Seriously I don't mean to swear to pad out my comments but why the **** would they think this was a good idea?
I think I can answer this: the change fixes the double door glitch. Before, it was hard for the game to tell when double doors were closed and when they were open. It generally got the right door wrong, and for monster spawning purposes, treated it as open when it was closed and vice-versa.
Now, by making double doors a single unit, like a double chest, they have solved this problem. The doors only count as open and allow monsters to spawn near you when they are actually open.
Not many people seem to have known about this bug before. Often, here on the forum, the strange monster appearances were attributed to irrelevant causes like putting a bed next to a wall (which, in actuality, doesn't matter a bit). I suspect this lack of awareness is why nobody has mentioned it in this thread yet.

I'm supporting this cool indie comic. Take a look:
I've personally had few problems with this, and assumed it to be a feature. It's very nice to be able to open both doors quickly. However, I have noticed that block updates will cause the right door to open, but this is generally not a problem.
A note about how the new doors work:
The new system is a bit counter-intuitive at first. But this might help some people understand it better.
Before, there were four arangements of two doors: open-open, open-closed, closed-open, and closed-closed. Mojang has changed it so that now there are only three. From the outside of a double door (this is reversed from the inside, obviously) the door can only be open-open, open-closed, and closed-closed.
For opening and closing doors this has the following implications:
-If both doors are closed, no matter which you click, the left one is going to open.
-If both doors are open, no matter which you click, the right one is going to close.
-If the doors are open-closed the door will work just as it used to.
(And again, before contradicting me, remember that this will be reversed if you are inside the doors.)
But is this a glitch?
No. As I've shown, the behavior is orderly not random, and it makes sense. This is good evidence that it was an intended feature. The update notes also support this. The new door behavior is a feature.
This makes no sense! Why add this bizarre feature?
It simultaneously solves two problems. First, it fixes the double door glitch (see my previous post) which was excessively annoying to those who suffered from it. Second, it allows for double doors to be opened all at once--a feature people had asked for--without eliminating the ability to just open such a door half way.

The feature is that BOTH doors are supposed to open when you hit the left one.
However, I guess it is just a bug right now and will be fixed very soon.
this was my understanding of it as well. I really hope they fix it to work this way in the future.
and to the guy asking why bother with double doors. it's usually for aesthetics or symmetry. I really can't stand having a door off-center if it is unjustified by the contents of the room. O.C.D. in action.
If it worked RIGHT, I'd say it was a pretty cool feature. It doesn't make any sense though for the opposite door to open when you click on it. They should both open and close simultaneously.
Somebody already said that the right door seems to respond to block updates. Hopefully when they get this working more fluidly they don't end up nerfing the BUD switch with it.
Exactly. Has anyone tested Pre-release 11w47a yet to see if that Double-Door bug-fix made it into this 1st snapshot pre-release?
Done, the feature was removed and double doors now works as it used to be. It was in the Version History/Development Version page of MineCraftWiki. Saying "Fixed the double door bug".

Since it's clearly possible for one half of a double door to affect the other, why can't they just make it so one click opens or closes both doors at once? :dry.gif:
I disapprove of this "feature". I hope there will be a mod for it so that I can open one door for a double door. I don't know how one door should effect the other. If I want to open both doors, I can do it myself, thank you. Other than that, I don't want to have to scramble figuring out which door is right to open first while a creeper is chasing me home.
I feel very uncomfortable if two doors open at once while I run in my home and there's PLENTY of room for the creeper chasing me to come in right after me.

This, I was wondering why my double iron doors weren't working right, I guess this "feature" is to blame.
