Thread is about the story after the fight, not the fight itself.
But since you touched on that matter, the fight was really lame too. Being a bit more harder would help, but NO to blasting fire.
I'm sure the fight isn't really finished. The dragon doesn't do anything to hurt you, and the tower breaking is annoying, so I'm sure that's going to be changed and fixed soon.
For the sake of Minecraft, I hope the same is for the ending as well.
But it isn't an ending. The last lines? The voices telling you what to do next. To wake from the dream. And make a better one. Call it what you will, but I think it's inspiring.
Yeah, rockstar and bethesda would like a word with you...
/thread derp. asshat.
I can't form an opinion because I couldn't be bothered to sit through that slow scrolling wall. I hit esc, found I'd lost all my levels and went back to playing skyrim.
Replying to this so people will hopefully see it and calm down. The ending was meant to be over the top. It fits into Minecraft's quirky nature quite well. If you don't feel like sitting for 10 minutes, press ESC and go right back to playing, or edit the .txt file to your liking. Thinking you own the game is quite childish, and trying to ruin it for those who enjoy it isn't a good idea either.
I rather like the idea of being able to complete some kind of grand achievement to 'finish' Minecraft. What I don't like is the story that goes with it. In my opinion, Notch should cut the story and just have the credits roll. The whole point of Minecraft, in my opinion, is that it lets you make up your own mind about everything, come to your ow conclusions about questions like "Who built the Strongholds?", "Why am I here?" etc. and the ending counteracts that, imposing a plot onto us. I think it would be far better to leave us with the credits without explaining anything, and continue to let us make what we will of the world we find ourselves in.
This EXACTLY.
The potential of Minecraft rests in that it's YOUR WORLD. Not YOUR COMA DREAM.
Meh, I don't like it. Minecraft is one of those games that shouldn't have an ending. Even though it doesn't actually end your game, it's just going to make the game even more boring after you win. Alpha days were the best days.
PS: I haven't played any of the 1.9 prereleases yet because I want to experience the full thing and not get bored. However, updates like this and the experience bar really disappoint me. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking?
If Minecraft is going to have an ending, it should be one that details no overall plot and merely discusses simple things. Not a "HURR DURR COMADREAM".
Due to the large number of ending opinion threads, I've chosen to sticky this one as it does not have a biased opening post, has a poll and is already one of the more popular of these threads. Other ending opinion threads will be redirected to here.

The current ending is surely NOT that. It's a philosophical coma dream, not a quirky thing as it should be. In my opinion if it was shorter and less of a moral lesson it would have been better.
I would just like to point out that the ending of Minecraft does not say Minecraft is all a dream.
The ending of Minecraft is a beautiful allegory, your character has ascended to a higher plane of existence by being able to defeat the enderdragon, and in the return, finds himself in an alternate reality in which he is able to read the thoughts of the cosmos.
Minecraft is not a dream, life itself is a dream. The end speaks of the universe as one giant dream, that mankind divulges themselves into with various exploits. Minecraft is but one of these illusions, a way to escape from reality, if reality is even real.
It is a beautiful way to state that the character, and the player, are simply living within one plane of existence, and it is now time for us all to ascend to a higher plane to become one with the cosmos.
1. It is creepy ********:
- Weird crap about love.
- Dreaming?
2. Totally removes the players ability to view MC any way they want. Just because you edit the win.txt dose NOT make make it any different. The official ending is still there, ruining speculation about MCs "history" and where all that crazy **** came from.
3. Implies that the game, life its self, and everything are all just dreams. This is BS, sounds like Notch wants to start a new cult (or as someone mentioned, it sounds like the matrix).
4. Has nothing to do with the way MC works.
5. Text is not the right way to end MC, to long, boring, lazy, etc.
6. Has nothing to do with the final fight.
7. IT IS ********! WTF NOTCH???
Solutions:
1. Change it to simply give you a achievement + role credits.
2. Remove it all together, just give a "you win" achievement once all other achievements are acquired. And possibly role credits (once) automatically when you do that. Killing the dragon is just one more achievement to get before finishing. Once credits role, you just keep playing.
3. (Don't like this one) Add an opening as well, to tie it together.
4. Anything but leave it how it is. . .
I can't understand how people interpreted this as a true 'ending'. They are all shouting like the world has ended, whilst they can just continue to play the game. Nothing has changed. You wake up from your dream, and start a new, even better one.
I'd be quite sad if Notch ever created a true ending. Meaning your world becomes locked and you are forced to start a new one.
-snip-
In the end we can rant all we want how Notch has screwed up everything, but we all forget one thing.
Without Notch there wouldn't be a Minecraft to 'ruin', this man should be deeply respected.
1- We're discussing the quality of the ending not having an ending. Like people have said ways to improve it (make it shorter, less philosophy, like that).
2- Notch isn't involved on this, just that Julian guy.
I'm pretty sure Notch was the one calling the final yes or no in adding this to the game as he is the original author.
I doubt he just woke up and this was suddenly put in the game.
About the quality. The text itself is ok, it isn't the deepest thing I've ever read but it has potentiall.
I see a lot of people posting comments such as 'boring'. I wonder how many of those actually read the whole text and took the time to think about it. Not just read the words, but seek the actual meaning behind the words.
Personally I don't think the text is that bad, it's more like the community, mainly the younger children, are to closed minded and just read the text and are like 'wtf is this ****?', not thinking about the actual meaning.
What should the text say? Well done you have defeated the mighty dragon, end of game?
I feel the message this text brings across is really good and fits Minecraft. The actual text itself could be improved a bit, mainly because a lot of the younger children who play this game do not seem to understand anything of it.
Except Minecraft is not a deep philosophical lesson, it's a game with silly things such as riding pigs. Leave poems like these to books or stuff like that.

It's the sheer trollish ridiculousness of the ending. I wouldn't mind an ending, if it wasn't a 10-year-oldish wall of pseudo-philosophical text.
It gets a result.

Should be a cheesy pic saying "ENDING GET!".
Yes, this is a sandbox RPG.
But an ENDING i find ridiculous. An ending! With CREDITS!
NOTCH! This is not SKYRIM!!!
No loafing.

That's the problem. It LOOKS way too DEEP, it's REALLY a BLATANT TROLL, and neither makes a good ending.

In all honesty, I found a certain charm to it, but it seemed.... poorly written.
I know that sounds harsh, but it was so long winded, and it repeated itself, and just BLECH
