After being so excited about it, I've came to realize that the breeding system is nothing to be excited about. So here is my feedback that is broken down to why it's pretty lame...
1) No Control
- Every animal in close quarters will follow you if you have wheat in your hands, this makes it very difficult to lure in the animals you want in your pen. Also difficult to remove one single animal in an area filled with many animals.
- Parents follow it's baby, even after it's fully grown. Very often my wheat gets ignored because of it. It also makes it nearly impossible and rather annoying to separate parents from their babies. I'm unable to contain them in a barn because of this.
2) No Maintenance
- Like farming, there is no maintenance needed to make your baby animal grow. There is more maintenance needed for a wolf than a baby animal.
- (This does not mean that if animals required maintenance that they would die if you failed to raise them. It just means that they wont grow to an adult, same goes for the crops.)

Think Wurm Online had a better way of handling animals, which was a rope. It limited the amount of animals that you can bring into a pen and it made sure what animal you were pulling into your pen. They also had a time period for pregnancy.
Introducing animal maintenance would be a frustrating chore. Imagine if you go away for several in-game days in order to build, explore, mine, fight or one of the other activities that make Minecraft interesting. You return to find that all your animals have died. Meanwhile, since wolves are always following you, it's no trouble to feed them.
In any case, unless you're keeping an indoor farm, most of the animals would simply graze.
However, some kind of benefit to feeding animals on a regular basis, such as faster growth or increased output would be welcome.

I have been plagued with this problem, and the best solution seems to be to get a bigger area, so that you can more selectively control which animals follow you. If you are trying to get specific animals to breed such as colored sheep, I would recommend keeping separate areas for different colored sheep so that they cannot intermix in the same area.

This is actually a really irritating thing that I think Jeb needs to fix. I can kind of understand the parents following a baby around for maybe one day/night cycle, but when you end up with 30 animals following around the same one baby, things just get a bit too hard to handle.

Even a simple "click on the animal to have them follow you" would be better than how it is right now. I'm not sure I would like to see Jeb and any more complexities to the breeding, otherwise people will just complain and not use it.
It would be nice if the animals could really graze, so that the grass would dissappear. So if you got a lot of animals in a tiny space you need to move them from time to time.

Start off with a clean pen for every animlas, for eg 4 for chickens sheep pigs and cows. Slowly lead 2 of each type into each pen. Then commence breeding, just take care when opening and closing gates so that animals dont escape. If they do, kill them.

I agree that some maintenance is needed in survival games. I have a feeling though that making animals require more maintenance for breeding/growth would upset a fair amount of the community. Not that this should be a reason for discounting a game mechanic. I personally think that baby animals should need to be fed wheat in order to grow after a certain period of time. Think of the automatic food dispensers people could make that actually have a use.
Anyways, while animals following you around in a flock is annoying in many aspects it does have an upside. It can be pretty cool when you have a flock of chickens in creative (30 or so) and fly above the pen with some wheat in hand.
maintenance seems to be a needles addition, considering that the main aspect of the game is not farming. farming is simply a way to support you in the game.
crafting rope would be a nice addition. might spawn a whole range of new items. vanilla grapple hook anyone?
Thing is, breeding can't be made too complicated, as you, as player have alot of tasks to do, if breeding takes up too much time in this, it'll suffer for it.
That said, some simple tweaks could make it interesting.
As someone mentioned above, letting animals graze would be a good way to let it have some maintenance. It also would allow more purpose to assign farms more space then the drillholes some people use to breed their animals compactly.

I quite like the system actually. It's so easy to maintain animals within a big enough area, and just find enough of them. If you have enough it will be like a slowly dying family tree.

The main problem i have with this new system is actualy that every so often animals are able to jump over fences, even if you stack them 2 blocks high! All my cows just dissapeared one day due to this.

The problem wth beeing able to properly seperate Animals is not that difficult to solute: Just make Chicken following seeds, cows folowin flowers (just as an example) and so on....
And yeah there shoulb be more to invest than 2 wheat to get meat. peaople are complaining about big mushrooms bein unbalanced but it is the same here. Making the growth of baby animals stop when there is no food (like gras or a hod with wheat) is an nice and easy way. It does not add too much complexity. and on top of that it would make our farms look much nicer :smile.gif:
We finally got animal farming! Hooray! Let's all whine about how we would have done it since design games is easy and we all have our own massively popular games!

Minecraft shouldn't become a game that requires any or much maintenance.
Right now, you do things when you want. If your wolves take damage, it's partially your own fault. You don't need to feed them at a certain time or they'll die. Your crops don't die if you don't harvest them in time, and you don't even run down your hunger bar if you stay in one place. There is literally nothing that requires maintenance if you do nothing, except possibly endermen disassembling your dirt shack

That and think of how much meat a fat animal can give compared to a starving one? That's another system that was present in Wurm Online.
Rather wait for a mod, since they'll be officially supported eventually.
