This means you can even sleep in a meadow out in the open!
I think it was a mistake to make that change to beds, as originally, it required that you put at least a little effort into building a secure area for your bed.

I think they changed it because sometimes monsters still spawned in-house even if the ground is not dirt and was lighted up, it happened to me a couple times. It does kind of kill the shelter aspect though.
My house is surrounded by a barrier and i covered every grass block inside the barrier with a half block / mobs cant spawn in half blocks /, so no monster will spawn , only 50 blocks away me, YAY FOR ME!

Yeah, sometimes even on a fully lit room the mobs still had a chance to spawn next to you and pwn u when ur sleep.

You could always just build a small hole and cover it with the dirt you just dug out of it, this changes very little in reality. Also, if you don't like the change, don't use a bed without a house first?
Beds are bad overall. They should allow you to skip only 6 hours, not the whole night. They ruin the challenge.
Minecraft has never been challenging, as such beds didn't take away anything. Prior to beds you just dug a hole and sat in it for 10 minutes or mined underground in your perfectly safe mine tunnel. Also, if you don't like beds don't use beds - no ones forcing you too, unless you have extremely poor self control and need an outside source to prevent you from doing something.
To complain about a feature that 100% optional even to the point of never having to make it to begin with is just pointless. There are valid concerns when it comes to Minecrafts difficulty (such as mobs hitting like a wet noodle) but this is not one of them.

I don't really understand the point you are trying to make. What I was trying to say is that I think beds should be allowed, and are a good addition to Minecraft, but there should be some balance to using beds, and the risk of being awakened by a hostile mob actually provided a pretty decent balance.
Nah, creepers were unable to spawn. Only skeletons and zombies could do so.
Yeah, let's give a 75% of creeper nightmare - a creeper wakes you up!
I guess the correct fix for that issue is to make them spawn only if theres a dark spot (light level required for mob spawning) and not let them spawn when i had my room perfectly lit... plus being woken up was a pain in the butt...
I don't know how many actual bugs remained, but I actually found the old system easier. As long as you didn't use iron double doors or placed the bed next to an outside wall everything seemed fine to me.
Then you are one of the lucky ones. I had plenty of instances where I made my bedroom with no double doors, no bed next to the wall, no grass floor, everything lit bright enough that mobs shouldn't be able to spawn... and I would still get attacked by mobs 3/4 of the time I tried to sleep. This wouldn't happen with every bed in every house, but it definitely seemed like there was some bug that would occur if you just placed the bed in the "wrong" sort of area (though I was never able to figure out what made those areas problematic).
The fact that it now just does a distance check to see how close mobs are seems like a much simpler way to do things, and simpler just means less chance of strange bugs occurring so I am totally in favor of that.
The change has affected me little if at all, because my bedroom is on the 2nd floor of my castle, that is sounded by lava, and an outer wall. That is ringed by 5 blocks of water. Torches fill in the gaps, making my monster spawn inside my city quite small. I have not seen darkness in months. Let alone had to sleep.
Does seem kinda silly to have to clear out the monsters near you, if you have built a shelter. But is it all that bad?

The first part of my point was nothing has changed, you could always dig a hole just big enough to put a bed in it and cover the top with the blocks you dug out. Instant house sufficient to give you mob immunity and the ability to sleep with no danger, so the same as it is now just without the 10 seconds of digging.
The second part is Minecraft is as balanced or imbalanced as you want it to be, 1.0 is no different then Alpha in this regard. Back then you could dig a hole and hide in it for 10 minutes until the sun came up (or mine in a well lit and thus totally danger free mining tunnel) if you wished, or you could chance roaming about outside. Now you can skip the night by sleeping, mining in a well lit tunnel, or chance going outside.
I like how it is now but if you go by what makes more sense the previous way did.
Yes, there's no mobs around me when I get in my bed but there's a good chance one will wander over to me a couple of 'hours' later.
I do like how I can keep my front door wide open now though. :wink.gif:
They should have just fixed the weird quirks with the old system. It makes no sense that you can clear an open area of monsters and somehow no other monsters ever bother you for the rest of the night.
There should be some kind of light level and pathing requirement (you don't need a roof but make sure your walls are spider-proof.)

The creeper thing was a joke... =P
And then your bed texture changes so that there is a pool of urine.

Now it's worse, you can just kill the nearby zombies and sleep in a dangerous area.
Plus it will never let you sleep if there's a cave below your house.
