountains are bugged. The floating bits, massive overhangs and weird carve-outs don't resemble erosion at all.
The hilly terrain of the forest and ice biomes is usually OK. But mountains are almost always messy and weird. I had some nice mountains in a (beta) 1.9 pre-release (#4 I think) world. I haven't seen any that were quite right since then.
Its because Jeb tried to force maps to all be glacier, instead of unique landforms we get forced stuff.
To be fair, Notch implemented the new biome code a while back. Jeb has actually tried to remedy the issue somewhat, with hilly sub-biomes in several of the non-mountain biomes. You can see them in forests, jungles, taigas and deserts.
its obviously a predator missle...... joking its bugged land generation i believe it is from rivers and beachs trying to spawn next to them witch is cutting off the sides of other biomes i could be wrong... anyways cya fallow miners lolz :biggrin.gif:
I just thought they were cliff faces. I have some lovely mountains to work with, and they all look natural from erosion (including the cliffs, which is a totally natural process of erosion).

I've created ~200 world so far today and yesterday, and every single mountain range contains bizarre shapes more suitable for a Yes album cover than terrain in minecraft.
At any rate, im not here to debate whether or not mountain generation is bugged. It clearly is.
I just want to know what version of minecraft this started happening so I can go back to that version until its fixed.
I'm with you there; the more people request specific attributes in biomes, the less randomness we'll see.
Adding specific atributes to a biome makes the biome to be generated with certain patterns. Those patterns will be predictable and mountains "would look" the same, ergo, people will start sayin´ "MOUNTAINS ARE BORIG!! DERP"...
I agree mountains looks weird and need a fix, but honestly i prefer overhands and strange caves that those massivehilly mountains. They look like an enourmous grass hill, not like a mountain.

I wasn't really talking about mountains there, just biomes in general.
I much prefer steep cliffs, overhangs, arches and spires to rolling hilly mountains, though. I'm not playing Minecraft for realism.
There is a reason Mojang marketed them as 'Extreme Mountain Biomes'. It would be weird having a simply hilly biome. They went out of their way to make the mountains like that . . . but the floating stuff probably wasn't intentional.

This is funny. You guys must not be American... or worse: the product of American public schools.
Aside from the floating bits (which players generally regard to be awesome), erosion can make weird shapes. American southwest, anyone? Australia? Glacial formations in the northern ice caps?

As for me, I miss the 1.7.3 and before terrain generation when it comes to mountains and such. Some of the vistas were quite awesome, even with oddball floaters which I considered unique. Now the generation seems generally generic.
I don't think this is a bug, I think this is just a feature that the OP has a problem with. Like how swamps are technically not bugged, even though they're ugly as all hell. When I look at Minecraft mountains, I don't think "bugged", I think "mountain biome", because that's what Mojang wanted mountain biomes to be like. Full of sheer cliffs, extreme overhangs and huge caves. In fact, it's not too dissimilar from certain locations on Earth. I agree that it is a bit strange, but I don't think it's a mistake.
Ya know maybe it's just me but I love the impossible mountain forms. I lol when I see a huge hole (not a ravine a circular hole at the bottom of a mountain) and just awe at it. I like building my base close to things like that because one of my very first worlds was like that. I love walking around and seeing some impossibly funny things the terrain generation gives us.

Does anyone know offhand what version this began?
EDIT: Im using the latest 1.2 snapshot
Because that is what these terrain features. emulate.

If it was a world without central gravity you could have such a thing.
