So as soon as I found out about Fortune and Unbreaking I knew I had to have that on a Diamond Pickaxe. So I set out to find out how to get that. I heard someone say he got it at exactly level 40. So I started to grind out XP. Went out at night, killed mass mobs, this was still slow, and I even died a few times. Determined to find the best way to get the fastest XP, I spent many hours finding a Skeleton/Zombie spawner. Finally I found the Skeleton spawner (perfect), then built the very efficient and effective grinder from this video (). It still took MANY hours killing the mobs and collecting the XP. I've invested like a day getting to level 40 so I could get this enchant.
My question is: How random is the Enchanting system? I'd like to have a little more info than what the wiki tells me before I spend my XP levels.
It is just random , it will give you 3 random enchantments with randomly choosen alien language words.
The only thing that has some effect on enchanting is using the library blocks, those will make the enchantment table choose better enchantments , but it is still random and you might get the shittiest enchantment.
I just don't understand how that type of system could be put into the game. I'm having anxiety that I might get Efficency which is utterly useless. Having a Diamond Pick mine 50% faster saves how much time? I've invested a TON of time and energy into getting these enchants, I don't see why we shouldn't be allowed to choose. Efficency would definitely be useful for people who maybe don't have any spare diamond (which doesn't make sense because it takes diamonds just to make the table).

There are various theories about why it is random , this are the most popular ones
- Notch is just lazy and half-asses every new feature for the game.
-It could probably be overpowered
-So people will have to keep gathering and spent various experience to get a good enchantment , not get it inmediately.
The first one , could be true , but... lets just say that notch is being serious with the game development.
the 2nd one , is just stupid , if we got that xp after hours it is not overpowered
I will go with the 3rd one , but is still kinda stupid and we should get what we want after gathering so many XP.
( those 3 reasons are stuff i read very often in threads related to enchantments ).
It doesn't make me want to keep farming XP just to get this enchant, if I don't get what I want. It's honestly going to make me give up on playing for a while. Farming that XP was not fun, it was basically stand around, collect XP every hour, go afk again. I cannot imagine getting to level 40 or 50 naturally. Especially if you're playing on Normal or Hard difficulty. Having TONS of XP handed to me still took like at least 20 IRL hours to get.
That's my complaint. There's no way I'm doing that again. These good enchants should be a reward for the time and energy I spent trying to get them, not a gamble. I really hope I just get Fortune and Unbreaking.
Higher levels do bump the odds towards your favour, but... they're never in your favour. Level 50 maybe gives a 5% chance to get fortune with unbreaking. Maybe. I'm being optimistic. Level 40 has a similar chance, as does level 30. Do not bother grinding above 40, it's a colossal waste of time.
Yup, the system is just plain silly, and this is putting aside how you have to spend every level each time to avoid bulk xp wastage.
I doesn't help that while grinding for xp you can't really do anything else. Enchanting pushed me to idle MineCraft for the very first time (surfing webpages while mobs built up around a spawner). I couldn't risk going off to mine or anything until enough hours had passed for me to build up a suitable enchanting level, as death would mean the loss of a decent chunk of what I'd collected (xp essentially being a resource that you can't put into safe storage somewhere). That's assuming my reflexes wouldn't push me to hit the "respawn" button ASAP (doing so too early prevents you dropping any xp on death).
So, by the time I hit 36 I felt no moral qualms in save scumming until I got the exact enchant I wanted out of those levels.
I will go with the 3rd one , but is still kinda stupid and we should get what we want after gathering so many XP.
Your third definition there is that of grinding. I'm not sure whether it's more charitable to call Notch pro-grinding, or lazy. Regardless, I'm pretty sure he didn't think this through.

So this is what I got after spending like 3 hours finding a spawner, 20 hours afk idling waiting for the Skeletons to spawn. Spent like 20 minutes just sitting there reloading the enchanting table so I got exactly a level 40 enchant.
Absolutely the dumbest thing you've ever implimented Notch. Overhaul this system. Waste of my time, waste of my Diamonds. I'm so mad right now, I've been playing for days straight and I have absolutely no will left to continue playing. I'm sure I'll get the urge a few weeks from now. But this just drained me. What absolute horse ****.
Edit: I'm not going to stop playing but I'm absolutely just going to sit there and spawn an extra 1-2 diamonds every time I find one. How incredibly frustrating that was to get the most worthless enchant imaginable, and to not even get a little extra enchant just made me explode with rage.

"if I don't get what I want"... I suggest you think about how much this game is controlling your life if you get "anxiety" about choosing an enchantment. I spent 18 levels of XP on a diamond pickaxe and didn't get the BEST enchantment but WHO CARES. Its a video game, and the fact that you don't know what you are going to get is cool because its that much more rewarding when you do get something really cool.
Just don't worry about it. There are bigger things in life to worry about than enchanting tools in Minecraft. I'm sure you probably don't know that yet though because your probably a little 12 year old.
i found nether pigs work best for exp easy to find in nether easy to kill and usually 3-7 of them in the same area I can stay by my portal and gain 5 levels with in 20 minutes, outside mobs in the over world if i'm lucky 4 levels a night so thats 9 levels per minecraft day with time to mine/build during the day light hours in overworld since i notice time doesnt pass in the overworld when you go to the nether, this goes for furnice use as well

Seriously dude. I've never seen anyone rage about something so insignificant. Saying you will Spawn in a couple extra diamonds every time you find a few???
It's like you expect this game to always go your way and reward you for just sitting down and clicking the mouse. Minecraft does not work like that. Just play the game and have fun, that is what its meant for. Some times you find tons of diamond and get great enchantments... Then other times you get pwned by creepers and lose all your stuff falling into lava. THAT is what makes this game fun... Not whining about something that does not go 100% your way. I feel like telling you to go grow up, but I feel like even that wouldn't help youOh and by the way, you don't need level 40 to get unbreaking and fortune.
My level 14 enchant on a diamond pickaxe was Fortune I Unbreaking II.
Why would they put an Enchant in that is utterly useless? I tried my new pickaxe, the difference is not noticeable. Yes it would have been rewarding to get the Enchant that I wanted because that's what I worked so long and hard for. It's like if you went to work building a house and after a few weeks of hard labour, the contractor came up to you and said "okay, here are your beads" and he paid you in tiny little marbles.
I got anxiety over which enchant I got, I didn't get to choose. You obviously didn't think your potshot through and just resorted to saying I'm a 12 year old because I'm mad my time got wasted. The reason I'm mad is because I didn't even get to enjoy the video game while I did this ****. I would have much rather built something or explored, but no, I had to sit within 20 blocks of the spawner, and kill the mobs every hour or the game would crash.
You're the one who sounds like a 12 year old, saying "it's just a game!!". Yes it is just a game. But it's a time-investment, just like anything else. Your entire argument is counter-productive to itself.
EDIT: I've been playing this game since early Alpha, I bought it then. I've never even posted on the forums before now, never complained about ANY of the gameplay aspects before this. Everyone knows that this enchanting system is just bad. Or the Leveling up aspect is just bad. You don't know me, don't come in here and say I'm a whiner. I'm perfectly justified in being upset over this.

Just FYI. You didn't HAVE to do anything. You complaining about spending hours harvesting XP and then complaining about how you didn't get exactly what you wanted is why I called you a 12 year old. No one forced you to decide to spend 40 levels of XP and then whine and cry about it when you got something that wasn't exactly what you wanted. Have you ever played poker? Sometimes you have a great hand and then you lose! NOTCH intended enchanting to be this way.
You see... Every enchantment you put on your tool or armor is a BONUS. Considering without the enchantment its just a normal tool. Sure there are some enchantments that are better than others, but WHINING AND CRYING and RAGING because you didn't get the best possible one is so immature and self-centered.
So what you are saying is; no one really has any right to complain about anything in Minecraft simply because you don't have to do it.
You obviously have NO idea how analogy's work. You don't sit there for 5 days playing a single hand of poker.
I am not being immature or self-centred. Even others in this thread have agreed that this system is utterly flawed. Do you even read these forums? The Enchanting system (and consequently the Leveling system) are not well done, and everyone who has any experience with it knows it.
EDIT: Allow us to choose our Enchants. Every 10 levels or so should be another Level on the Enchant (Choose Fortune at level 34 = Fortune III, 4 levels left over). If you would like to add Unbreaking I, you'd need to get to level 10 to afford it (You should be able to add Enchants to existing Enchanted Items, in my opinion). This would still require the long grind, but eliminate the frustration of a useless enchant. I personally would carry a Iron pickaxe with Efficiency (to clear Stone and junk) as well as a Diamond Pick with Fortune for rarity's.

I really don't understand this string of words. Of course I didn't have to sit here doing anything. This argument keeps popping up. It's nonsensical. You didn't have to level up your pokemon. You didn't have to beat the Elite 4. It's just a video game!
The truth is, if you want the best enchant; you have to spend the time to get it. I could have simply gotten to level 10 or 15 and gave it a whirl, maybe got the enchants I wanted, but only level I or II. I want the highest level of the best enchants. And I (was) willing to put forth the effort to obtain it. Spending those days grinding seemed all worth it until my enchant actually popped onto the pick. 5 days is a long time. Now I'm being told that, I may never get the enchants I want, even if I spend oh, a year doing this. 5 years. It's completely random. And that is just bad design in my opinion.
@breebre: Don't feed the troll. When people are throwing childish insults at you, reason won't get you very far.
If you wish to get enchantments as the game stands, then I highly recommend you cheat. At the end of the day, when talking about single-player mode at least, how you play the game is irrelevant so long as you have fun! Eventually a better system will be on offer, whether it be through Mojang or the modders.
@william: I highly doubt many players who made it past level 30 took any "risks" to do so, other then that of their time.

Things like what your item is made out of affects it (gold is apparently slightly more likely to land higher enchantments), and of course level affects it, but yes, it is really terrible that there is very little you can control it. Currently, if you know the algorithm, you can maximize your chances with a lot of math and statistics, which is fine for someone like me, but really a terrible thing for most casual players. It'd truely be nice if they made it better, where the layman can have a easy chance to get what they want but it still rewards those that can master and experiment with it.
But so, assuming the following about your situation:
1) You'd at least want Fortune (harder for me to calculate for having Unbreaking also)
2) You want to spend the least time you can xp grinding (it is hard to bend the odds so that it both cuts down on your time grinding and your item resources used)
Then here is the numbers I suggest:
Fortune I:
* If you enchant about 6.7 diamond picks with a level 16 enchantment each, likely one will have Fortune I
Fortune II:
*6.6 picks with a level 28 enchantment each
*6.1 picks with a level 30 enchantment each
Fortune III:
*4.2 picks with a level 44 enchantment each
*4.1 picks with a level 45 enchantment each
*4.5 picks with a level 43 enchantment each
Note: more likely with higher level enchantments to get a bonus enchantment like unbreaking.
I am so sorry for you, and I really hope these numbers can help.
Yes the enchanting table is bad design, but Notch won't fix it unless you let Mojang know. Tweet Jeb and Notch every day and tell them that enchanting sucks and they need to do something about it. Even tell them your story which is one of many that prove how crap enchanting is right now.
You have my sympathy for spending 5 days grinding. I spent a couple hours grinding and felt horribly cheated and angry. Honestly, there is no point going over level 10 right now if you want to enchant.
I desperately need fortune enchants on my iron picks on SMP. The server I play on, I build massive, extravagant fortresses with a higher resource count.
One of these monoliths in development is called the Aquatic Abyss, which is made of 90% obsidian. Obviously, doing this requires some serious amounts of diamonds, hence the need for fortune on my iron picks during cave runs. Additionally, all diamond picks need at least Efficiency V to reduce obsidian collection times from my obsidian mine. I did some calculations, and it seems as if I would be able to get two 64 stacks of obsidian with one hour.
Of course, if I don't keep a steady supply of diamonds, the project's build will be stalled, and I will be hunting down diamonds for hours on end.
I know some will, "why the crap are you building something so huge out of obsidian?!", "you wouldn't have a problem if it was made of cobble!". Two major reasons it's gonna be obsidian:
1) Aesthetics. It's supposed to be dark and ominous.
2) Because enchanting was supposed to make it quicker. If enchants weren't picked at random, it would take less than half the time.
I earned those levels. I should use them the way I want to use them. Fix it now notch!
I absolutely LOVE enchanting. I made a nice mobtrap that farms ONLY skellies and zombies, left it on for EIGHT HOURS while I saw a movie and went to the store, and came back with level Sixty-seven. I enchanted a diamond sword at level 50 and got Fortune III, Unbreaking III, and Efficiency V! Talk about luck.
