I saw a video this morning showing how to make an infinite lava spring, which got the wheels turning in my head: how can I exploit this to make infinite obsidian?
This machine is an order of magnitude more complex than the standard cobblestone generator, and you'd probably use it just as often, but I hope that you think, as I do, that it is the new must have accessory for the modern minecraft home.
As far as I can tell nothing as self contained as this device has been made so far. It requires no fuel in the form of redstone, and you don't have to haul lava and water in buckets. Because you're not converting redstone into still lava, I don't see why it'll stop working after a patch.
It is not very efficient, unfortunately, and anyone who can make a more efficient version would be a legend to me.

Because of obsidians mine speed, casting obsidian is usually preferable. Only when making enchantment tables, or Nether side portals is mined obsidian necessary. Because of this, I don't see a complex obsidian generator ever catching on unless it can be made more automated.
None the less, this is a great invention. Good to know its possible, and this may lay the ground work for future models that may prove more efficient.

I agree, it is a pointlessly complex and inefficient way to do something with a vastly easier method that's been around since alpha. For example, outside of Skyblocks, who uses cobblestone generators? But I'm a SCIENTIST, DAMMIT :laugh.gif:
Maybe if an enchantment gets added to mine obsidian faster, you would use this. In the mean time, It's yet another pointless machine to fill another room of my vast, vast fortress. Vast.
I just started working on a machine to do this after a fail at making a whole building which i just accidently torching my pigs and cows i spent two hours herding as well as the snow golem guards.
I could see this as being very valuable if you were to need a source of obsidian in the Nether and had an ice block from a silk touch tool. It would certainly be safer than trying to mine obsidian from a Nether lava pool out in the open.

Completely untrue. on any PvP/ Faction/ Raiding server, like the one i play on, you need obsidian to keep your bases safe from tnt cannons. I use a redstone obsidian generator which gives me 7 blocks of obsidian in one press of a lever, but i still need redstone to fuel this. That can get annoying when you are first starting a base, and before you can safely put things into your chest, you need to mine redstone, or spend time looking for natural obsidian. I see this machine gaining popularity, and i am definatly going to check it out right now.
if the infinite lava spring thing is relying on the liquid physics change made in 1.9 pre5, then this will break the moment the next prerelease or update is out since Jeb is reverting said change. If it isn't relying on that and you found a way to make infinite lava springs, then that's awesome.

I haven't seen anything from Jeb about liquid physics since I learned this trick (which was this morning).
I hope that the lava spring remains. I just *seems* intentional. So you can make a water spring with 2 buckets and a 2 x 2 hole in the ground? now you can do the same with 4 lava buckets and a plus sign in the ground.
I know that you can make obsidian with redstone, and Notch has said that there will be a patch for that. That makes sense, because what has redstone to do with lava? But if water can have an infinite spring, then why not lava? Why should lava be a finite resource? You know what Earth is filled with?
Could we get step by step instructions, or a map download?
I can do that, but I am Australian and now it is a time for a bed for me. If no one has worked it out by the time I get up, I will post a bottom up reconstruction.
Or you could cross post this to the red stone forums. I bet they'll give you 5 variations how to make this in an hour.
Good night zzzz

My point is, why would you make obsidian, mine it, then place it. It's much easier to cast an obsidian wall with a dirt mold and simply make the obsidian where its needed. The only time in vanilla Minecract I can see needing obsidian blocks in your inventory is when making nether side nether portals and enchanting tables.
Given how much simpler casting obsidian is, a obsidian generator like this is a bit overly complicated. If I did need obsidian blocks I would either just make and mine them normally, or make an obsidian "farm" using the new infinite lava trick to fill it.
Regardless, I applaud invention. Even tho this device seems impractical in its current state, its a start. A door way to something else.
If you're touching the middle of the block when it breaks, you automatically grab it before it has a chance to fall in lava. Works every time so I just dump water over all lava and work there, never lose any.
That said, I dunno if this would work with your obsidian block at ground level, but if you altered it so the obsidian was up a block higher and had water constantly pouring down, waiting for that block to be removed you could automatically grab it and get a new obsidian made. No buttons or switches would be needed, you could just hold the clicker and grab tons of obsidian.

I'm gonna work on making a better way, I want to find out as so!
Just think happy thoughts.

Yes but that is sorcery, in that it requires methods outside the universe (of minecraft) itself. And you will burn, sir, at the stake.
I have never actually done this except when testing if this bug actually worked.
I am sure there is a better way. Inverting the piston at the bottom would be favorite. I have more shots of the dem thing here.
edit: and here is the lock I added after I made that album (but before I made the video).
Just think happy thoughts.

Your minecraft steve must have been born with the finite liquid mod.

+1
I was the second person to use the avatar I have. The rest took it from me. The first I asked, he said yes.
I know what I'm doing. I plan ahead, or get tired and screw up everything.
