I haven't tried the bed mechanics yet, but here's my two cents:
I like the idea of not getting in bed and being woken up by monsters. That trial-and-error game was never fun. I also like the idea of having a bed become permanently safe (unless that's been thrown out the window. I heard that once a bed is safe one time, it's permanently safe forever. Please correct me if that's wrong.)
However, being able to sleep out in the open does sound completely stupid. I'm fine with a new system if the other one was beyond repair, but this one seems overpowered for those who don't have houses (since they can suddenly sleep through the night) and underpowered for those who have built homes (since their homes provide just as much protection as an open field).
It got me thinking, though. This does encourage even the most basic survivalist to build more of a hamlet or homestead, rather than a small hole or box. If you build a huge castle or fence off a yard, it would solve the zombie-at-the-door issue. It's more incentive to build a second story to your house, too.
I think a fair tweak would be to shorten the radius in which beds detect monsters. It would allow for more humble shelters; it's unfair to expect everyone to build something huge every time. I look forward to building more, bigger houses, but I know a lot of others don't.
REALLY MAD AT THIS BECAUSE I DO THIS EVERY NIGHT:
1. Try to sleep in my house, says monsters are near
2. Goes on roof, shoots all monsters in the direct vicinity
3. try to sleep AGAIN, STILL SAYS MONSTERS ARE NEAR WHEN THERE CLEARLY ISN'T!!!!!!!

Well, this is an incentive to make a basement to your house also because usually it's the monster under your house that causes all the sleeping problems even if it can't possibly get to you.
Building a secure shelter is now irrelevant with regards to sleeping. If I make a little shelter somewhere where mobs spawn instead of using my bed I have to wait until daylight or go hunting. It isn't "more realistic" as the mob will never get in if I just sit around until the sun rises. It is just a pointless annoyance.
If I carry a bed with me on a journey overland I'm entirely safe. As soon as it starts to get dark, but before mobs spawn, I toss a bed on the ground and sleep safely through the night. It works EVERY time and it makes the fact that I can't sleep in an enclosed room seem even sillier. I used this trick when I traveled away from my base over a mountain and into a desert biome to get some sand. Before the change I would spend time making little secure places to hide, but since that doesn't even necessarily work, I would just plop down a bed whenever evening came and voila it was daytime again. There was no danger in the journey or in the time spent away from home without a shelter filling up my inventory with sand.
The game should use pathing to determine whether we can sleep in a bed, not proximity to existing mobs. If a mob can path to us from an unlit area, we should get attacked at night or not be able to sleep in a bed.
I HATE it when that happens to me. I was in my obsidian base, going to sleep on creative, and I had to surround my bed with planks to get the thing to shut up.
The new system is pretty dumb. Except for the 'no beds against walls' thing it was fine the way it was.
The idea solution would probably be to incorporate Somnia into the main game except without all the bells and whistles like being able to sleep any time and set for how long etc. That way if a monster would reach you if you hadn't gone to sleep then it still will meaning you can't just sleep unprotected and unmolested but if you do have enough protection then you're fine. However it does open up the possibility of being awoken by a creeper explosion which doesn't sound fun.
I haven't used Somnia, but my understanding is it runs the game while you sleep. That would be an elegant and perfect solution...
...and I think getting awoken by a creeper explosion once or twice would be a good incentive to build walls and/or shut your door.
Well, people say that the abbility to sleep ruins the challenge of the night, now atleast we will have to go out and kill some zombies if we want to use our bed.
But it is really easy to avoid it, make like 32 torches, put them around your house, problem solved, if not enough make a lot of halfblocks and put them around your house, mobs CANT spawn in them, i did that a recent i´ve been playing, works perfectly.
Just don't put your bed next to an exterior wall. I have not seen this message yet because I build my bedroom someplace where I don't here the undead moaning to eat my brains.

Well it's better than it used to be. Now, at least, you don't get jumped in your sleep 98% of the time.
Still, though, if you're in your house and there's no way for mobs to enter, you should be able to sleep EVERY night without question. Not sure what's up with that.

I am using the newest version of Weekly Minecraft (12w01a) and made a mushroom house with (red) mushrooms. (:RedShroom:) And I made a bed. Once I sleep, "You may not rest now, there are monsters nearby." occurs.
Is anyone else finding this as annoying as I am? I try to sleep to get rid of the monsters, yet it tells me I have to get rid of the monsters to sleep. :dry.gif:
Its like the story of the chicken and the egg... whos first? Anyways, stopping the mumbling i think there are some positive aspects and some negative aspects on this. I used to like the old sleeping system, the only thing that used to annoy me much was getting awake by mobs on fully lit rooms. If they fix that.... i wish they did.
Well, now I can make my house in an open field w/o walls or roofs, it looks like a camping ground or a chill spot. I mean yeah, this version of the sleeping function doesn't make much sense, but I'm enjoying it.
The only reason I don't like it is when I'm tired of digging underground on my somewhat decently lit private island thing and a zombie or skeleton from the other side of the island walks over to my house.
The reason I go up to my loft bedroom in this SECURE HOUSE after digging for ages is because I don't want to dig anymore. I don't want to go outside and eradicate monsters, I want to go to bed and let the sun have them in the morning. I'll dodge creepers, no big deal.
But now, I either have to go craft stuff I could craft later or GO DIG MORE. Dx
Though the mountain house having that message freaked me out because I didn't know there was a cave on the other side of my bedroom wall...
Long story short, it either helps or annoys. It is very dependent on the situation.

I guess now mobs are more like loud neighbors then someone who just walks in on you while you sleep. This sort of begs for you to take control of your bedroom 3 dimensionally. I guess they assume you always have a closed room and a door then they assume that you should make a basement or front yard fence to keep away any possible annoyances/intruders. The last time I had a mountain base there was a zombie shouting through the wall too. x.x

Creepers. That is all.

As for opening doors i have made a topic a while ago (sig)
