Well this explains why I only have found 8 diamonds in my mine vs the multitudes I would normally. I usually mine on layer 12. So what is the new "sweet spot"? Also, when did this change take affect? I'm tempted to load an xray pack and verify this myself though.
Apparently diamonds now generate 4 blocks lower on level 12.
I am not sure I like this as one of the best reasons to mine on layer 12 was to be above the lava which usually spawned on layer 10 I think. Going 4 layers lower would complicate mining a ton. I guess this is on par with Notch's obsession with nudging people into exploring the giant caves. Forget that the game is call MINEcraft after all. Ughhh... getting really annoying.
Just started an alternating mine right at the first level of bedrock (and one floor above) and have hit about 18 diamonds so far... Keep your gravel handy, though. You will run into lava!
Loaded up CBJ's mods since it has an xray mod so I could check it out for myself. It does appear diamonds don't spawn at the same level. Which wouldn't be neccessarily a bad thing IF the lava levels had been lowered as well. Which does not appear to be the case. Instead I found a LOT of lava "waterfalls" way above its usual levels. Really really annoying. This essentially NERFs mining which is what made this game to begin with. Notch has abandoned his roots on this one I feel. WHICH will not serve him well in the end.
We need more members who think like this, rather than whining that their minecraft experience will be more challenging than normal.
There is adapting then there is having to deal with needless cr@p changed(without warning) just because its the flavor of the year/month/whatever. The game is called MINEcraft not Dungeon Delver RPG with Mining elements ffs. However, I predict Notch's problem will be solved on 11/11/11 when the masses migrate to Skyrim and leave this bugged riddled game... for another bugged riddled game probably but at least they have a legion of coders who actually QA and fix their bugs.

Not really a good enough explanation, nor the recommendation to just get over it.
Why were the ores lowered? Why all of them? What game purpose does it serve to make diamonds all spawn so close to the bottom of the map?
Lowering to ore by 4 is one thing, less than a 10% loss of possible blocks. However diamonds were at what, 12? Reduced to 8ish? And bedrock starts chewing up blocks at what level? 1-4ish? So that's closer to a 50% loss of possible blocks, in addition to making them compete with the deep lava zone throughout the lower map.
So what's the point of that?
There's alot about the game in development that is fluid and changing. Mobs being beefed up, weapons being nerfed, which seems to be in order to make room for an "Optional" roll the dice and please pay again lottery enchantment system, AND while we're at it, make all the useful ores deeper and harder to get to. Will it be so difficult to get enough diamonds for a sword & pick that it's supposed to push players to make do with random enchanted iron armour instead of getting mundane diamond armour? We've already seen how fiddling with passive mob spawning has made leather armour almost a non-event for the early game.
So...what is the balance they are actually looking for? Because so far, a lot of the changes seem to be made just for the sake of changing them, but without much foresight or concern for the overall effect on gameplay. And the result seems to be a lot of confused players with "WTF" expressions on their faces.

You seemed to answer your own questions. The changes are attempts to make the game harder. The harder it is to obtain diamond, the better. Don't tell me diamond needs to be more common because the game is already hard enough. With the fact they are now within strongholds, and mineshafts, and the fact that their old popular location was very conventional for strip mining all meant that diamond was way too easy to get. I built up a storage of around 20 diamond blocks on one server. It use to be hard just to get a diamond toolset, now I can swear I see everyone wearing diamond armour these days and that needs to change.

Why not? What bar is being used to determine how hard it is? Age bracket? Life expectancy? FPS and twitch speed?

But what happened to things change, adapt???
By what reckoning or standard has it been decided that things need to be harder?
If things need to be harder, WHAT needs to be made harder? Seems they're just turning up everything. The problem is that makes it really easy to go hard over and overshoot the objective.
Personally, I don't much care about MP servers, so it really doesn't concern a player like me whether or not you and 1500 other people have diamond armour, obsidian mods, and helms with pretty pink feathers on it that tickle ghasts into being tamed like wolves. My concern is how much time does any particular activity going to take to reach the goals I've set for myself. If that means nether exploration and I decide I want diamond armour for the trip, how many chunks worth of stone am I doing to need to drill through and how long will that take before I need to go back to real life stuff.
Where's the trade-off or medium area to satisfy hardcore professional serverbound twitch gamers with no life with casual single players who only get to make the most of their 20 minutes of games a day? And if it's geared only to one sect of the gamer spectrum, and the rest get tired of repetitive mining/grinding or bored for lack of challenge, then the rest will disappear and without the user base, what happens to the game and the company? One hit wonder?
At the moment, it's hard to tell if there is an objective, and without a target, how can you hit it? (especially when fiddling with dozens of variables at once!)

So says you. Not everyone WANTS to go raiding and exploring. Some of us prefer mining and building vs. hack and slash Call of d00d(y) style gameplay along with the survival aspects of it. And don't tell us its "optional" because you pretty much just said why its not optional. Its Notch gently guiding people to these locations. This is not really optional if you want to maximize your output. Sure you can ignore it but it completely destroys parts of the game that made this game enjoyable in the first place when the game was first introduced. Changing core aspects of the original gameplay that made the game popular in the first place is a really really dumb idea IMHO.

Well, on the subject, I do enjoy Call of Duty(mostly because of it's high level in competitivity). However, in minecraft, I am simply implying there should be more challenge. Minecraft should be a game where you can get by without taking advantage of every aspect of the game, but you shouldn't be able to be a master of it without taking advantage of every aspect. But you seem to want otherwise. You said it yourself that these features are not optional if you want to maximize your output, but that is the point. You shouldn't be able to be on top of this game and then some by only taking one approach.
All ores' generation levels seem to have been lowered about 4 blocks. This makes it harder to find diamond ore by exploring caves, 'cuz most of the diamond is now hidden by lava. Also makes it so the best spot to mine for them is below lava layer, making it dangerous to branch miine for them... Hopefully that all will be changed back, as I really do enjoy exploring around lava layer to find lots of diamonds without having to swim in lava. :I
For now, though, mining at level 8 should produce the most diamonds... But because that is under the lava layer, it may be best to mine right at lava layer so that when you do encounter lava, it will not flood your mine and you can simply build a bridge across. Maybe even fill the lava with gravel and dig it out to see if there was diamond ore exposed in the lake.
I didnt said im mad about it and didnt complain about it... i cant find a LOGICAL reason to move it to lvl 13 so you dont have to be rude (along with those +4)
Remember: cannibalism is always an option.

those guys are so annoying, Who watches that for entertainment. Its like listening to a couple 5 year olds.

Yeah, I don't get it.
