If they truly were constantly trying to please us, they wouldn't leave us hanging with things such as unfinished villagers, and they wouldn't add extremely game changing features such as hunger, new bow mechanics, animals not respawning as quickly, etc.
It might seem really stupid to say this because its taking the blame from us to them, but really, they're adults. They have a level of intelligence, and probably aren't too influencable. We aren't CONTROLLING them, and I'm sure they wouldn't make the game shittier than it could be just because we want updates. Or maybe they knew that if they did these things, they would make lots of money, and then not have to care what the masses think.
And @ everyone in this thread: Modders usually work faster because they have more spare time (sometimes don't have lives), aren't as lazy, and/or are more efficient. Notch has a family of his own, and also takes frequent vacations, but most modders don't.
And what part of Minecraft isn't finished? How is the NPC's incomplete? Answer that.
Explain how we rushed him. Customers want more and more. That's the nature of the beast. That's how humans are. Notch wasn't ready for it and that's his fault.
But it's not the nature of the beast to stomp all over a product and condemn it.
OT: I agree with the OP, at least until the full release rolled around. I agree fully with the musings about how Notch was rushed pre-release, particularly because of how the community is a gigantic behemoth type who can't stand a wait exceeding a week. Notch tried to add some interesting stuff for 1.8; the community drove him into the ground with complaints about the length between updates. Notch releases the first half of the update and it promptly gets stomped on by the writhing mass of its own community. they complain and Notch feels more pressure to gain the people's trust again. He tries to add more features, tries to spoon feed the monster to keep it quiet for a moment, but it isn't long before the beast yells and complains again, stomping its feet and shoutIng about how the game isn't what THEY wanted it to be.
So we get a whole bunch of incomplete features at the tail end of 1.8 because you all wouldn't shut up about how every update is crap or taking too long. It's a vicious cycle that was repeated many times even before the 1.8 update. I sort of see 1.8 as the death of the Minecraft community, the event that sent these once-peaceful forums into a bloodbath. It's a shame, really.
But the 1.8 update is also where my defense of Notch ends, at least in he context of this argument. It was plain idiotic to set a release date at such an unreasonable date, and idiotic still to procrastinate until a few weeks before said date. There's no ground to fault the community here, as I understand many tried to dissuade Notch about the release, but by then it was too late as bookings had been made, etc.
So I didn't vote, OP. And I don't think I will. I'm more sad to see such a bitter hated spreading across the forums over subjects such as this, and where people can't accept that they have to take at least SOME of the lame for what happens to a product they can directly influence.
And what part of Minecraft isn't finished? How is the NPC's incomplete? Answer that.
You're going to get ripped apart for this, my friend. I might at least try to be civil. Many see the NPCs as incomplete (me included) because Notch promised interactions with them via trade, quests, etc. Obviously, this is not what we got and most are frustrated and even angry.
Just because I respect mojang doesn't mean I will automatically hate on a person's views if they disagree with my views. If you want other people to respond to you calmly, then speak logically. It's better than flaming "X suxz!" on either side of the argument.
You know what's really sad, is that even if we gave them constructive criticism on the forums, it would still be a very longshot to even get their attention.
But that also means this:
What makes you think they look at the forums? They almost don't. So what makes you think they know that we have been complaining?
They had rushed to get even 1.8 done. 1.8 was full of bugs. It was one of the only major versions that only had one bugfix, and it wasn't even really a bugfix. 1.8 Prerelease and 1.8.1. That was it. From what I heard, 1.8 Prerelease was supposably "leaked". Would it being "leaked" have contributed to Mojang's rush to get 1.8 officially out? Maybe, just maybe, Notch released the game way too early because he wanted it to be 11/11/11, and even though Bethesda forced him to put it on another day -- and that means he could have worked on the full release for even a few more months -- he didn't want to upset the community. That was one of his mistakes, to try to get the game done by 11/11/11. What I realize is that there wasn't a true deadline to the release of Minecraft. It could have been in 2012, maybe it would have been better if it was.
All we can hope for is that Jens does not make the same mistakes Notch did. If there is one thing that needs rushing is the current bugs. A rule that every developer should follow is "Don't try to add new content if the old content isn't done."
PS: I try my best not be biased in my post, but it just leads to me contradicting myself...
OP: Could you please add an option for "I like all the updates"? Seriously, I've liked every new feature in the adventure update, even if some of them need a bit of polishing.
I don't really agree with this topic. It keeps on referring to "we", as though every member of the Minecraft community demanded that Mojang should release a Patch early and that we don't like the new updates. Also, you say with absolute certainty that Minecraft would be miles better if Mojang didn't release 1.7 or 1.8 before Minecon. How can you know this? And even if you did know what Minecraft would be like in this alternate reality, how would you define 'better'? It's subjective whether that version of Minecraft would be better than this current one.
Personally, I'm glad that Mojang released 1.7 and 1.8 early. Pistons kept a lot of people playing and, with 1.8, I feel that Jeb_ and Notch weren't polishing off or completing some of the new features because they didn't have a deadline. It seems that the only reason why they didn't complete them after the decision to release prereleases was because they seemed to be adding other new features as the Minecon deadline loomed and didn't have time to fix old ones. Anyway, you act as though Mojang released these patches earlier solely because of the community, which I very much doubt.
I appreciate your opinion though. It is well thought out and well structured, from my experience a rare occurrence in 1.0 Update Discussion.
And what part of Minecraft isn't finished? How is the NPC's incomplete? Answer that.
Sure I will. VIllagers are pointless and villages can spawn in the ocean or even on top of a ravine. Villagers still need the AI done for them so people actully want to look for them. Modding help is still being worked on. there still updating minecraft in case you haven't noticed. Once the new AI guy comes in doing this will take a while (I'm no programer so I don't know how long it will take)Not enough for you? To bad because I don't have anything else that I know of being wokedx on.
If i continue reading this **** my brain will explode and eyes will bleed.
Where the **** did you come from. None of them mods are made by more then four or five people. Mojang is over six and mods made by one work better, then mojangs whole minecraft. Stop being such a pathetic piece of fanboy. Don't you want to suck notches cock too ? If notch is so awesome, why did he abandon project that was not done. Jeb should be in lead since beginning. Things would turn out better.
18,558,513 Users ? You sir failed in your ****ing life. There are 4,367,543 who bought the game.
Get your facts straight before you post stupid **** such as this. You are fail of the nature.
I know, what part did I say that it wasn't? And I don't care about Notch, i care about people. :laugh.gif:
Hahaha, I actually like those quite a bit, I think it's a cool new option for building bridges and the like.
To all the people saying modders are way more efficient, keep in mind that they're building off of existing code, while mojang is coding from scratch. Personally I'm glad they worked on all these new elements rather than shitting around doing stuff that the community can easily do for it's self once mod support is set up. I kinda don't get what everyone's shitting their pants over, I like almost everything that's been added. Some stuff needs work obviously, and there are some things I'll likely have to work on for myself, but overall I quite like all the new features.
Notch made a game that he himslef wanted according to his own standards. Other people wanted a slightly different game. Suddenly, Notch was wrong. WUT
You could use this same argument here to make hitler look good. Notch made a lot of promises to players he didnt keep. THAT is what people are upset about.
Deadlines, timeframes for content that notch gave to himself were rarely kept. He openly admits to being a big procrastinator and putting off his projects until the last minute. Usually something hobbled together last minute was all you could come to expect.
As well as bug fixes, he made claims to fix 'x' problem in patch 'y'. Patch comes, bug is still there.
Everyone "gets it" that notch/mojang are human, but when you tell people you are going to do something, and then dont do it then yes, notch is wrong. This hasn't been a one time thing, its come to be expected.
Good job, OP. First sensible thing I've read on these forums in awhile.
To the Nimesia guy: Just ****ing stop it already. You're not doing anything spectatcular, you're creating a Minecraft clone. There are already plenty of them out there so you're not some sort of visionary. Yea, it would be great if all the whiners would just go make their own game the way you're doing. But now that you're making your own game how about you quit with all the pointless bitching? Before you even try it, no, you do not give constructive criticism, you just ***** and moan and try to make your game seem soooo much better. Just ****ing stop.
Indeed he fixes the bugs. Yup. Some vanilla items are banned on my server, because they can be used to dupe items. And that's good bugfixing?
I liked Minecraft at first. As everything becomes boring over time, Minecraft does as well. Unluckily Notch didn't do anything to prevent it. Big, game-changing and concentrated (one system developed well instead of a bunch of unrelated things) updates would be enough. 1.0.0. Make potions, enchant your gear, kill the Ender Dragon. The process is so boring that it's a pain to repeat it. In Minecraft, things should be fun for multiple times. Hell, even for the first time.
18 million? What the hell? 4 million, says the main page. By the way, most of them are small kids who cannot write mods on their own. Additionally, mods are also created by a single person or group of 2 to 10 people, rarely more. Your comparison is invalid!
Why do you insult me? Anyway, he didn't invent Minecraft on his own. Have you heard about Infiminer? Yeah... Minecraft is just another version of it. However, I think he had a nice idea. Too bad it was in his hands. Do you know what we could have had?
Giving people the ability to make the game fun for free is rather profitable, don't you think? People are doing the things which Notch should have done.
Stop insulting me.
I lol'd here. Without mods, Minecraft is a piece of crap.
I actually work hard on my game.
I know why he was smiling. Because he had all those demands between his butts.
Continue to develop the game for them? LOL.
Simple, boring, plain. Ruined potential.
Lol, limitations? Is laziness a limitation? No, it's a thing you should overcome if you want to be successful.
And do you sit on the forums just to defend Notch?
They won't listen to suggestions. Posting new ones is senseless, as people have already suggested them and we haven't received any of them.
dont worry, Mojang does look at our suggestions and consider it, many suggestions on getsatisfaction.com has been planned on and added, sorry for insulting you, whenever i get into "type what my soul says" form, i tend to overdo it...happy new year :wink.gif:
I made the last option on the poll as a joke, I actually laughed my ass of to see there are people here who don't play the game :smile.gif:
Anyways, I'm just gonna lay down some counter-arguments to save space:
1.) Notch is lazy: If he were lazy, he wouldn't have made minecraft, or at least update it.
2.) Without mods, minecraft is a piece of crap: Then why play it if it needs mods to be good?
3.) Only 4 million play the game out of 18 million users: Cracked launchers exist.
4.) Notch made a bunch of promises he didn't keep: What, like "minecraft 2"? Those are all rumors, notch saying he likes the ideas and MAY want to implement them, he/the community/other mojangstas didn't like the idea anymore, or he realized it wouldn't work in the game.
5.) We aren't pressuring him, he's just lazy: One, notch is a game programmer at mojang, he has other games to work on besides minecraft. Two, "Me and my friends are gonna stop playing minecraft if you don't -insert stupid request here-" isn't pressuring?
6.)Bug fixes he didn't do: Buddy, he made 1.6 all about bug fixes, as well as spending the last month of beta doing bug fixes.
7.) "-insert minecraft clone- is waaaay better than minecraft because of -X-":As a guy who is making a clone, I will ADMIT that I hope my clone will be as good as minecraft when released. However, I know that this is merely a fantasy as the game was made by an already popular game developer, and any clone won't have the same feeling of originality to the game that minecraft does because of this simple fact: it has been done before.
8.)Notch needs to continue working on the game like he use to with weekly updates: That will never happen, sadly. Remember, just because it is his job to make games doesn't mean he has to work 24/7 on those games. He has a wife and a life like most of us, after all!
9.) "I actually work hard on my game(s)": And that is good for you! So do Notch, Jens, Aron, Jahkob, Daniel Kaplan and Jon.
10.) Minecraft is simple, boring and plain. Ruined potential: Once more, don't like it? Don't play it. It seems pointless to discuss a game if you don't like it. The game has a lot of potential to do whatever you want, except simulate the collision of two galaxies.
As a personal note to the nimesia guy ripping on minecraft being unoriginal, you are LITERALLY ripping off Minecraft by taking its good parts, notch added many features that are not present in infiniminer. What you are doing is shady, its stealing notch's creations. At least I try to avoid things notch added as much as possible while working on my spin-off. I read your wiki, you literally took the nether, renamed it, had a portal to it made of a "Dark frame", and renamed the blocks. Seriously? "Soulstone", "Soulsoil"? At least I come up with original blocks, like "cybus cube" and "yellow cake ore(uranium)". Also, do not hate the game that gave you inspiration, like when you were ripping on it in your games description.
I read your wiki, you literally took the nether, renamed it, had a portal to it made of a "Dark frame", and renamed the blocks. Seriously? "Soulstone", "Soulsoil"?
You think that's bad? Check out their forums for a list of ores and alloys that will be featured. The strongest allow in Nimesia is, I kid you not, "Ultimium Ingot - an alloy which is very hard to create. Impossibly strong."
I mean, I guess they didn't rip that name off from anywhere, but it's just incredibly lazy.
@Netherspawn yellow cake is a material from which uranium is extracted from, look it up. Also this thread is for MINECRAFT, not nimesia. I'd continue this, but Im typing on my iPhone, so typing is difficult at the moment.
Thank you Netherspawn! But your audience is in another game!
Anyways, with your perspective and idea of design, getting this game off the ground will be a living hell, and getting further than that will be even harder. Hate for a game won't fuel you enough to get this game off the ground. Oh, and you plan to pursue the creative aspect, and yet you plan to substitute enchantments with various types of loot? Hypocrisy at its finest.
That being said, I appreciate the fact that you're actually taking action by yourself instead of just sitting here and whining like an idiot about this game's direction.
But advertise about this game elsewhere, okay?
