My thoughts, Enchanting should get the axe and alchemy needs an overhaul.
It takes minecraft in the wrong direction I think.
While it is a fantasy RPG type game, In Minecraft, I don't think magic really has a place beyond the unique abilities of the mobs. Any 'enchanting' in the game should come from crafting 'upgrades' from these monster drops, for example, a bone handle to increase the durability of your tools and weapons, using an ender pearl to craft a teleportation device, zombie leather patches to make your armor tougher after it is purified and cured through some crafting/forging scheme etc etc.
I like the idea of alchemy but not instant heal potions etc. its not 'Diablo' where you suck back pots and slaughter monsters willy-nilly.
Alchemy in minecraft should take the form of discovering/unlocking transmutation recipes or plans to build ever more complex multi-component devices like a machine to transmute coal/charcoal to diamond or clockwork people to take over specific tasks for the player.
Have that bound to the experience mechanic so fresh players can't just up and craft em and you cant craft dozens at a time.
Your thoughts ?

friend: "if this game came out when nintendo was popular it would still be stupid"
He just doesn't get it
I agree on the whole enchanting thing, I would have much preferred a system where I craft on enhancements instead of reciting silly spells.
For alchemy, I don't think it conflicts with Minecraft's whole "go out and gather ****, then make it into other ****" philosophy, although they do seem useless to me. The only times I can make use of them is when I deliberately put myself in a position where I would need them.

Minecraft doesn't have alchemy. If it WERE added, it would be kind of stupid, as being able to turn blocks into different kinds of blocks would cause some balance issues.
However, if you are talking about BREWING, then it isn't finished. There are still many things to be added in brewing before it is finished, as can be proven by the many unused potion effects programmed into the game.

In my opinion brewing is great. It basically is the same type of formula used in smelting, so honestly it fits in nicely. Enchanting is slightly different, but it still fits in rather well. The simple fact is though that Notch wanted it, we have it, and it is going to take way too much work to try to get Notch to get rid of it. It's in. It's gonna stay.
I don't think enchanting needs to be scrapped, it just needs an overhaul. Same thing with the alchemy system. I think the enchanting should be a simple menu that tells you what you can get at a certain level, then it will randomly pick from a list in a menu. Also the instant heal potions are fine (they aren't truly instant heal though) I think alchemy should be like the old cauldron system, but with a menu also.
nothing is wrong with enchantments,i like it the way it is.you already need diamonds+obsidian, thats 5 diamonds.
Dont like it?dont download, dont use, leave it for us who like it.
Its not alchemy, its potions.Making coal into diamonds?thats alchemy.
actually making coal into diamonds is science... if you apply enough heat and pressure to a carbon based object it will turn into diamond. maybe make new item combined from pistons and furnace, plus a TON of fuel to make diamond :laugh.gif:
Enchantment is completely worthless. For it to even to have a purpose all weapons and tools had to be downgraded from their original state. That is abso****inglutely retarded beyond belief.

Transmutation is not the only thing alchemists did.
They basically were experimental chemists that based their experiments on there theory magic existed and they tried to find it's source.
Alchemists discovered the elements in the periodic table while going through these experiments.
Potion making is basically the same thing as alchemy, experimenting with things you think will grant you power for various results

Yeah, craft item+level requirement would be cool for enchant and yes, potions are just toys and not life savers.

Sorry, you lost me there. Your opinion is your opinion, but Minecraft has no proper "direction". Not only is the game a sandbox, it's being developed in a sandbox fasion - without a proper end goal. If Notch or Jeb wants to add something, then they will. There are no guidelines as to what Minecraft is or should be.
As per topic, they both can use an overhaul but as of right now, neither are necessary or required parts of the game. They're just there. Take it or leave it.
Then the funny thing is that they were only secondarily made to be magical things. Like, I believe Mojang didn't introduce them with the intention of them being specifically a 'LET'S ADD SOMETHING MAGICAL IN'.
No, they're end-game rewards for different aspects of Minecraft gameplay that were never rewarded before. NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THAT.
But the enchantments are weird.
BTW, Notch loves fantasy RPGs, I wouldn't be surprised if he wants Minecraft to be that way.
Like I have said before in previous posts they should change the Enchanting system to where you have to purchase your level 1 enchants from the NPC villiages thus giving them a reason to even exist and you can buy some of your potion makeing stuff from them as well. And you have to find the higher level enchants from dungons and Strongholds. This system would let you add enchants to your table by keeping them on a pice of paper. You could also duplicate them somehow maybe by making a book of enchants and using the books in the enchant table. There is a whole host of stuff that could be done.
I personally like the idea of having to make enchant tombs and then using them to enchant things that use experiance points. Thus the experiance system is retained and there is a biger use for books and NPC's

I was originally excited for the enchantment system, and the whole levels and experience system when it was being developed. However, i was a little disappointed. What i was expecting from the Experience system was that you could improve aspects about your character, like in a RPG. Thats just my opinion on that though.
Now for the enchantment system... Im fine with having random enchantments and it costing experience, but what really turned me off was when i found out that once you enchant a item, you can not, what so ever, repair that item. Otherwise you remove the enchantment. So personally i dont feel its worth while to grind all that XP, just to make a sword with some high level enchantments that will eventually fall apart.. Let us repair enchanted equipment!!
I think they have just simply added two new dimensions to the game is all. Depending on the kind of server you play on, you can't get to doing these things well that quickly anyway, to me they are down the road parts of the game. Kinda like you are not going to have a full fledged farm with tons of food in a couple of days, you have to do a lot of mining and building and what not, if you want to be successful at it. So, instead of just collecting animals and resources to build, now you have to collect xp, and find new items that are not all that easy to get, at least not right away(nether wart for one). That is just how I see it, just another aspect of the game. I didn't even mess with enchants or potions until just last week, I have been playing for like 2 years, just thought it wasn't all that important yet. I'm sure glad I did though, it has been a lot of fun collection all the goodies you need for pots, and building xp farms everywhere on our server.
wow guys it isn't the 16th century here. maybe back then when you said alchemy people would get confused, but im pretty sure most people know what we're talking about when we say alchemy.

Leave them as it is but add more potions, and maybe actually KNOW what you are going to enchant you item with, instead of luck
