I think people around here need to truly realize how insanely far minecraft has come graphically-wise as well as gameplay wise. Heres a little comparison I cooked up to express this. Long has minecraft been ridiculed for having horribly ugly graphics. It now can truly be looked upon as a beautifully stylized game. What do you think will/should be implemented graphically wise after release? Post your ideas below!
Honestly, I'm one of the few who liked the very oldschool charm that Minecraft had in Alpha. I've found myself just utterly incapable of liking smooth lighting (which is ok because Notch gave us the "off" button for that one. I thank him for that), and the way lighting is done in 1.8 just gives me a headache and eventually I just went ahead and made a mod that makes 1.8 light resemble 1.7.3 lighting. It still has every advantage of the new model (no chunk updates on relight at night), while looking a lot nicer in my eyes (I even gave it a tinting feature, which produces nicer colored light compared to 1.8)
Minecraft has come a long way, and definitely for the better. The dramatic improvement in the quality is especially true once you throw in a super high-resolution texture pack.
Yeah the graphics look way better now, the shading astounds me. People make fun of the graphics but really the shading is way more up to date than call of duty.
I totally agree with InsanityBringer. Notch really needs to add version graphic screen into minecraft with block texture picker, where you can chose say, which cobble 1.7 or 1.6 and so on and stuff like light colour y/n and biome colour y/n

I remember when Notch said he didn't like this shading style, and we could only get it with mods...
