The latest pre-release made it so that farmland is 100% protected now from mobs, animals, and yourself. I personally don't like the change, and think it is more dumbing down of an already easy game. While it's not a big change, it is still making it slightly easier to farm now. There is no longer any reason to protect your farms with walls/greenhouse since the ground stays tilled. Which also in turn makes the hoe more useless, the only time it will be used now is making new farmland not re-tilling old farmland.
Don't forget that animals can jump. Jumping still destroys the crops, doesn't it?
Anyway, the best option would be if animals could trample the crops and players couldn't unless they jumped.
The way I took it animals wont trample it at all, only if the player jumps will it destroy it but I could be wrong. Out of curiosity why do people like this change that are voting for it?
Personally, I keep starting a new game and I get tired of making a short wall around my crops, this makes it more on-the-fly farming. This reminds me of how you used to have to have a lot of squares by your bed open or else you wouldn't spawn back to it. Now you only need the block you slept from open by the bed. These 2 new implementations make my life easier and don't stomp on my regular challenges.
My parents own a farm.
When I walk around on it, the ground does not flatten and instantly kill the crops.
I thought it was pretty pointless before, and just a waste of time to make farmland disappear just by touching it with your pinky toe.
It's fine the way it is and YOU ALL are just being *way* too picky.

You sure they do? If you go out and smash down a crop with your foot by stepping on it, there is a very high possibility it will die. Or if not die, be a runt think about it(no sunlight from surrounding crops being higher and blocking the sun. Or if it is just starting to grow, something like a pumpkin/grape vine if you step on it that will damage the plant usually.

Except wheat is related to grass. If you haven't noticed, the wild form of both of those grow in large fields that cover the entire ground; the plants are naturally resistant to being trampled. Pumpkin vines are surprisingly resilient, too; very thick.
Plants are pretty resilient things in general; trees have natural suits of armor, so to speak, grasses are stepped on daily by pretty much every land-dwelling animal, most plants of a low height are designed not only to be able to resist having fecal matter dumped on them, but benefit from it, etc. I can guarantee a single human walking about (walking, mind you, not sprinting or dancing about like a maniac) in a wheat field may leave the wheat slightly flattened, showing a trail, but it's nothing the plant can't resist.

Animals spend MOST of their time jumping up and down, so yeah, the animals will crush your plants.
I grew up on a farm. It was silly in Minecraft that walking on your farmed land destroyed it. Now if a cow got in your garden, things got pretty messed up. But humans walking around in the garden did nothing at all to it. I even accidentally stepped on the occasional carrot now and then and it did only minor damage. And instead of harming the carrot's growth, it made the carrot go into hyper-growth mode, to fix its damage.
Herbs are a bit delicate, but then, we aren't farming herbs.
Some of the things that made or make Minecraft hard are not fun. This was one of the changes I like.
Another thing that destroys farmland is the growth of pumpkins and melons. Those things burn through hoes fairly quickly.
Frankly I think it's things like these that should be a "use" for experience. Get enough points, you spend 'em on a perk to stop yourself trampling. Get some more, you can prevent it on a world-wide basis.

You're just jealous 'cause the voices only talk to me
I love the change. It doesn't make the game easier in any major way, just less annoying. Plus, I really like the fact that I don't have to surround everything in fences anymore.

Think about it. Do you really actually think Minecraft is that sophisticated? It's not. It doesn't take into account the angle of the sun or the surrounding plants or the shadows or anything like that. Growth is simple. It is on a timer. You have to be in the vicinity for it to grow. simple things.
By the way, grapevines LOVE damage. They THRIVE on damage. You cut off a vine stem and it becomes three or four vine stems. Cut a vine stem off and stick the cut end into the dirt and you get a new vine. Don't EVER accuse a grapevine of having a sense of danger! :smile.gif:

Also, if I may... How do you step on a grapevine?
I agree... as to the grapvine question...very ,very, carefully.

Grapevines and pumpkins was a bad example lol, should have used something like corn/lettuce/tomatoes/cucumbers.
So yea, I suppose most of you are right about the realistic factor and considering the grow-able crops in the game. Most of the ones available are pretty resilient. I am just tired of the game getting easier and easier each patch, it is ridiculously easy to survive the way the game is now with food being abundant mobs not hurting at all hardly with armor, potions, enchanting, etc. Hardcore is almost pointless as it's getting to where it's actually hard to die anymore. Some things need major tweaking at least on the higher difficulty levels.
Also, if I may... How do you step on a grapevine?
I was more talking about while it's growing, not after grown so right as it goes from seed to poking out of the ground.

That would be a good use for experience, considering experience is pretty pointless other than using it for enchantments. They should add some kind of perk system, so agree with this +1!
But anyway that was really stupid. Just dumbing down things for noobs. Now you can just go crazy with the hoe and make a whole forest a farm... Overpowered much?
It gave more life to the world too. Argh. Why did they change something that was perfect?
Players shouldn't trample it, but mobs should. That's the main reason, if not the only reason players fenced their crops. I can already see players put animals and crops in the same place in order to save space. That's not that very appealing and it looked bad in Wurm Online.
I agree OP. It's a nerf to satisfy some noobs and it's a dumbing down of the game! Not a good move. Makes farm land far LESS sacred. You can just set up huge monolithic farms with no fencing, tons of area, ugly and unrealistic and too easy/simple. You are removing the engineering from "smart farms." Please don't put this nerf in Jeb!
