I agree all the way. I always complained about this when I first played minecraft, and I couldn't see why they wouldn't add new ores or why people didn't agree.
I think they should turn iron into copper, and then add iron after, then ruby, then sapphire, then emerald, then diamond.
What they should also do is add copper: a mineral that is between stone and iron. 4 copper around 1 iron would make bronze, which is stronger than ruby but as durable as iron. It should take 4 copper because copper will be very common.
I agree with everyone saying that copper should be added. Not just as a new step between stone and iron, but also because of all the different new things that could be added with copper. Also, having a set of armor that came before iron would be nice. Does anyone find getting leather armor to be easier than iron?
Cows are kind of rare and you have to kill alot of cows to get enough leather for armour. I think what Mojang should do is make rotten flesh be smeltable into leather, and make cows drop more leather. Leather is an incredibly weak armour that hardly anybody ever uses, so it should be very common and easy to get. Bad protection is better than none!
maybe we can have platinum, bronze and copper added to the game only that...
The different kinds of ores should have different effects so that the other ores wouldn't get left behind
At first I was thinking, we have enough ores, but then I remembered why I started playing the game(and yes they should have different uses):
I was bored, couldn't find a game to play.
I was like, "Hey! Mining games are fun! Maybe I should play one of those 2D games with the little drill car."
I remembered hearing about Minecraft, from the name I thought it was a stupid flash game on some dumb 'play while you are at school or work' website.
The point I'm saying that is because, I found the ghetto 2D games fun with their many times of colorful ores. Mmmm, what's this one do! What's that one do! My problem is that no one has good reasons as to why we should add them. Lazuli and redstone confused me to bits when I first started. Had no idea what their purpose was.
Hell, even diamond doesn't last long enough. Well, the pick does, but the sword/armor don't. Maybe we could have steel last longer but be less effective then diamond?
Also, like blue said, maybe a new ore should be for something different. Just think about how coal and lazuli work. Then again, if we're talking about gaps, my suggestion for steel would be nice. :biggrin.gif:
haha you're funny
Pick runs out really damn quickly if you're strip/branch mining. Swords actually last for a long time and will take you quite a few minecraft days to wear through one. And armor got a massive buff, so what are you talking about? You can run through a bloody minefield and still be in one piece.
To the actual question, no new ores the gap is perfectly fine kthxbye
Adding copper and zinc which you have to craft into bronze to make tools with would add a nice change to the simple "mine ore, smelt, done" mechanic of all the other tool materials, tho.
I was thinking, where would zinc deposits be? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc#Occurrence
This says it's usually already mixed with metals (copper).
Maybe they spawn next to each other?? but that would make it too easy.
No, because if you actually concentrate on what they break, they are no different. Iron picks can mine everything except for obsidian. Diamond also can mine everything but also has the luxury of mining obsidian. So there would be absolutely no point in making tools in-between. The same thing applies to stone and iron swords. On all mobs (except for zombies) iron swords and stone sword take the same number of hits to kill. The only difference is that it takes 5 hits to kill a zombie with a stone sword, and 4 hits to kill a zombie with an iron sword.
I think a nice way to fill the gap would be to somehow introduce steel into the mix. It'd be made out of iron, so iron wouldn't become obsolete, and it would provide a stepping stone between iron and diamond.
Maybe this combination for creating steel:
Cause coal has got carbon in it and carbon makes iron stronger

I was purely talking about duration, not defense. lol
Also: considering picks get an endurance enchant and armor doesn't, that makes a huge difference. One time I almost dug out an entire chunk with an endurance III diamond pick.(dug out a chunk with 3-tall rooms)

Umm... wait, doesn't that make brass?
Copper+Zinc=Brass
Copper+Tin=Bronze

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
Silver is only slightly more durable than gold in reality. And considering that one gold pick has about 30 durability.. Silver would only have 100 max. Making it useless for the purposes of this thread.
I think that copper is a good idea, except that it's malleable. It's used for wiring and whatnot. Iron and steel on the other hand are only malleable when it's really really hot, or molten. Copper wouldn't make sense, imo. I like the idea of more gems to use. Rubies would clash with redstone in my mind, as both would be red and ore-like. Sapphires are a good idea too, but they look like lapis. (-.-) Diamonds used to be called emeralds, so bleh.
Maybe Amethyst? It would look like redstone/diamond/coal ores, but be a nice deep purple colour. And it would fit right in the middle between iron and diamond, at about 600 durability. It would also have a higher enchantability than iron, because well.. it's a gem. Though, considering how amethysts form naturally, there could be a new ore look for them. Regular stone around the edge, and then a jagged purple circle in the middle. Link: Pretty stone
I'm in if they will add new ores. If they didn't add new ores because of the space needed, once Jeb increase map height, there will be more space for new ores.
If they do want some variety, a simple way is to allow alloys, but implemented in such a way that we can combine, say Cobblestone and Iron to make Hard Iron or something. Of course, you can't just smack them into the crafting table to make them; you would probably need a special tool or entity block that lets you do that.
This really is a tough deal. I mean, once you get plenty of diamonds, you really don't have to use iron if you don't want, and you have the option of enchanting, and even small enchants can do wonders on tools for durability. As far as copper, I see it in the other uses, not tools, iron is better than everything except steel.
If you wanted to craft steel I say just make it cost like 3 iron and 6 coal or something if you want it to be in between iron and diamond. It would be strictly for durability, nothing special about it, except it would cost you, but since iron and coal are abundant, no biggie.
I don't really have a problem with it the way it is now, I still use more iron than I do diamonds just because I'm paranoid. We have like 384 blocks of iron and 20 blocks of diamonds, just doesn't make since to use up the diamonds too fast.

I'd like to see something like this implemented.
Personally, I'd also like to see obsidian and perhaps the new steel smelted together to create a third tier of Grey Steel, or perhaps... Cold Forged Steel?
Either way I would like to see more uses for Obsidian; and a stop-gap tool material with perhaps ... 800 durability? would be a nice niche for it. It can be farmed; as long as diamond level has been achieved, but would require iron still so it wouldn't be a 'free' resource.

Since no one addressed this: no, they mean copper. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin and isn't an ore in and of itself.

That really sounds good, I agree fully.
